Waratahs Rugby reports profit

By News / Wire

Waratahs Rugby have reported a net operating profit of $49,990 for 2011, their first full financial year of operation.

In June 2010, the New South Wales Rugby Union established NSW Waratahs Ltd, an independent subsidiary, and granted it a licence to administer all aspects of professional rugby in NSW, including the Waratahs’ participation in the Super Rugby competition.

The result is the state’s best in five years and comes off the back of a $201,939 loss for the six months to December 2010.

Waratahs Rugby contributed $1,175,000 to the community game through licence fees and other grants to New South Wales Rugby Union.

Revenue rose in the sponsorship, membership and corporate hospitality areas.

“This financial result is an exceptional achievement for the whole of Waratahs Rugby and all of our stakeholders,” said NSWRU chief executive officer Jason Allen.

“For the management team to turn around the business in such a short period of time is testament to the commitment and desire of everyone here to deliver a sustainable future for Rugby in NSW.”

I'm with you and I'm saying that having paid for everyone in our party. :( And let me tell you that it was only the Scottish AFL supporting contingent of our group that didn't enjoy the occasion. God almighty. AFL & Scottish. What chance did I have of pleasing him? None & Buckley's I imagine! The rest of us had an absolute ball and went home very happy despite getting rolled. ;)

Perhaps you're right levelhead, but how is it that the AFL manage to attract big crowds, even to fairly non-event games? Are they giving tickets away? Are these games not telecast? Justifying poor turnouts by saying that the public are too lazy to go along is simply a tacit admission of defeat. The fact is that Rugby is losing the promotional battle, like it or not and the ultimate wash up will be the continuing decline in performance by Australian sides, including the Wallabies.

You blokes are mad, aggregate the average ticket sale and it more like $25 for an adult - look online - you can get a family in for $50! Of course there are other seats that are more expensive, because they are better seats!!! Like a concert, the better the seat, the higher the price. In fact, from memory these guys have dropped the ticket prices this year and still whinging, hilarious!!! Lazy, you folks and if you rock up at the gate you deserve to pay more than booking online before the game and the Waratahs don't increase their prices at the gate like the NRL and AFL. Uncle Eric, those crowds are of an era before live at the gate telecast mate, they just will not happen across any code in this town. A reliable source in sport informed me that the crowd for Swans verses GWS was juiced up with 14,000 ticket giveaways - c'mon everyone a good crowd in Sydney these days is 20k as people are too lazy and sit at home and watch it. fact the broadcast numbers state it!! So mate, I'm only interested in facts, not terse, non educated opinions! I am constantly amazed at the bashers out there - it was a great game, at great prices and I'm proud to be a positive support not a whinger!

Absolutely right Peter. Better to have average crowds of 40,000+ creating a great atmosphere, paying an average of say $25 per head giving a gross gate of $1,000,000, than to have 15,000 paying an average of $45 per head, providing lots of gaps in the crowd, no atmosphere and gate revenue of $675,000. Make it affordable and entertaining, promote it and you never know........ Rugby is a very good, marketable product which is losing the promotional battle to league and afl.

A fan goes to watch the Waratahs and feels he is swindled by the marketers. The solution? Call him a whinger.

BG - they do! Understand the fundamentals of your debate, and as Manoa states write a letter to the Waratahs or the Stadium management and then peacefully go away! It was a great day on Sunday and wonderful for the game!

BG a map of the seatign arrange can be seen here (click on Venue Map). http://premier.ticketek.com.au/shows/show.aspx?sh=WARABULL12 The General Admission seats may look empty but it doesn't they weren't sold out. People buy them and move to different sections. I've been caught in a similar situation like yourself, I now buy tickets in advance rather than game day. On Sunday my wife chose the option to have the ticket sent to her mobile phone. Cost more than printing it, but worked well.

BG, grow up and stop whinging. I'm sick of people just continually trotting out rubbish to have a crack at the waratahs. If you have a problem, rather than whinging and throwing your hands up in the air, how about you write a letter to the waratahs about the issues you faced and try and get some feedback that may improve not only your spectator experience but others that may have experienced similar issues, and stop playing the private school thing as if to try and portray yourself as some type of salt of the earth person, I couldn't care less about your or anybodies financial or educational background. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

GUys, read this properly, they made a profit greater than $1.2m then disbursed the funds back into the game. But, of course the negative sentiments swings tha day! BG - the top area you are discussing is reserved for the SFS members, not Rugby members. we should know our facts before pointing our fingers!

I'm sure the gouging at the game on Sunday is going to help in the short term. I rocked up with my elderly father to grab a couple of the $20 general admission tickets for an afternoon of watching the game I love and was raised on. Only to be swindled into having to buy "Gold seating" ($44 each) because there was no longer any general seating available. Then finding myself sitting inline with the in goal area with loads of empty seats throughout the area behind the posts just to my right ( which I assume is the general admission area). The top deck was also virtually completely empty. I don't know if this is a ploy to make the stadium look like it has more punters in it, but I will not be going back to anyTah games after being so blatantlyripped off. Not all rugby fans are born into priviledge and have parents that could afford to out source the raising of their children at boarding schools. To then be allowed into the old boy network. Myself and many others I grew up with that were passionate about the sport have finally come to realise that this is a game for the rich and priviledged. It shows throughout every level of the game. From the school boy level where the GPS boys are segregated from the plebs in the government schools and local saturday competitions through to the top heavy nature of how the ARU runs and funds the game. The ARU and Rugby in Australia has eroded the base for too long and is now going to pay the consequences. As a once true believer that the game of rugby is the greatest game of all that can be played and supported by people of all shapes and sizes, cultures and backgrounds. It breaks my heart So long and good luck Your going to need it!!!!!!

Not a huge profit, but it's better to be in the black. Given the year they had last year it's remarkable they did have a profit. Imagine what'll happen if they have a good year ;) Now who will be the first to ridicule the last sentence...
