Tony McGahan, the head coach at Irish provincial team Munster, will leave the club at end of season to become the defensive coach for Australia. McGahan will serve under Robbie Deans next season.

His arrival in the Australian line-up will be a useful addition for the Wallabies, especially considering the 2013 Lions tour.

McGahan will be leaving the Irish province with a number of cups and league title under his belt. He was defensive coach under Declan Kidney with Munster when they won the Heineken Cup in 2006 and doubled up as backs coach for their 2008 triumph.

He took over the reins as head coach when Kidney left to coach the national team. His European successes faltered but he still led Munster to two Pro 12 titles in the last four years.

The Queensland-born coach had been offered another one-year extension at the province with the option of a further year.

Munster is going through a period of transition. Recent moves by the IRFU regarding use of foreign players are beginning to take hold. New players must be found to replace the likes of stalwarts Paul O’Connell, Ronan O’Gara and David Wallace.

Anthony Foley, the former Munster captain, and current forwards coach, is a favourite to take over from the Australian.
