Sutherland upset by Haddin confusion

By Ed Jackson / Wire

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland says Brad Haddin is out of the national set-up due to poor form and is disappointed over the confusion surrounding his status.

Sutherland says Haddin has always been aware of the situation and has had regular dialogue with selectors and public confusion over whether the wicketkeeper had been rested or axed was regrettable.

“We’re not comfortable with the level of uncertainty and public discussion on this particular matter,” Sutherland told reporters in Sydney on Friday.

“The really important thing though for us, and the real focus in recent times … has been to the players and perhaps that area of improving that for the public’s benefit just needs to be touched up on as well.”

Sutherland was at pains to not actually criticise the national selectors over the confusion, saying it had been more of a problem in the communication process than anything else.

He said the public deserved to know why certain selection decisions were being taken and hoped the situation would be avoided in the future.

“Looking back on it, something clearly has gone awry there and that’s something we need to be clearer on,” he said.

“If there are things that need to be made clearer in the public place and they’re not then they’re things we need to improve.

“We owe that to cricket fans and the country.”

I thought Sutherland was the CA CEO. As such I would have thought it was his job to run the commercial side of the organisation and let the "cricket" people run the team and any associated issues. If it's transparency he wants then I'm not sure he's helping by commenting on things which are not his domain. If he is indeed the ultimate boss of the entire organisation, and everybody actually reports to him - directly or otherwise, then perhaps a quiet word in the appropriate ear would serve better than a public comment. Especially if there's a bit of tut tutting to be done. Praise in public, criticise in private.

Anyway, Haddin gets a pair in the pathetic excuse for a first class match that NSW are putting on in Perth. At this rate, it's not whether he'll play for Australia again, he might not get a match for NSW again given that they dropped Nevill for this match.

"He (Sutherland) said the public deserved to know why certain selection decisions were being taken and hoped the situation would be avoided in the future." I heard on Sydney radio that the head of selectors (who works full time for CA now), is only available for questions at organised media events, and is not available for interviews (ever). If that is true, it is pretty obvious what needs to change. But Sutherland is pathetic - spineless. He needs an "independent report" done before he makes a decision or takes an action on anything.
