Forget the Olympics, what about an Olympiad year?

By simonjzw / Roar Pro

I think most of us are over the overblown corporate and media hype surrounding the Olympic Games. We are completely nonplussed by the money the International Olympic Committee (IOC) makes and the dodgy bidding processes involved.

My solution is to disband or dramatically reduce the IOC and National Olympic Committees.

They should replace the quadrennial fortnight extravaganza with a Olympiad Year, to take place once every four years.

During the Olympiad Year each sport chooses its own Olympic venue and conducts its once-every-four-year Olympic Event.

The sport puts on the event and retains the profits and athletes still receive Olympic Medals. The venues and times would be coordinated to ensure a even spread around the world and over the calendar year.

The Olympiad celebration would last most of the year and not just two weeks.

This way local sporting competitions aren’t compromised and sports fans have the pleasure of profile events occurring at regular intervals during the year.

Furthermore, host cities would only have to produce high-quality venues for the sports they are hosting.

It would also put an end to the days of Olympic villages!

The flame would pass from event to event and be extinguished at the conclusion of the final event. Winter and summer sports would both be held in the one year.

I can’t see it ever happening because of the power and wealth of the IOC. After all, who would give that up voluntarily? Plus, we all know that the athletes love the party.

But this proposal makes much more sense.

Your plan sounds good initially. But the more I analyse your idea. The feeling I get is overkill, and too much off a good thing. So apply the less is ms more theory, and cram many of the worlds sports into 17 days of full on sport, for the keen sports fan, and lovers of sport. The word Olympiad year would wear off after each sports event and the feeling of overkill, and killing the golden goose, and too much of a good thing, that it would lose it's meaning and no longer be special. I am happy for example. The T20 cricket world cup is now every 2 years not every year. As it is more special that way. That is another example of less is more. The word Olympiad year run over a whole calander year is simply too tiring. And cricket has had the same problem as the theory you suggest. The idea of a test cricket world cup has been mooted for decades, but has never happened because too stage one would take to long and fans would get bored so it would lose it's momentum and tension and excitement if it was a tournament. One day cricket already struggles with it's cricket world cup being criticised for being too long. Rugby world cup is about 6 weeks and a bit around the 44 or 45 day mark. Soccer is about 32 or 33 days. Olympics is about 17 days. Too long you theory of an Olympiad. Overkill emotions, would be felt if your Olympiad theory was put into practice.
