Eastwood have clinched the 2011 Shute Shield premiership by defeating Sydney University yesterday afternoon after 100 minutes of play, bringing Sydney University’s grand final winning streak to an end.

There was no smashing this year. It was a see-sawing encounter between two passionate sides.

The final minutes were like a cliché ending to a sport movie; the rain coming down, the game in overtime and all players digging deep to the end in the grand final game.

The spectators didn’t let the rain dampen their enthusiasm, and got into the occasion so much that Canada Bay council now have a ground in need of repair.

You had large support groups from both teams banging on anything they could find to urge their team on.

Burwood RSL’s signage fell victim to vocal Eastwood fans on the Parramatta Road side and one of the fences broke in half from fans trying to jump over to congratulate the players moments after full time.

The beginning of the match made it seem like it might go the way of a penalty goal extravaganza with shots at goal occuring often.

The first try finally came to Eastwood’s John Grant grounding a well placed kick. Eastwood led at half time 13-9 but the second half looked dreadful for them with University replying by way of a try after the break and gained back the lead 16-13.

With less than five minutes to go it looked like we were set for a seventh University premiership but poor timed ill-discipline cost them, allowing Eastwood to boot one last penalty to even up the score 16-16 at the 80th minute.

In extra time there were nail-biting near tries and Uni had a chance to win the game with a penalty goal from near half way but declined the opportunity in a brave decision which ultimately did not pay off.

A penalty goal decided it for Eastwood, hanging on for the final minutes to end the bruising final 19-16.

A huge congratulations goes out to Phil Waugh who played his last rugby game and to Sydney Uni who had another brilliant season and another appearance in the big one but the final congratulations of course goes to Eastwood on an absolutely dominate season and stunning grand final victory.

The 2011 final would have to be one of the most exciting finals in the history of Shute Shield.
