Small steps to recovery, says Reds coach

Adelaide United coach Rini Coolen knows a home turf draw with the A-League’s only winless club isn’t a big result.

But Coolen takes a glass half-full approach to Friday night’s 1-1 draw with Melbourne Heart.

“At least we have something to move on with,” Coolen said.

“There were a lot of positive things in the game – the only negative thing was we didn’t win the game.

“So, happy with how we bounced back, but of course not happy with the result because we needed to win.”
Adelaide’s draw with the winless Heart came a week after the Reds’ record 7-1 defeat to pacesetters Brisbane Roar.

After such a drubbing, Coolen was content with small steps of progress against the last-placed Heart.

The Reds slipped behind and only equalised after the Heart were reduced to 10 men with Simon Colosimo’s sending off.

“We prefer to lift to a much higher level, we are not happy with that game but we have to be realistic,” Coolen said.

” … We made a few steps. The confidence was not fantastic, that is normal.

“We would prefer to play better football in the future, to create even more chances, and we’ll work on that.

“But we were in a situation that was not easy.

“It’s not a big result, but it is a result.”
Adelaide captain Jon McKain conceded the difficulty of responding to the Roar humiliation – particularly as he took most of the blame for his defensive deficiencies in the record loss.

“It was a very tough week,” McKain said.

“Personally it was very dfficult for me to bounce back after copping a lot of criticism during the week and putting my hand up and taking a lot of the blame for what happened.

“We have to build our confidence back.”
McKain said the Reds were disappointed with the one point gained from the draw with the Heart.

“If we keep gritting our teeth, the confidence will come and I’m sure the results will come,” he said.
