Cameron Meyer capped off GreenEDGE’s strong week at the Tirreno-Adriatico by coming third in the individual time trial and elevating himself to a top-ten finish overall.
Swiss time trial maestro Fabian Cancellara won the 9.3km final stage of the race across Italy in San Benedetto del Tronto with Meyer finishing 16 seconds behind him.
The versatile young Australian’s performance lifted him to 10th place on general classification, 1 minute and 33 seconds behind Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali who edged out American Chris Horner on the last stage.
Meyer completed a strong showing by the new GreenEDGE outfit after blitzing the field in the team time trial on the opening day.
“This is the best time trial I have ever done in this type of racing situation,” Meyer said.
“It gives me a lot of confidence to be able to beat all of the GC guys on the last time trial after really, really hard days of racing and looking after my position on the overall.
“The other times that I’ve raced a time trial at a high profile race likes this, I have only focused on the time trial effort.
“I have rested up on the stages before in order to produce the best effort in the TT.
“This was a different approach.”
The result continued Meyer’s steady progress towards becoming a potential contender in the grand tours down the track.
“It gives me a really good perspective for this type of racing,” he said.
Meanwhile Cadel Evans started turning his sights towards the two-day Criterium International in Corsica starting March 24 following a tough week at the office.
The Tour de France champion came 49th in the time trial, some 44 seconds off the pace.
Evans, who won last year’s Tirreno-Adriatico, finished 32nd overall and 12:55 behind Nibali.
“I didn’t have the smoothest off-season like I did last year, so there was always the risk that I wasn’t going to be at the level I was last year,” Evans said.
“Looking at it analytically, I’m not riding so poorly as the results would indicate.
“But there are a lot of people who were riding really well here at a high level of competition.
“So in the scheme of things I am looking forward to the rest of the season.”
