Greg Inglis is back

By Sluggers / Roar Rookie

As a Broncos fan, I was licking my lips at the prospect of Greg Inglis joining the Broncos from the Melbourne Storm back in 2010.

At the time Darren Lockyer’s career was drawing to a close. I thought it was perfect timing, send a champion out on a good note and bring in a player that could well replicate his champion status in years to come.

We all know what happened. Inglis took a tour of the Broncos facilities, received a call from Russell Crowe and eventually signed with Souths (not before threatening to sign with Essendon).

To be a fly on the wall during that Maximus discussion.

At the time I was disappointed the Broncos didn’t sign Inglis. However had they signed him, the dynamics of that roster would have changed significantly. The Broncos may not have retained good young players like Alex Glenn, Matt Gillett, Josh McGuire and Josh Hoffman and we may not have heard of Jack Reed.

This brings me to Inglis now at the Rabbitohs. The switch to full back has proved a master stroke in two ways.

Not only is Inglis exhibiting exceptional skills at the back and will start pushing the great Billy Slater as the best fullback in the game, but he is looking happy. Inglis looks like a kid kicking the footy around in the backyard. This is only going to be infectious to the playing group around him.

A happy Inglis is a sight Souths fans should crave for and opposition teams vying for a premiership should fret about.

But even for fans of other clubs, as a general league lover we should look forward to many more years of Inglis lighting up the field as he has done so over the past few weeks.

At 25 years old and with at least another seven years in the game, Souths should sign this kid for life and just maybe obtain that elusive premiership.

He never really went anywhere. Poor start to 2011 yes but had a good 2nd half of the year. As a comparison his 2010 was as good as slaters( hinchcliffe won storms poty before the fb's protest) and his 2009 was better.

There is an old saying "when Southa are doing well, Rugby League is doing well". It's good to see the bunnies looking dangerous; I think our game needs at least one grand old side going well, and with the rabbits, dogs and Sea Eagles all going well that is great for our game. Ingles has been sensational, and you can see his team mates going from strength to strength around him. As long as he stays on the park and is playing with confidence it really could be the beginning of something for souths. Up the bunnies!
