Fremantle’s strong finish to their match against Gold Coast might have saved the AFL from a major time-keeping embarrassment.
The league is investigating an apparent blunder on Saturday at Metricon Stadium where the time clock stopped for 39 seconds in the last term after play had resumed.
Fremantle kicked three of the last four goals to win by seven points, with Tendai Mzungu soccering through the last goal of the match with only one second left.
AFL media manager Patrick Keane said their football department would review the printout of the timekeeping log on Monday.
“We’ll marry that up with the vision of the game,” he said.
The league will most likely release a statement on Monday afternoon about what happened.
It appears that with seven minutes and 55 seconds left in the match, the time clock failed to re-start.
The Suns’ Campbell Brown had just goalled to put his team up by five points and the clock seemed to temporarily stop immediately after the next centre bounce.
Fremantle kicked three of the next four goals to win the match.
Gold Coast’s Harley Bennell goalled with two minutes and 29 seconds left to reduce their deficit to one point and that was the margin with 39 seconds left.

I just think that overall the Suns got a raw deal from the umpires on the day.

it should also be noted that if theclock had kept running as it was meant to that Fremantle would have still picked up chocolates. so the insinuation that the umpires cost the gc the win is plain wrong.

The time keepers involved are likely to get a bit of a holiday after this. This is just one out of a few things that went against the Suns on the day - anyone who thinks the Suns are getting an easy ride from the umps are dead wrong! At one point, near the Freo goals, the Freo ruckman took the ball directly from the boundary throw in and was caught red hot with the ball - should have been an automatic free kick to the Suns!! Freo scored a goal straight after that. Also, the commentators reckon that a goal was given to Freo that actually went the wrong side of the post. So Suns copped the wrong end of all the crucial decisions on the weekend.
