New Sydney A-League team to be announced

Football Federation Australia boss Ben Buckley will announce a new western Sydney A-League team on Wednesday, it has been reported.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard will join Mr Buckley for the announcement and pledge $5 million of investment in grassroots football for Sydney’s west, The Daily Telegraph reports.

The creation of a new western Sydney A-League team has been discussed for several years but the plan has faltered in part because of the lack of a financial backer.

With uncertainty now surrounding Gold Coast United’s participation next season, after owner Clive Palmer was stripped of his licence, the FFA appears determined to have at least 10 teams for the 2012-13 season.

The FFA may also be keen to encourage football fans in western Sydney following the launch of the AFL’s Greater Western Sydney Giants.

The Telegraph reports the western Sydney A-League team will launch next season and be funded by FFA.

Its strip colours and badge may be decided by a popular vote.

Recruitment of players and a coach is set to begin immediately.

Ms Gillard will announce $3 million to redevelop the Football NSW headquarters at Parklea, the Telegraph said.

A further $5 million of federal funding will be spent on growing the sport’s popularity in the western suburbs.
