Will Floyd Mayweather become the greatest?

By Trent Kyle / Roar Rookie

Floyd Mayweather is the biggest name in boxing. Period. He has a commanding record of 43 wins and 0 losses.

Fighting professionally for 16 years, he has never tasted defeat.

Mayweather boasts unbeatable defence having never been knocked out in 43 fights. He uses an old school technique known as the “shoulder roll” and very rarely gets cleanly hit. He has finished fights looking like he just went for a run not baring any scars or cuts.

He possesses some of the fastest hands in boxing. He is the biggest name in boxing and that’s why his fights have consistently broken pay per view records. He has won fights against boxing legends Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosley (who was undefeated at the time) Ricky Hatton and Diego Coralles, Mexican hero Juan Manuel Marquez and Jose Luis Castillo.

Mayweather’s fight with De La Hoya set the record of 2.4 million pay per view buys, but it has been said his most recent fight with Cotto may well break that record once the numbers come in.

Mayweather has formed a strong relationship with TV network HBO and the money he makes from these fights has set an unprecedented high for money in sport. Last week he fought Miguel Cotto the current WBA Super World light middleweight champion.

Mayweather won the fight in a unanimous decision scored 117-111 on two cards. Mayweather used his renowned speed and defence to secure the victory. Before the fight he was given the biggest guaranteed purse ever in boxing, a record $32 million. After the fight Mayweather said his team “would do numbers” and the total would be around $60-70 million.

There are many great fighters and legends throughout boxing history, with Muhammad Ali known as perhaps the greatest of all time. Floyd’s record of whom he has fought, the class he has won all of the fights with as well as his unmatched earnings all support his case to be known as the best ever.

The one fight left on everyone’s mind is the match-up of with Manny Pacquiao, who has 54 wins, three losses and two draws. Floyd could well surpass all the legends of the sport with a victory against Pacquiao.

Negotiations continue, but Pacquiao doesn’t want to take Olympic standard blood testing that Mayweather wants close to the fight, as he believes it will weaken him, leading to doping rumours.

Mayweather is the number one in the welterweight division world rankings, with Pacquiao at number two. Floyd Mayweather called out Bob Arum (Pacquiao’s boss) saying he had offered $40million and he still won’t agree.

Floyd has to be the favourite for the Pacquiao fight, as he has dominated the only man that has troubled Manny, Juan Manuel Marquez. If he wins, it will silence the debate as to who is the best of all time.

As Roger Mayweather(Floyd's trainer and uncle) likes to say, "you don't know s**t about boxing!" 1. ODH was the cash cow at the time. Only an idiot would've turned down that fight. The sport is called PRIZE fighting. The ODH fight was the vehicle which has propelled Floyd to greatness in the general public's eye and enabled him to create the 24/7 show which has made him untold hundreds of millions of dollars. 2. Castillo gave Floyd a hell of a fight in the first fight, but the vast majority of his punches did not land cleanly. Floyd fought that fight with a torn shoulder rotator cuff and still was victorious. He decided to rematch him just for good measure and absolutely killed Castillo in the second fight. 3. Immediately prior to the Sugar Shane fight, the likes of Bob Arum and Freddie Roach were convinced that Sugar would beat Floyd. You also conveniently forget that Mosley was coming off a career-defining victory over Margacheato. 4. Being critical of Floyd for making the Hatton fight at welterweight is yet another idiotic comment. Floyd was the undisputed P4P champion at the time and had himself moved up 4 weight classes by this point. Hatton was challenging for the P4P crown and had previously fought at welterweight (successfully). Was it so unreasonable for Floyd to ask Hatton to move up to a weight he had already competed, given that Hatton walked around at 170lbs? I can go on and on. But Bob Arum is the one blocking the Pacquiao fight. Pacquiao needs to agree to Olympic style drug testing ASAP as evidenced by the recent Lamont Peterson doping scandal. Floyd goes somewhere between 5-15 in the all-time list IMO You people need to learn the game

Floyd is the def. top 5 depending on who you like. 43-0 is hard to come by. I see a couple fighters on that list that are over rated. Boxing is not named" fighting" it is "boxing" Scoring points etc. And he is the best ever at the utilizing the sports true meaning. Fighting on the other hand i can name 50 people who are better.

I agree with the posts here, Floyd hasn't given enough to the sport to be considered one of boxing's all time greats. He hasn't fiaced the level of competition that most of them has, and he is afraid to step up and face the biggest threat to his undefeated record. I think most of us will remember him more for the fight that he didn't, more than the fights that he did.

Robinson Ali Johnson Armstrong Duran Armstrong Dempsy Fitzsimmons Pep et al. As good as what Mayweather is, he doesnt hold a candle to the above. These fighters fought whoever was in front of them in brutal, 15 plus round wars. If its Mayweathers 0 that the writer believes makes him 'the greatest', where does he rate Joe Calzaghe, Rocky Marciano, Young Mitchell, Ricardo Lopez and Jimmy Barry who all retired unbeaten?

I AGREE with you ryan whoever wrote this is obviously not a pacman fan at ALL. He also fails to say that MANNY PACQUIAO has AGREED to take the test whenever and at any point in time if they fight. Thats just one of mayweathers excuses still to avoid the fight and obviously his fans (the guy who wrote this article) are stupid enough to believe it cuz he repeats the same stuff over and over.

The fact that you don't know how to spell "Muhammed Ali" was about the 5th clue I had that you have no boxing knowledge whatsoever (fixed, thanks - Eds.). For starters, Sugar Ray Robinson is universally considered in the boxing world as the best p4p fighter of all time. Ali himself is one of those people that rank SRR as #1. You didn't mention Robinson because you most likely never heard of him. To put things in perspective, Ray had 173 victories. To do the math for you, that's 130, yes 130 MORE victories than Floyd Mayweather has. He'd better get to work if he wants to be mentioned with this guy. If you look at this list of fighters that normally rank in the top 10 of all time, they all have one thing in common, they never chickened out of the biggest fights. It takes more than skill or an undefeated record to rank as one of the GOATs. Floyd's legacy will have coward stamped all over it. He has talent, but Manny exposed his lack of balls. Ryan has a clue and I agree with him, Floyd will be somewhere around #27 or #28.

You're clearly not a boxing fan after hearing what you just said. Yeah, this article is a little biased but if you think Cotto gave Mayweather trouble and that Castillo won their first fight, you don't know how to score a boxing match. Cotto was missing 75-80% of his shots while unleashing on Mayweather on the ropes and while the fight was in the middle of the ring Floyd dominated. Also, Castillo walked into Floyd's jab all night and Mayweather beat him easily with one hand out landing Castillo Big Time. Not to mention he was fighting with a messed up shoulder and the second fight he won more convincingly in the eyes of boxing experts. Yes Mosley and Dela Hoya were past their primes and yes maybe even Cotto, although Cotto was coming off the biggest win of his career, but had Bob Arum not been in the picture, fights with guys like Dela Hoya and Cotto would have been made a lot sooner and the fight with Pacquiao would have happened by now. Mayweather would have/will beat Pacquiao and with his undefeated record, beating everyone there is to beat in more than 5 divisions, he will go down in history as an all time great.

what are u talking about?, im a fan of floyds skill but to say he can become the greatest ever is stupid, when its all said and done money may will be ranked some were between the 20-30 mark and nowere near the top 10, and u list some of his oppenents but what u fail to say is ODH was past his prime, sugar shane was way past his prime, castillo BEAT him in the first fight but was robbed, ricky hatton had to move up to a weight he was not compartable at, and lets not forget cotto is not the same fighter he was 5-6 years ago and anyone who watched that fight saw cotto expose a lot a weaknesses is floyds game, like i said im a fan of his skill but he has avoided way to many fighter over the years and most of the big names on his record have been past there prime, so like i said to say he is the greatest is just stupid and shows a lack of boxing knowledge
