Victory likely to appeal Foschini ban

Melbourne Victory are strongly considering appealing the controversial red card handed to defender Matthew Foschini, as they face a player drain for Saturday night’s clash with Central Coast.

Foschini was the second Victory player ejected, both before halftime, during Saturday night’s 2-2 draw with Brisbane Roar.

Victory coaching staff and players were fuming at the decision and their anger had not subsided by Sunday, with assistant coach Kevin Muscat saying their stance was widely supported.

“The Matt Foschini decision baffled everyone and I’ve not seen one message or spoken to anyone who said it was a deserved red card,” Muscat told Fox Sports on Sunday.

The former Victory skipper indicated he will push for an appeal when club officials meet on Monday.

“I still feel it wasn’t the right decision, so we’ll give our opinion to the football club and see what decision we make come Monday morning,” Muscat said.

“But I’m optimistic that we will take some grounds. Whether that be an appeal we’ll have to wait and see.”

The Victory have until midday (AEDT) Monday to lodge an application to have the decision overturned.

Foschini was penalised for a late tackle on Brisbane’s Thomas Broich, which Melbourne coach Mehmet Durakovic was adamant warranted a yellow card at most.

An independent panel would have to determine that referee Ben Williams made an “obvious error” to revoke the decision and save Foschini from a mandatory one-match ban.

Otherwise, the Victory will be forced to make at least four changes against the Mariners.

Attacking stars Harry Kewell and Costa Rican Carlos Hernandez will both be absent due to international commitments, while goalkeeper Ante Covic is facing suspension, as the other player shown a red card.

Yea, I guess you're right myself. It's not like the MRP didn't give Cristiano and Pantelidis another week for their 'frivolous' appeals against red cards....... wait a second....

Yes, they do have a reputation of being rough. But with the exception of Muscat, the reputation is not reflective of the truth. MV foul less, and receive more cards.

That would be great Matt. Exactly what we need.

There is a serious persecution complex amongst a number of MV people and fans (not all). Appealing a referee's decision like this is an insult to referees at all levels. It wasn't anywhere close to being a blatant obvious error by the referee, this is a direct undermining of an authority that needs to be respected by players, coaches and administrators. You get good calls and bad calls, it is a human game. I'd hate for our game to go down the cricket path where the umpire won't back his/her own judgement in tough decisions, or AFL where the man in white/red/green/pink pretty much refuses to pull out the book to report in fear of being embarassed by video footage. * Consistency of refereeing should certainly be addressed, but that isn't an arguable defence for a player breaking a rule of the game.

Well unfortunately the Victory have a reputation for rough, foul play. You can thank Muscat for a great deal of that. Thank god he isn't playing anymore. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

It's hard for Victory fans to be tolerant because more often than not they are on the receiving end. You can go through all the stats year by year and what you see is that the Victory generally has fewer fouls but always attracts more cards - which makes zero sense. Also a couple of the refs have been caught out with their prejudice. I can recall when Caceres went over to the Phoenix and one of those refs says to him during a game: "I don't want to see you doing that Victory thing." Needless to say, Caceres didn't have a clue what he was on about! It's a bit of a worry if a few refs are going into games imagining some sort of "Victory thing" that they need to watch out for, something mysertious that no one else knows anything about.

Wouldn't it be great if the refs used the red card for all studs-up tackles! No yellow, straight red! Just imagine that before you start complaining. This action would dramatically reduce this type of tackle, reduce the chance of injury and encourage greater play in general. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

Roger, there are a lot a Victory haters for a reason. One of them is how they go on about dicisions like this one. They aren't winning fans from other clubs. Other clubs fans seam to be more tolerant and objective even about discussions about the clubs they support. Brisbane roar supporters and in fact even the players have no problem admitting when they have a s**t game. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

Foschini didn't get an extra week suspension. The decision was upheld, which means that because it was a straight red, he gets a two week suspension. In relation to "what that tells us", it tells us that the governing body has intentionally set the appeal bar high so that it is difficult to overturn a decision, thus protecting the decisions of the referees, and avoiding a torrent of appeals (many which would be valid) every week. Agree we need to get past it, but it is made difficult with all the MV haters out there.

I agree the refs are inconsistent and yes more players should be at least booked in the a league. Players won't do that (much) in Europe as it risks yellow and possibly red. Refs should be more strict here. Players like broisch get a pounding in the a league. Foschini got and extra weeks suspension for appealing. What does that tell you??? It was stupid to appeal a decision like that because the rules support foschini getting a red in that situation (dangerous play, intent, heavy contact, studs up also)time to stop going on and accept the decision. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

I agree with Roger. Both in real time, and in slo mo, it looked a harsh call. Considering it was clearly a one legged slide tackle, the reaction from the ref was way over the top. If he launched himself in mid air, fair enough, but that didn't happen. It's the sort of call that only MV appears to ever have to cop, especially whenever Ben Williams is officiating.

Myself - can you seriously sit there and tell me that decision was not out of step with other referee calls made both previously, in the same game, and on the same weekend? Because I can tell you right now that a Brisbane player made a very similar tackle on a MV player later in the game, and that there were around 4 ocassions over the weekend where similar (or worse!) tackles were made with the fouls resulting in either a free kick or a yellow. No reds. How about you look past the fact that it's MV, and actually look at the consistency issue here.

It was a red card offence. It was studs up and if you look at the replay you can also see that heavy contact was also made to broich's foot. When melbourne victory loose the appeal will you all shut up and accept it? Of course not. You are the super club with the super supporters with the super team who think the rules need to be different for your team. Studs up, dangerous, play, heavy contact, all add up to red in the rules book. Look it up sooks. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

Yep. They'd be mad to appeal this. It was definitely a harsh call, but not an 'obvious error in the application of the laws' or whatever the standard is. If they appeal, it would just be posturing to back up Durakovic and Muscat's statements.

I like Broich as a player but that was play acting, he rolled 4 times over and look like he had his leg broken, his actions made the tackle look worse than it was and the ref fell hard for it.

“The Matt Foschini decision baffled everyone and I’ve not seen one message or spoken to anyone who said it was a deserved red card,” Muscat told Fox Sports on Sunday. No surprise when the guy surrounds himself with Yes-Men. A straight Red was a harsh call on the kid, certainly a yellow, but sometimes this happens in football. You accept it and move on.
