New A-League club to be named on Monday

Western Sydney chairman Lyall Gorman says the new A-League club will unveil their name, logo and colours on Monday – but it seems fans are sick of waiting.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) announced the 2012/13 A-League draw on Tuesday, with the inaugural Sydney derby scheduled for October 20 at a venue `To Be Advised’.

While Gorman posted a note on the A-League website suggesting fans will know more about western Sydney’s identity on Monday – there were no guarantees about the whereabouts of their home ground.

“Many fans have asked why we have taken our time in announcing the official club name, logo, colours and home venue,” Gorman wrote.

“The major reason for that is that as with any new business, especially as one as important as this one is to everyone, the early key decisions of a business are critical for its successful future and time simply must be taken to get them right.

“Since the new club representing western Sydney was announced on the 4th April, we have been working feverishly behind the scenes to build the club from the ground up.

“It gives me great pleasure to confirm that the official club name, club logo and club colours will be formally announced next Monday.”

According to Sportsnewsfirst.com.au preview of the first Sydney derby posted on the A-League’s website carried the title `Western Sydney Wanderers’ – but it was promptly removed.

Lyall insisted the club hadn’t been dormant since signing Tony Popovic as coach on May 17.

“I am pleased to say that Tony is well advanced with a number of players agreeing to join the club with their official announcements to be made in the very near future,” he posted.

To coincide with the release of the A-League draw, FFA used Twitter to give fans a chance to post questions about the fixture list by using the hashtag #AskALeague.

It backfired in a similar fashion to Qantas’s #QantasLuxury campaign, with much of the attention focused on the uncertainty concerning western Sydney.

“How do I get to TBA Stadium,” posted Chris Hockman, while Tom B wondered “Why didn’t you wait for when @NewSydneyClub had an actual home ground and crest before releasing the draw?”

Steve Hewlett was more forthright: “@NewSydneyClub Oh Jesus, Mary and Joseph, seriously, who’s running your marketing strategy? Alan Joyce? The head of Fairfax??”

Why is SFC close to insolvency? I didn't think Traktovenko was having any trouble paying his bill, CCM on the other hand......and a team that is 100% owned by the FFA shouldn't be getting too cocky. It's all good and well to proclaim yourself Australia's biggest club and start bagging out the club and fans who have supported the league from day one but how about we wait and see how you go first.

Last time an Old firm club got involved in football down under it didn't end well, RFC basically nailed Northern Spirit to a pole:( IIRC the ALF were thinking of going with GWS Celtic instead of the Giants to cash in on their link with the GAA in the International Rules Series.

I was hoping they were called West Sydney Celtic and wore green and white hoops.Their main local rivals Sydney FC are close to insolvency so it would be a nice fit.Im a RL fan but this is way overdue and will keep me interested in the off season It is the main male participant sport in the region and will work if managed well (GWS is AFL arrogance and $$$ together with the insular inferior product that will eventually be its demise) Parra stadium will work well and provide good sightlines and atmosphere Red and black mmmm I would have went with Black Gold Blue the school representaive colours of the region ( they also tie up Penrith Parra Wests your 3 main RL clubs) Anyway goodluck . Not being a wog I finally have a local Australian soccer club I can identify with

My read of the WS forums is most will be happy with Wanderers and would have accepted Athletic as an alternative, but the name passes its first test IMO if it doesn’t cause any particular potential supporter group to immediately think ”screw that! I’m not supporting a team called xx” I think either Wanderers or Athletic will be considered inclusive by WS's football tribes and we will see a large cross section of Western Sydney’s many cultural groups represented in its home crowds. I like that the HAL clubs each have pet names for each other. Some are for polite company and some obviously aren’t, but I would be surprised if the WS fans don’t attempt to at least own the insult and turn the Unicorns into a badge of honour in the same way fans of my team doesn’t shy away from the term pissants :) or even Barrel boys:) we all come from Snowtown!!! PS: as an avid HAL fan I too am looking forward to the announcement. I feel that with 2 teams in each of our 2 biggest cities we are finally placed where we should have been from day dot to reach our potential as a football league and I expect that WSFC will be a large part of the step up to the next level off the field. Exciting times are ahead for domestic football in this country.

Looking forward to the announcement on Monday. I like the Wanderers name, although I do hope the joke nickname of the Unicorns continues as an unofficial name.

It is lazy journalism, why do we expect anything else regarding football in this country? I am lurking at westernsydneyfootball.com forums and am yet to read a post by a potential WS fan displaying overt annoyance at not finding out the name, logo, colours/stadium of their team last Tuesday. Most completely understand the strategy of giving the fixture release its own day and going for a separate splash next Monday. They have waited almost 8 years for their own HAL team, most are not overly fussed about another 6 days. I think it highly encouraging the size of the online WS community already and it points to a positive direction for the League IMO that they are already so organised and have a decent number of fans before a ball has even been kicked in anger.

"It backfired in a similar fashion to Qantas’s #QantasLuxury campaign, with much of the attention focused on the uncertainty concerning western Sydney." What a load of crap. Inaccurate reporting. Great initiative by FFA. They should be congratulated. At least they answered the question that was repetitively asked about Western Sydney, and a satisfactory answer at that.

I think we are reading off the same song sheet Minister, I get conerned when its the FFA though as oftentimes they do not have the excess $$ in reserve to be able to turn down the $$ on offer from places like ANZ - which is why they accept offers from Events NSW/VIC to 'pimp' out the Socceroos effectively hoarding them for whichever State govts will shell out the $$ to underwrite costs. As A SAlian or a WAlian I would be concerned at the infrequent times I get to see my country play live in meaningful WC Qualifiers:( due to those state govts not shelling out any money. I think in this case it appears they might just have done the right thing and if so they are to be congratulated. It will leave a legacy and help create a wonderful atmosphere for the new team. I personally cant wait to play away there in December.

Yes Kasey. We're on the same wavelength. Let me give you an example of a famous club in Europe doing the same. In the country of my birth ,Austria, we have a very famous club called Rapid Vienna. It is by far and away the best supported club in Vienna and Austria as a whole. They play at the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium (compact, rectangular and a scary place to visit) which currently holds 17 500. This stadium is regularly sold out even when the team is not doing so well. Rapid has the option of playing their matches down the road at the Ernst Happel Stadium (Austrian national team's arena, 52 000 capacity and an oval. They know they could average crowds of 25 000 there and if marketed a little more astutely they could sell it out for the famous derby against Austria Vienna. But they refuse to even contemplate going there because it could not possibly generate anything like the unique atmosphere at the Hanappi and of course there's the tradition involved. Principles before $$$$ people!! I love it.

From today's SMH: THE new western Sydney team will officially come to life with a derby against the Central Coast Mariners on October 6, two weeks before the most awaited match of the season - the first Sydney derby against Sydney FC. While Football Federation Australia was previously eager to shoe-horn matches such as these into the heavily subsidised ANZ Stadium, it's now believed the governing body would rather create a more intense atmosphere at Parramatta Stadium. This is the venue where western Sydney, who will unveil their name, logo and colours next Monday, are expected to play most of their matches. Dare we dream that the FFA have listened to the fans?

Parra stadium is the perfect choice. Rectangular, compact and good viewing from all parts of the ground. I've been there for a couple of Socceroo matches in the past and SFC vs the Indonesian team in the ACL a few years ago. I haven't seen it at capacity but the atmosphere was pretty good then and I would imagine the place would rock with a full house for a Sydney derby.

Indications from Tom Smithies at the Daily Tele(who’d have thought we’d trust that news source over SBS one day for football news – but he has thus far been spot on with his information regarding WSFC) where as SBS have been so far off base it is just sad. Are that ANZ will not be involved at all in WS’s inaugural season. I guess that leaves Parramatta Stadium, which should be a fortress when close to capacity as I imagine it will be. In fact any more than 13k in there should be intimidating and generate a cracking atmosphere.

Red & Black makes sense Sydney FC already play in Light Blue and there are a lot of great world sides in red black - Man U & Milan in particular. I hope all games are at Parramatta. The FFA should remember the Victory started playing all their games at the 15,000 Olympic Park. A small ground would also be another differential to the empty stands which Sydney FC play in front of.

Minister i hope your right as this city with its massive football fan base has yet to embrace the A-league.

West Sydney will be a massive success striker. In fact it will blow people away. All the football fans outside of Sydney who sometimes questioned the passion of supporters of our game because Sydney FC got ordinary attendances for such a big city will get a real eye-opener about how it works in Sydney.
