Big Brother TV coming to the A-League

By Athas Zafiris / Roar Guru

Yesterday I received this email from an anonymous source. I have republished it here in full for the benefit of A-League fans and to promote discourse on this issue.

Dear A-League Club Chairmen,

As you are no doubt aware our exclusive television rights deal with Fox runs out next year. I know we have had our differences in the past few years but I really need a big, big favour.

The very reason I was appointed CEO of the FFA was due to my ability to bring home the bacon with the new TV rights deals.

Check out my whiz-bang spiel printed in Daily Telegraph on TV innovation in the A-League.

“The experience for the TV viewer watching Australian sport has changed rapidly in the past few years. Football needs to embrace these trends to win our fair share of the audience in a highly competitive sports market.

New broadcast technology allows for innovations that take the viewer closer to the action and behind the scenes. They are new ways to tell the great stories and drama of a football match. The A-League has started to embrace these opportunities.”

Pretty impressive, don’t you think?

Anyway, I have been chatting to some of the producers at Fox Sports and they reckon I will be able to get some extra coin if you allow them to invade the privacy of the manager and his players in the dressing room.

We at the FFA think it’s a brilliant idea.

Fox Sports will set up microphones and cameras in the dressing room in order broadcast the manager’s address and players chatting to each other. The A-League is family friendly product and to meet this requirement Fox Sports will put in a small delay to allow for the bleeping out of foul language.

In order to boost the value of this innovation I am requesting Sydney FC and Melbourne Heart not to appoint foreign managers next season. What we need right now is style in the dressing room. Style on the football pitch will have to take a backseat.

For this to work we need managers fluent in the English language.

Neil Warnock is a perfect example.

We tested the bleeper on him and he passed with flying colours.

You will also be pleased to know that in my ceaseless pursuit to add value to the new TV deal I have spoken with the producers of Big Brother. They reckon I can get the A-League on free to air by allowing them to make a version “Up Late” by selling them the footage of the boys in the showers and the managers giving their team a bollocking with the bleeper off.

As you very well know gentlemen: “There is no business like show business.”

So if you want to receive the biggest dividend possible to fund your cash strapped club then I implore you to get your managers and players to sign their privacy away.

My legacy is in your hands.

Sincerely Yours,

Mr Buckley

Well, that's it then for the two Melbourne clubs. Jim Magilton will not be re-appointed at Melbourne Victory, because he only speaks Ulster, and the favourite for the Melbourne Heart job, Ernie Merrick will not be appointed because he speaks Scottish. Pity, it would have been fun seeing subtitled film of the joint press conference prior to the Derby.

Big AL. I'm assuming Cousins was on the verge of a big game - Conclusion by Media shove a camera in the dreesing sheds -Conclusion" the bird" and then Cousins is seen as not complying with society standards, sportspeople cant win with this pervert behaviour and that's all it is by voyueristic T.V. comapnies . I cannot recall watching a football match from Europe where cameras are in dressing sheds at big clubs ever, unless their cracking Champagne after the match / Premiership / Cup win of course . Though we seem to be obsessed with it in this Nation. T.V. companies can give me close up's of Cricketers sitting in the stands and then watch them in the field "riverting" .

and here is Ben Cousins' ( he of the famous fragile mental state) opinion of dressing room cameras. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlSicCPImhY BTW - he copped heaps for this - would have done wonders for his recuperation process!

What i loved about this clip was that the only time F was used correctly was when he was ranting about "du f*ckin geezer upstairs" & so on . Ah don't fink he fought much abart du way du team wus playin. Reminds of a joke from a more unsophisticated time.. Prisoner released from jail, first person he sees is a small cockney kid . "I'm free,I'm free" said the prisoner. "What yur braggin abart guv,so what arm four." Lame I know.

Yeah, for the 2nd Derby this year on December 23rd, the Victory fans arrived 1 hour early in big numbers, chanting 1 hour before the game which was too early even for the pre-game music! On the pre-game show you could hear the atmosphere from inside the studio while Mel, Ogg and Harper are talking amongst themselves, which is the first time I've seen this in the A-League for a very long time. The players were also warming up to the chanting, it felt like a huge game and made it the game seem even bigger than it normally is. For the 3rd Derby just the other week it was all pre-game music, very dull buildup to the game.

Kasey, I have those conversations nearly everyday, usually with old Hellas and Alexandros supporters, and am aware of the conspiracy theories. Funny thing is most of these guys choose not to attend games but will still watch A-league on TV so in that way are very much supporting the game. The other thing about them is none of them attend VPL games. ps: I'm old school, can remember my team Heidelberg winning things.

Agree 100%. At last Mebourne Derby the PA noise was blasting away in it's artificial way right until kick-off. Victory support is good enough and more so organised enough to create an atmosphere however Yarraside hasn't reached this and need cues or incidents from game to fire-up.One such cue being game is about to kick-off, better make some noise to lift the team.

exactly. if they need "filler" whats wrong with some decent analysis and commentary in and around the gametime, discussion of other games or developments? its a sad gimmick having that voyeuristic invasion into the changeroom.

The USA tried gimmicks whem MLS first started, count down clocks, penalty shoot outs to determine winners in a tied game. gimmicks just deminish the sport and make it look mickey mouse. The game is strong enough to stand on its own as a spectacle, without having to mike up coaches and the like. No thank you FFA. Incidentally eventually realizing the error of their ways, MLS introduced a Game First program in 1999 bringing their game back into line with world standards and they are looking pretty strong to me from here.

You are making way too much sense Axel V.

Yes Bondy, unlike Mr. Buckley, it doesn't ring my bell either. This prompted me to publish the leaked email ;-)

Do not want gimmicks and invasion of privacy of the teams... I want football. If they want to enhance our viewing experience, get a spider cam (one of the best angels to see a counter attack and goals) and stop showing replays of useless incidents during play... And also what enhances the TV experience is hearing the crowd chant before the game, it suggests a build up to something big (the match), something that shouldn't be heard inside the studio yet the crowd is so loud that it is, turn off the ridiculous pre-game music and you will atmospheres before kickoff while reading the team sheet and as the players come onto the pitch instead of MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC, PA ANNOUNCER LETS HEAR IT FOR THE PLAYERS, yayyyyyy... You will hear the stadium atmosphere!

Wolfie, I suggest you try yourself to talk to anybody connected with ‘ old-soccer’ If you thought current football fans were only to eager to play the victim card, then you really ought to get a load of some of the woe-is us gripes emanating from that sector f football fans. They believe that the SocAus and FFA had it in for them for years leading to the demise of the NSL and the establishment of the HAL. I reckon there is absolutely nothing that the FFA can do to reach out the olive branch to them now. That bridge is well and truly burned. Assuming an FFA Cup gets off the ground, no matter what format it takes it will inevitably create more ‘reasons why the FFA is out to get old soccer’ and I predict will please nobody. For proper reconciliation to take place, both parties have to want to come together and I just don’t get the impression that one of the 2 parties in the old soccer/new football schism care enough about each other to bother trying. The only way I see it happening is if FFA Stumble across a metric truckload of money somehow(TV rights deals, sponsorship, any how – any way) and old Soccer decides it needs to play nice to get a slice of that pie. Even then, I can’t see why FFA would bother with a sector that is constantly bad mouthing and white-anting the HAL with ultra-negativity supposedly from within the football community itself. FFA have shown they are negligent in recognizing the history of the game in this country prior to 2005 and the only way see that changing is by current fans showing the interest and initiative to get educated about what went before the current set up. Again, even that takes 2 parties. Who is going to want to learn about the history of the game when those that lived it and were so passionate about it are quick to ridicule “new dawners” and ‘plastic fans”? If they show even the slightest ignorance or disrespect (perceived or real) to old soccer. If this sounds like I am blaming one party over the other, then perhaps I am sick of being called childish names and having the olive branch shoved back in MY face when I try to learn more about the history of the game here. I speak from personal experience. I can only imagine how bad it must be for those only just getting interested in football and not yet a die-hard like me.

Not a fan of the idea, sounds like a move AWAY from the "we are football"-lets worry about getting football people to take an interest first- that was the success of this season.

I tend to agree with jmac, I watch the odd N.R.L. game in winter and the ref never shuts up "miked up" it's bloody annoying not entertaining . It's a matter of opinion and everyone has one I find it annoying when H.A.L. players are interviewed at half time .I believe that the coaches and players dressing sheds are their inner sanctum not our's to voyueristacally perv on . I understand Art in the modern world of sport T.V. companies want more and more "fly on the wall " moments but it doesn't necessarily ring my bell, maybe I'm to old school . In the theme of the article though I will leave you with this little gem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fB9rI7p7vmk ) .
