Graham Henry's rugby future confirmed

By News / Wire

Sir Graham Henry’s post-Rugby World Cup career will centre on developing New Zealand’s high performance coaches at Super Rugby and national provincial championship level.

The New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) confirmed on Thursday that Sir Graham had signed a part-time contract through to the end of next year.

He stepped down as All Blacks coach following their 8-7 win over France in last October’s World Cup final at Eden Park, and has been mulling over his future since.

NZRU chief executive Steve Tew said Sir Graham brought a huge wealth of experience and unparalleled success after eight years at the helm of the All Blacks.

Sir Graham, who coached the All Blacks to 88 wins in 103 Tests, said he was looking forward to the new challenge.

“New Zealand has an outstanding crop of up-and-coming international coaches and, if I can play a small part in helping them develop, then I will.”

Except Peter that McKenzie refuses to work with Deans and frankly who can blame him. Why would he play second fiddle to someone whose selections, tactics and game management could only be described as bizarre.

Lol @ Mark. Yes France could have had the abs but they missed their two penalties to take the game. that's rugby for you. You talk as if you know him personally. You should really stop worrying about nz rugby and their coaching and worry about your own team. So get a life sunshine. You can have the best players in the world but if you don't know how to utilise their skill then you end up with an average team e.g boks. A team full of talent but had a coach who had no idea. This is great for nz rugby to have a man of his experience helping up and coming nz coaches

hahaha mark, what a sore loser. the fact is he did win the WC and thats all that matters. the rest is what if's as Rugbug says its easy to get to the top, its hard to stay there. henry and AB's have been at the top of their sport since he took over. henry's accolades are immense. nice comment bout easy to win with the #1 side...how do u think they got to be #1 and stay there? the loss in 2007 couldnt be coached. wayneBarnes had it out for the AB's that day, those days happen. ref's have final control of any game and that day it just wasnt ours. your bitter mark, hope u enjoy your latest coaches winning record. johnno - henry will only be advisory picking the next AB's coach. Deans wont be coach for at least another 4 years and he has to improve his winning record before he'll be even considered. personally i dont think deans has proven enough to be the NZ coach. thats why we gave him to aus so he could get some much needed test level experience.

Oh boy Mark you are one twisted and bitter person. Graham Henry and the All Blacks defeated all comers at the World Cup including a bit of a trouncing of Australia in the semi finals. Unfortunately for many Australian fans they got sucked in after the Wallabies won a farce of a Tri-Nations where neither SA or NZ contested it seriously and expected more from their team than they were actually capable of delivering. If Australia had won by a similar margin you could guarantee that you would be saying that it was the best World Cup final of all time. Why should he take on coaching Argentina Mark? The man is 65 years of age and well and truly deserves to take it easy after everything he has acheived. You say it's easy to get the results when you have the number one team, I actully say to you its very hard being at the top and staying there, if it was easy Australia, SA and England would have similar records

Easy to get a %85 record with the number one team!!! 2011 world cup will be remembered for how well the minnow nations did, Henry...... Well very forgettable. Seemed to me the rest of the top rugby nations were all out off form bar Wales and Samoa. Less respect for the All Blacks and more, get in and get the job done by the other countries that played the All Blacks could've been a different result. France should've had the All Blacks in the final. Henry.......... He's just a grumpy old B&$@!$$!!!!!! Who's failings will be more remembered by me in the 2007 world cup. If he's so good, let's see him take on coaching Argentina in the rugby championship. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

New Zealand is lucky to have GH coaching the coaches. He's up-to-date and highly qualified. This means he will still be able to assist the All Blacks, if necessary. Austraia could do with this unity. There are three master coaches, Robbie Deans, Ewen McKenzie and Jake White. Working together, they would be the equal to a rugby university. But Deans and McKenzie have a complicted relationship...and no-one knows how JW will be received. He's smart and experienced, which could make him an outsider. Hopefully, circumstances will allow him to contribute, because he knows a lot.

This is great news because if John Eales can get off his lazy backside and get rid of the completely useless kiwi Deans, we can get a real Australian coach like McKenzie and can get sweet revenge ! I can smell it, I can feel it !

What an absolute troll Mark, I think if you do your homework properly you will find NZ did not send a full strength team on the return leg to South Africa either. The only one misguided and bitter here it seems you. The only country that can lay claim to fielding their best team all the way through the Tr-Nations is Australia

What a lot of people seem to forget is the amount of tests played by the two teams in the lead up and through the world cup. The all blacks played and extra four tests plus seven on the trot, even taking the quality of the teams in some of those tests, it was still a monumental ask. The final was the one game to far, but they still won and are world champions. I know the northern teams had lead up games to the world cup but that is know comparison to playing in a competition series. All the southern hemisphere teams play with this disadvantage at world cups, and still have won all but one cup. So henry getting the boys up for that last game and the defensive effort they put in he deserves everything that's coming to him.

Mark, it doesnt matter, he has an 85 percent winning record, the RWC, and he has helped deny the Wallabies of holding the Bledisloe since he started in 2004. He has admitted the AB's lost their way in the RWC final, but we all know the French are pyschos. Contrast that to Robbie who has lost to Samoa, Ireland, England, drawn with Scotland and presided over a record loss to the Bokkies.

You know, if France scored 8 and New Zealand scored 7, none of these opportunities would've come along for Henry. He would've gone down as New Zealand's worst coach. Now he gets knighted and a plethora of offers. I distinctly remember the worlds number one team getting knocked out of the quarters in the 2007 world cup, under Henry! Not only that, but they couldn't win the Tri Nations last year with a second string Springbok team. I think his so called success is misplaced! His "Sir" title is misguided. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.
