Ranking the 30 greatest players in Australian Rules history is no easy task. Was Matthews better than Cable? Robran better than Ebert? So one and so on.

Here are the 25 of the greatest players to ever play the great Australian game ranked from one to 25:

1. Leigh Matthews
2. Wayne Carey
3. Gary Ablett Snr
4. Ted Whitten Snr
5. Barrie Robran
6. Peter Hudson
7. Russell Ebert
8. Barry Cable
9. Gordon Coventry
10. Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer
11. John Nicholls
12. Ron D. Barassi
13. James Hird
14. Chris Judd
15. Michael Tuck
16. Garry McIntosh
17. Michael Aish
18. Darrell Baldock
19. Stephen Michael
20. Bob Skilton
21. Haydn Bunton snr
22. Dick Reynolds
23. Malcolm Blight
24. Lindsay Head
25. Neil Kerley
26. Ian Stewart
27. Len Thompson
28. Gary Ablett jnr
29. Terry Daniher
30. Wayne Johnston

There’s no doubt that Leigh Matthews deserve to be number one. But Matthews would’ve faced a stern challenge from Wayne Carey and Gary Ablett for the top spot.

Most South Australian footy supporters, however, would’ve had North Adelaide legend Barrie Robran as their first choice.

What do you think of the list?

If Buckley, Lockett and Daicos are not in the Top 30 then you are making the wrong list

My father saw every great player from the mid 1940’s to 2015. He was a mad Bulldogs supporter who played junior football against Ted Whitten. Dad played for better th the Collingwood and Bulldogs U 19’s in the early 1950’s. He really rated Whitten but as far as he was concerned John Coleman was the greatest and most talented player he ever saw in 70 years of going to games every week and watching on TV.

If you think Buckley isn’t a top 10 player of all time you obviously haven’t been watching the afl for a long time, I think that he’s a top 5 maybe 3 player of all time and that’s coming from a Carlton fan who has been watching since around 83

"WHAT KIND OF LIST IS THIS?!" I acknowledge that your list is good BUT you are missing way too many players. You should also acknowledge the skill of olden day players and accept that although the game has changed the players need similar skill sets as they did back then. Yes ,I know you can't really rate some non Modern Day players like Charile "Commotion" Pearson and that this is your opinion but you don't even have John Coleman (Yes ,I am an Essendon supporter but he was just unstoppable) and roles like the ruck-rover and the Ruck have been significantly changed but I still think that your list needs to look something like this.... (Minor League such as NEAFL,VFL (modern day) etc. do not have players on this list) 30 Ivor Warne-Smith 29 Tony Lockett 28 Jack Dyer 27 Darrell Baldock 26 Michael Tuck 25 Bruce Doull 24 Francis Brouke 23 Peter Hudson 22 Jason Dunstall 21 John Nicholls 20 Greg Williams 19 Keith Greig 18 "Polly" Farmer 17 Ted Whitten 16 Jack Regan 15 Bill Hutchison 14 Malcolm Blight 13 Ron Barassi 12 Ron Todd 11 Stephen Slivagni 10 Gary Ablett Sr. 9 Ian Stewart 8 Gordon Coventry 7 Wayne Carey 6 Haydn Bunton Sr. 5 Bob Skiliton 4John Coleman 3Bob Pratt 2 Leigh Matthews 1 Dick Reynolds Top 10 are solid and anyone inside the top 6 could be no. one. 14+ are subject to change

I would have thought that Teddy and pretty my much anyone that saw Farmer play would have him at 1. I didn't see him play, though I did see him coach. That was good!! Broke some ice let's say. . Both "Geelong flyer" Bob Davis and that geelong prick Sam Newman rate him as high as anyone and also both also are on record as saying Farmer is the ONLY player ever to change the way ethe game was played by virtue of his genius. My father and countless others in WA and Vic would echo this which I heard first hand I on a repetitive basis growing up. He gets my number 1. Carey, even with his greatness, didn't get this ubiquitous support. I remember seeing him in a Hungry Jacks in Claremont. I was a kid Having my father tell me - that is they best footballer to ever play the game. I overheard many others saying the same sort of things. This was while we watched a Claremont team that featured J and P Krakour, K Hunter, G Moss, W Blackwell, A Daniells, D Panizza, , W Ralph. Those were great days...

This lists loses credibility without Tony Lockett in there. An absolute freak, greatest full forward to play the game. Kicked 7 goals or more 22 times and won more games off his own boot than any other player. Carried StKilda for years, imagine if he played in a dominant side like Matthews, Carey and Ablett to name a few.

Jack Dyer don't get a mention either. Don't think Carey should be in the top 30.

Don't worry about Diesel - he may not make the list on ability but I am sure his lawyers will be writing to the author trying to get him re-instated...

Nash and Pratt would have to have gone close-Nash once kicked 18 against SA in a state game idespite only playing forward for 3 quarters. He was apparently challenging the SA defenders to nominate which foot he should use when shooting for goal from set shots. Pratt's 150 goals in a season along with a couple of other tons rank highly. Doesn't deserve to make the list because he didn't play at his best for long enough, but Phil Carman was head and shoulders the greatest I have seen when he was "on". Saw him make his SANFL debut as a kid of 17 where he dominated the might Port Adelaide team playing at centre half back. His first season at Collingwood in 1975, when he missed the Brownlow by 3 votes despite missing 6 games with a broken bone in his foot, showed just how good he was. He was Wayne Carey 20 years before Wayne Carey. If big game performance counts, then Jimmy Bartel should be number 1.

Some strange inclusions I must say, Michael Tuck 15 wow! Agree with most that N.Buckley should be in the top 30. Prob should pick top 10 from each decade say from 1960 onwards

Nathan Buckley definetally deserves a place, he dominated most games and I cant remember anyone who regularly kicked goals from 50m+ like he did. People just let their hate of Collingwood cloud their opinions. I hate the Eagles but I know Ben Cousins was better than Chris Judd (who somehow made the list) and there's no way Adam Goodes shouldve been neglected. G.Coventry, Lockett and Dunstall would be in a theoretical forward line in the best lineup ever, but not this list.

Saying his Collingwood's best ever player doesn't say much. DOWN WITH THE SCUM!

Maybe he may have made the top 30, but only just, there have been some incredible players over the years, players who were complete, Buckley's only problem was he never really kicked quite enough goals in my view.

why dont you just split the list into 2 groups, list (a) AFL list (b) VFL. The game has evolved so much in the past 20 years trying to create a list mixed with the 2 just makes it messy. Its hard enough picking a list from just the AFL let alone from other comps! I think by separating the 2 it should help make the list easier and cut back the possible options.

Where's John Coleman, the leading goal kicking medal is named after him, he should easily be top 10.
