Anthony Mundine vs Danny Green inches closer

By John Davidson / Roar Guru

Anthony Mundine has ducked fellow WBA junior middleweight title holder Austin Trout, as a rematch with fellow Aussie Danny Green starts to firm up.

Mundine’s camp failed to turn up at a recent WBA purse pid in Panama, scuppering plans for a mandatory matchup between Mundine (interim champion) and the American Trout (regular champion).

The Trout camp has slammed Mundine, while the 36-year old Australian has hit and called Trout “laughable” and a “nobody”.

“If he came with a name and came with some pulling power (I’d fight him) – but I’m not going to let him use me and take my money,” Mundine told Fox Sports.

“Austin Trout is a no-name. He’s getting desperate. He’s like a desperate dude that’s looking for a pay day.”

This whole episode is laughable. Mundine says he wants the big fights, he wants to take on the top fighters in the US.

Trout is the regular WBA champion. He is undefeated after 24 pro fights and is only 26 years old.

There are only two reasons Mundine doesn’t want to fight Trout – he isn’t getting enough money (in his eyes) for the bout, or he is worried about beating Trout.

Mundine seems to be forgetting that he isn’t a big name in America. He isn’t going to be thrown big money in the States without winning some fights and defeating some name boxers there. Trout would be one.

The only other “bigger” fights out there for Mundine would the WBA super champion Miguel Cotto, the WBC champion Saul Alvarez or the IBF champion Cornelius Bundrage (probably not the two WBO Eastern European belt holders). Or Mundine may want to go up in weight to fight WBA middleweight super champion Felix Sturm or WBC champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

But a world title fight is not going to jump out from nowhere. Mundine has to earn it. Beating Trout would do that. But sadly it won’t happen.

Making money before he retires, not leaving a lasting legacy, is what Mundine appears to be focusing on.

He says the people want a rematch with Green.

Sure, it would make a stack of money and bring in the punters who rarely ever follow boxing. Their first fight made more money than any other pro fight in Australian history. But Green is 39, now fighting at crusierweight or light heavyweight, and has badly lost his last two bouts. This would be a cash grab, pure and simple.

If Mundine wants to beat the best, and make history then he should fight Trout. Do it for your reputation, not your bank balance for once. Or even better, IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale.

Bouts with Trout or Geale would make better fights, but less money than a Green clash. And that sadly, is what boxing is all about today.

Prepared to be scummed again Aussie fight fans.

I have just seen a report that Mundine has been stripped of his WBA interim super welterwight title for failing to set up a fight with Austin Trout. The report goes on to quote Mundine as saying " I just want to go after Mayweather, I don't want nobody else. He's the only one on my level". If he really believes this rubbish, he needs urgent professional help.

Mundine seems to have this sense of entitlement and a deluded belief anyone in the world of boxing gives a damn about him. Trout doesn't even have a real title but then Mundine hasn't won a real title either. He beat a guy who hadn't fought in over a year and still had a bullet in him in one of the poorest fights I've seen to win a fake title. Then he beat another guy who wasn't a world champ to win another fake title. Then got beat by Geale and 'got the decision' in a Mundine promotion and won a nonsense world title. Then refused a rematch when ordered by the joke IBO. He will always be remembered as average fighter, average footballer and a loud mouth coward.

There is no point Mundine fighting Daniel Geale. He has already beaten Geale. It might have been good for Mundine to fight Trout but why should he. When he wanted to fight big American names, none would fight him. Pavlik avoided him for years. Now on the back end of his career when he should be focussing on making money, an American champ finally decides to fight him. Why should he, what does he owe the americans after none of them would fight him before

Their is still plenty of nterest in seeing these two go around again however this talk of giving away ten kilos is grazy . If Mundine and Green are serious it should be fought at the same weight. Regardless of what people may think this fight will be a pay tv winner and the promoters know it And yes the knockers will be out their putting their two bobs worth in but both the Mundine and Green camps know its the best payday on offer in Aus and it is most liklely their last , so bring it on i say lets have another look at these two bigmouths do it again one or both should retire when its done.

Mundine is a joke. He has no heart. He thinks he's better than he is. He should stay in Aus fighting nobodies and stop pretending he's a "name". He's a bum who gets beat whenever he steps up. He got put to sleep against Ottke! He is an embarrasment to the sweet science. "Choc" fans that try to argue he is right to do this are as insane as the man himself. Retire you bum.

As a long time Mundine fan I was devastated to hear Green fight talk. I have always waited for Mundine to follow his talk and make a name in the US and sadly it looks like he will choose money over legacy. Noone cares about Green v Mundine anymore, what we want is to see Mundine mix it with the top stars in the US. Why wouldn't you take the Trout fight and make it happen in the US. Trouts next fight was being discussed as a nationally televised US fight, what better way than for Anthony to show what he can do in front of a big audience. If he beats Trout convincingly then it sets the stage to step up again and fight a bigger name and now he would start gathering some television network backing which is what he needs to do. Possibly a Cotto fight would eventuate within 1 or 2 more fights. Instead, if he fights Green he can basically kiss any US recognition away. Noone is going to give him anymore opportunities over there as he keeps aging with no known opponents in recent years. If we are talking domestic fights why wouldn't you chase Geale who has stated an interest in revenge? Again this fight should occur in the US as Geale already has set in place an option to fight his next fight on US television. This would be a perfect opportunity for Mundine to claim a legitimate belt and gain a US backing. Say it aint so Anthony. Please give your fans a chance to see you against the best by building that up over a few US wins. Billy Dib and Geale are able to put themselves in a position to fight in the US, so please stop conning your fans saying it can't be done. You have more money than them put together so you are in a perfect position to take a pay cut for one or two fights to achieve the bigger fights. In your prime I truly believe when focused you could beat anyone, I hope it doesn't pass you by. When you knocked Sam Soliman out in your 2nd fight with him I thought I was about to see you go on to become the greatest fighter Australia has ever seen. Sadly the wait to see you realise your potential seems to be dragging on forever & seems to be in great jeopardy as you continue to age & now focus back on has beens like Green.

Even the most ardent mundine supporters must be sick of his rubbish. i seriously doubt if he'll even take on Green, if he does he'll get caught and drop like a sack of spuds. what happened to fight JCC and then wlodaryck? hahaha what a joke, think the joke is also on the media outlets for publishing his dribble, particulary the daily astonisher, who after bagging him for years, got behind his apparent push for world domination. Mundine will be remember as someone who peaked at the beggining of his career, then decided to ruin himself by dropping in weight divisions and fighting sub standard oppostion.

Green would kill him. Like actually kill him. Mundine isn't the fighter he was when they first fought each other and it would probably end up like the Briggs farce.

For starters both Sturm and chavez jr would wipe their arses with mundine infact, he would barely qualify as a sparing partner for either fighter. Exactly who does mundine think he's gonna fight? Mayweather or pacman??? the clock is ticking for choc as it is for Green and Australia has been chomping at the bit for a rematch. It wont mean anything but it will be entertaining to see how it pans out 6 yrs later. forget conquering the world lads the machine is 39 and the mouth oops man is 37 so f**k the USA and lets give Australia an entertaining bout. Leave the title fights to the new blood.

Sam Mundine could have fought Trout for his title. Who else is going to fight Mundine in the US? He isn't a big name over there and won't be offered big fights, at least if he beat Trout he would have something to offer opponents. At the moment he doesn't have the drawing power to make a fight attractive for US pay per view sales and he isn't the draw here that he once was.

Green knows he can't win he's way out of his league it's 2006 all over again, but if he can convince the Mundine haters he can win the fight will generate millions, that's why he's persisted with the weight loss excuses for all these years, in case of a rematch and another big payday. We all know Green was a career supermiddleweight and certainly is no cruiserweight but just a remote chance of him winning even if it is just wishful thinking will be enough to fool the punters and get the dollars rolling in.

What people don't understand is Trout is not a big name, he only has the second best WBA belt and is not in rings top 10 and has just the one televised fight on little known Sho box. Mundine did not go to the US to fight Trout. According to Fox news Mundine offered Trout 40% to fight in Aus and he knocked it back. Green accepted 33% in 2006 and made 2 million. The biggest slice of the pie always goes to the biggest drawcard, Mundine is ten years older with twice the fights 3 world titles including a genuine full WBA supermid world title in 2004. Mundine has 3 top 5 scalps including dominant one sided wins over Green and Echols. Trout won his vacant regular title against world #51 R. Alvarez his best win against #23 Lopez. Mundine is the big name here he should call the shots he's the one generating the money people don't pay to see Austin Trout fight that's been proven.

Green aint that much better than Mundine people!!! Whenever he has stepped up, he was beaten badly. He still makes excuses for his loss to Mundine and tried to fight another over the hill fighter in Tarver and had hiss ass handed to him. Green is just as much after the cash as Mundine and taking the lime light from the young up and coming fighters in this country. Fight one last time and hang up the gloves and give the young guns a crack at the top.

I cannot believe what a joke Mundine has become. He goes to the US saying he wants to fight big fights and for belts, then he doesn't even turn up to the purse bid for the mandatory title fight with Trout. He should just hand up the gloves, what is another fight with a semi retired Green going to prove? Besides which how is Mundine going to beat anyone after his recent performances? Just give it up Anthony. When Garth Woods beats you what is the point of going on?

Indeed there is no purpose to a Mundine v Green rematch. Mundine is scared of being beaten by Trout & with good reason.
