UFC on FX 3: Johnson vs McCall live updates, blog

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

Tournament formats don’t tend to go so well in MMA. Whether fighters get injured, or conflicts with timing and scheduling, there is plenty that can go wrong. Join us as we live blog UFC on FX 3 – headlined by Demetrious Johnson vs Ian McCall.

Just take the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. When it was first announced there was a lot of buzz about it, but after injuries and fights getting put back, it lost its momentum and a lot of interest too.

In the end it took around 18 months to complete, including a substitute for a injured fighter and a broken hand.

The UFC’s inaugural Flyweight tournament isn’t any different. Due to a mix up on the scorecards, Demetrious Johnson was given the win over Ian McCall to advance him to the final to compete with Joseph Benavidez for the Flyweight belt, but it was later revealed that the judges had scored it a majority draw.

Although the UFC have a contingency for such rare occurrences, this mistake wasn’t noticed till hours after the bout, so a scheduled ‘Sudden Death’ fourth-round was unable to take place.

UFC president Dana White wasted no time in annoucing a rematch between Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall, who will take to the cage in the headlining slot at the BankAtlantic Centre in Florida.

In the co-main event slot we see rising Brazilian prospect Erick Silva go up against ‘The Spaniard’ Charlie Brenneman.

Silva, technically coming off a loss, was disqualified by referee Mario Yamasaki at UFC 142 after he was deemed to have made contact with strikes to the back of his opponents head. Replays were shown after which did look as if the call was harsh from the referee, and it was made public that Silva had been given his win bonus for his efforts.

Brenneman shot to glory after stepping up at short notice against Rick Story, winning a lopsided decision victory. But after being pitted against, shall we say, a larger welterweight in Anthony Johnson, Brenneman lost via TKO. Since then The Spaniard has got back to winning with a decision win against Daniel Roberts.

Close fight and Johnson was the right winner this time around. That said, interesting that a judge scored it 30-27 in his favour.

It's a hard one, the first fight was so close. McCall might get up in this one.

Eddie really needed that win, given he's had a bad run of late. Hope he gains his momentum back and we see him fighting at the top for a while!
