Following the end of the Biathlon World and IBU Cup seasons, competitors from around snow-topped parts of the world have had a lay off and are getting back into training. For some national teams this is a little more risky than others.

The Canadian Biathlon team have taken advantage of the early-spring snow cover to get out and shake off the cobwebs with some ski technique training in Canmore Nordic Centre, near Alberta.

Spring training coincides with the end of hibernation for the local population of Black Bear.

The North American Black Bear can tip the scales at over 250 kg and range up to over two metres in height. They also have a reputation for being a bit cranky and have been known to track humans.

In recent days several competitors have had bear encounters while out training in the woods. While no one was threatened or attacked it has put the athletes on notice.

The Canadian team has responded by reminding the team members to be vigilant and to not wear music players while out skiing, biking or roller blading.

Running up a sand dune doesn’t seem so bad now.
