How to watch AFL in 2012

With the AFL pre-season competition kicking off this week, it’s timely to examine the different AFL broadcasting packages and providers available to Australians in 2012.

Free to Air (FTA) TV

Provider: Channel Seven (exclusive)
■ Three matches per week live and one on delay (in Victoria) on Channel Seven
■ Matches will differ depending on the state you live in, per anti-siphoning rules. Some matches shown in Victoria featuring Melbourne clubs won’t be shown in other states, where local clubs will feature in at least two of the FTA games

Internet and PC Coverage

Provider: Bigpond AFL
■ Free, but data charges apply for non-Telstra customers
■ All games broadcast on replay, but no live football (roughly 12-hour delay)
■ Unmetered for Telstra Bigpond customers and NextG and 4G handset owners
■ Limited in availability outside Australia

Provider: LiveAFL.tv (currently redirecting to LiveSport.tv)
■ Subscription cost of $US19.95
■ Available in Europe, Great Britain, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Africa and New Zealand
■ Live matches, full match replays, match highlights, post match interviews
■ Great Britain, Ireland, the USA and Canada will have access to live streams of five matches per week, with the remaining three matches available on delay
■ Europe, Africa and New Zealand will have access to live streams of eight matches per week

Provider: Optus TV Now
■ Free, but must be an Optus 3G customer
■ FTA channels only (four games per week, limited to home state)

Mobile Coverage

Provider: Optus Mobile
■ Free
■ Channel 7 FTA coverage on 90-second delay (subject to broadcast times)
■ Four matches per week on 90-second delay (does not feature Fox or Telstra exclusive matches)
■ Can be recorded for later viewing
■ Up to $10 per month for 20 hours recording
■ Data free on the Optus network when using TV Now app
■ Must be a current Optus 3G customer to access service
■ FTA viewing only applicable to customer’s home state
■ Can be replayed through computer

AFL Live
Provider: Telstra Mobile
■ $5 per game, $10 per month, $50 per season
■ All games live
■ Includes NAB Cup
■ Data free on the NextG network
■ Live game radio
■ On-demand replays
■ Live stats and scores
■ Included free if you have Foxtel from Telstra (not Foxtel from Foxtel or Tbox)
■ Must be a Telstra NextG or 4G customer to subscribe

Pay TV

Provider: Austar (Foxtel from Austar)
■ $64.50 per month on a 12 month contract
■ All matches live, except for the Grand Final
■ Dedicated Foxfooty channel during the season
■ Package includes Starter ($43) and Sports ($18)
■ Limited availability (satellite coverage outside of cable areas only)

Provider: Foxtel (from Foxtel)
■ All matches live, except for the Grand Final
■ Dedicated Foxfooty channel during the footy season
■ Includes the NAB Cup, exclusive to Foxtel except for the Grand Final
■ Starts February 17th
■ $81 per month on a 12 month plan
■ 12 dedicated sports channels, including Foxfooty
■ Includes 45 foxtel channels
■ 12 Channels of HD including Foxfooty

Provider: Telstra (Foxtel from Telstra)
■ $77 per month for first six months, $92 for the last six months
■ Comes with free AFL live mobile NextG or 4G pass (worth $50)
■ All games live, except for Grand Final
■ Includes Foxfooty from February 17th

Xbox

Provider: AFL Play (Foxtel on Xbox)
■ Eight matches live, except for the Grand Final
■ Does not include the match that is broadcast for Telstra mobile and Tbox customers
■ NAB Cup matches exclusive to Foxtel (Final also on FTA)
■ Starts February 17th
■ Requires Xbox and Broadband connection
■ Requires Xbox live gold pass
■ Requires Starter ($19) and Sport ($10) packs
■ Can be done monthly or for the season without contract
■ $49.50 per month for AFL Play
