We we learnt from Melbourne Victory vs Perth Glory

By Katie Lambeski / Roar Guru

Perth Glory stunned the Melbourne Victory on Sunday night, staging a remarkable comeback to draw 2-2 after going 2-0 down with 10 men on the park.

Here is what I learnt about both sides:

Melbourne Victory

1. That wasn’t good enough

As a fan watching the game, it was impossible not to feel frustrated at what was a slow, disjointed and lazy game from the Victory. That frustration was evident in the terraces, especially after the final whistle.

The Victory have the largest fan base in the league, accounting for just under 30% of overall attendances this season. Frankly, the players (bar Ante Covic and Archie Thompson) aren’t giving the fans much right now.

2. Slow and confused

This could be said of the season to date, but again it was clear that there are problems (duh), mainly being the team is slow and aren’t suited to the short-passing style game that Mehm wants to instill. It is clear there is confusion as to what the team is trying to play, with the long ball being played forward often as well as attempts at passing around in midfield.

With the exception of Archie, the side is slow, especially in midfield. There is no cohesion or rhyme and reason to the way this side is playing.

3. Tommy Pondlejak and Billy Celeski shouldn’t be playing

Firstly, I respect Tommy Pondlejak and Billy Celeski for everything they have done at the club, but their time is done. Celeski couldn’t hold the ball, distribute the ball up the park and has no pace. He is offering just about nothing this season.

The problem I have with Tom Pondlejak’s selection is that he is keeping Rojas out, and is offering nothing in the process, being slow and not passing well either. I’m not pleased to be writing this, but I’m not blind to what is obvious.

4. Should Carlos Hernandez have played 90 minutes?

The playmaker arrived in Melbourne only the day before the match, after representing Costa Rica against Spain, playing 10 minutes off the bench against the champions.

He looked affected by jetlag, not having his usual effect and his passing game wasn’t at its best either. He was probably best served coming off the bench and playing 30-45 minutes.

5. Should Mehmet Durakovic be sacked?

The reaction from the fans said plenty after this game and it is becoming more apparent that Mehm is losing the support of many fans. There are some, and it is slowly becoming a majority, that are calling for his head. I’m wary of knee-jerk reactions, as I don’t want to see the club’s coaching staff thrown into chaos so early.

Let us ask, if Mehm is sacked, who is ready to replace him on short notice? I don’t think Kevin Muscat is ready to do it. So who? No-one right now. I don’t think the players should come away unscathed either, they are as responsible for this as much as Durakovic.

Some just didn’t look interested on the weekend. The fans are running out of patience and Mehm is running out of time.

Perth Glory

1. Brave, but are they the real deal?

A quite interesting thing to arise from this game is the lack of credit the Glory has received in the wake of Victory’s woes. I will give them credit, it was a great effort coming back when all looked lost going 2-0 down with 10 men for 50 minutes.

Whether they are the “real deal”, I’m not sure. We’ve seen this before haven’t we? A great start to the season ends up falling away. They need to capitalise on this and start winning consistently.

2. Unlucky calls against them

Two contentious calls went against the Glory, with the first being Liam Miller’s sending off. You could mount a case for both sides on this, but my view is Liam Miller denied Archie Thompson a clear goal scoring oppurtunity and that was what (I imagine) Chris Beath sent him off for. I would have sent him off as well.

The second decision, the Bas van den Brink penalty, was a shocker. He clearly got all ball and fairly tackled in the box, it shouldn’t have been a penalty. Also, according to the rules, van den Brink should have been sent off as well, but wasn’t. Two mistakes in one.

3. Watch for Andrezinho

The Brazilian wide midfielder came off the bench and bought his side back into the game with a set piece stunner just outside the penalty box in the 71st minute.

He has been a solid recruit for them early in the season, providing plenty of attacking flair down the flank, something that Perth were missing last season. Can he do it consistently? He hasn’t been so far.

4. Why was Mile Sterjovski taken off?

The veteran earned his first start of the season, with the Glory lining up in a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1. Sterjovski started on a flank and looked lively. In particular, his set-piece delivery at corners were solid and could have possibly have resulted in a goal. That was why I was surprised to see him taken off at half-time.

Surely, he should have been given at least an hour? Fergie?

5. More dangerous in attack

The recruiting of Perth Glory in the off-season has bought a few new faces, many of whom are new attacking talent. The new forward pair of Billy Mehmet and Shane Smeltz are going to have a key role to play. Smeltz scored the vital equaliser, smashing home a header off a perfect cross off sub Todd Howarth.

Mehmet and Miller look class touches and with Dodd (currently injured) and Andrezinho running down the wings, the Perth Glory has a bit going for it in the front third. All this, of course in the modern game, leaves Ian Ferguson and his team little room for failure

I actually thought that was Celeski's best performance for us for a long time. He struggled to make passes (as usual) but he won the ball a few times and seemed to cover quite a lot of ground. Drifted out the game a bit towards the end, but then for some reason the entire team seemed to play with a lack of urgency for the last fifteen minutes. A very strange performance, and a bad way to draw a game.

A few things: 1) The ball movement by the Victory in the second half was a lot more better. Not coincidentally, this was when Celeski moved to the defensive tip of the diamond. His possession started a lot of attacks in the first half of the second half before he ran out of legs - the complete opposite of what you've claimed. 2) A 4-3-3 needs genuine central midfielders to work. There's not enough of them to make it work at MVFC. 3) Perth clearly aren't the real deal while Ferguson is coaching - a watch of any of their last month of football makes this quite clear. 4) Sterjovski was a simple tactical substitution that had to be made during the break. An attacker is always unlucky in that situation and in this case it was Sterjovski. 5) Mehmet is average at best, something that has been evident since he did a couple of good things against Adelaide in Week 1. Hasn't offered much, and is caught as to how he wants to play - whether that be as an out and out target man or as someone that can use the ball himself.

First of all great stuff by glory on sunday you guys should be proud of your team's performance. In regards to MVFC I think they need to scrap this two defensive midfield thing they have going because it is clearly to slow, provides little to no creativitiy and is quite cowardly, go to a 4-4-2 with a diamond or 4-1-3-2 formation and the starting inclusion of both solorzano and rojas is a must, like don't get me wrong i think allsopp is a decent player and has been a great servant to the club but i honestly just think solorzano is a better striker.

yeh true but why play Pondlejak in the right flank of a diamond when Mehm could have played Rojas there? bad mistake

yeah rojas back in I don't think anyone would argue with. I suspect the diamond formation was a way of getting both carlos and H into the team whilst retaining some defensive solidity, but in doing so they sacrificed width and therefore rojas.

"Long-balls are such a painful thing to deal with, places a lot of pressure upon the AR"...It is...but it is a reality in the game and is done better in other leagues. The refs have been shocking in parts this season, and they need to improve.

jmac, you got it right. There is absolutely nothing in midfield. Broxham is an honest trier and plays his heart out for the side, but hes no quality player of the ball, Mehm should put a better passer with him in midfield. Covic, Leijer, Foschini, Vargas, Archie have been the best this season, always honest and respectful to the fans. Another issue is, the diamond is starting to go the same way as the 4-2-3-1 not really working and not playing the right players for it. I'd suggest a 4-3-3 now, drop Kemp for Foschini, a midfield of Brebner or Cernak (pending fitness) and Broxham with Carlos behind a front third of Kewell, Archie, Rojas. Stick with that team and go from there, for the short term see how it goes.

thats always an issue when players are short of match fitness...what do you do with them? I personally would have played Sterjovski for the game time and get that fitness, he didn't do to shabbily.

thanks mate, will do. Check my blog out at katielambeski1991.wordpress.com for more stuff as well. Glory deserve the credit for getting back into it, thats whats been lost in the headlines about Victory. I'm still not sold on Ferguson either, I haven't liked the way they play with him there, but thats slowly changing. Still, I'll wait a while before I can change my mind fully on him.

"Also, according to the rules, van den Brink should have been sent off as well, but wasn’t. Two mistakes in one." Both were heading away from goal at a speed that meant Chris Beath would have been unlikely to consider it a Obvious Goal Scoring Opportunity. So that part of the decision was fine. Long-balls are such a painful thing to deal with, places a lot of pressure upon the AR. I have to wonder if we are properly empowering our ARs as well? We are, I would think a few years off from something of a renaissance in Australian refereeing with many-many people coming up from below in the new era.

hi katie, I applaud you for finding the motivation to keep producing these articles on MV, so disappointing have they been at times this year. regarding their latest attempt at a system: CCM play a midfield diamond and do it quite well. their transition into attack is rapid and aimed forwards immediately. they have fast, agressive, attacking wide full backs who always provide a threat. they have a DM who reads the play and distributes as well as he defends. they have technical 'wide' (tucked in) midfielders who can play on the deck - play narrow or peel out wide and get down the wings to cross. without these aspects the system doesn't work. these are the main areas for mine where MV lacks the players in the squad to play this system. the centre halves, GK and forwards (without much service) are probably going ok. back to the drawing board tho' I would think.

i think mile isnt quite at match fitness yet, this is why he was taken off, not a lack of effort. It could have also have been because fergi wanted to introduce Andrezinho and Mile was the only one who he could take off, so unfortunately was sacraficed, and I suppose it payed off.

It was truely proud watching the boys take over and control the game as if they were the ones against 10 men. After all the knock backs of the game the Glory pulled it together and won, truely a fantastic performance we didn't just resort to defending but we constantly attacked striving for the win, which we should have got. I still have a problem with Ferguson and the way he lines the team up but hopefully he can prove me wrong and this game is a turning point for the Glory. Well done boys. Great article as well - keep them coming!!!
