BROWNIE: How NSW can give the Maroons the Blues

By Nathan Brown / Expert

I’ve been singing Ricky Stuart’s praises in my columns of late, and plenty of readers have given me stick about it. But after watching the Blues win State of Origin two, I have to say again, he is by far the best choice for NSW.

He just understands what Origin is all about. And he learned the secret from Gus Gould why certain players should be picked and other players shouldn’t.

It’s all about picking a team to beat Queensland, not necessarily selecting the 13 most talented players available.

Queensland are certainly in the box seat in terms of star player depth. They have superstars all over the field, which makes Ricky and his team’s efforts in Game 2 an even more outstanding result – both for NSW and the game of rugby league itself.

Origin lends itself to a particular type of player, especially on a mental level.

The fans out there might wonder why a certain player has missed selection, but the truth is that there are some guys who would play great for their country and their club, but might not be mentally strong enough for Origin or be able to sustain the intensity required.

There is very little room for error in Origin. And it took NSW a long time to work out how best to select a side to do the job.

Ricky’s advantage is that he played Origin himself at a time when NSW won a number of series’ against Queensland.

Gus coached Ricky, and now Ricky is marking his own mark on Blues State of Origin history.

The decider will no doubt be a brutal encounter.

The key for both sides will be to get themselves up to that same level intensity that they showed in the previous matches.

Glenn Stewart will be a big loss for the Blues, but Queensland may lose a coupe of players too.

It’ll be a tough ask for NSW.

But they’ve proven in last few games that if they can do the small things well, they can then use their smaller, quicker forwards to run Queensland around.

Former Dragons coach and player Nathan Brown writes an exclusive weekly column for The Roar. Brown, who played 172 games for the Dragons and coached them for a further 142 games, is currently the head coach at the Huddersfield Giants in the UK Super League.

Sorry if you are upset with my comments which are not intended to offend. You are on the forum therefore open to comments being made whether agreed or disagreed. You opened yourself when you had to be sarcastic in having a go about the naysayers and arm chair experts, who also are entitled to comment!

How the hell is that a contradiction Charles. The reason the combinations aren't working and the players are feeling the heat IS BECAUSE THE PRESSURE NSW ARE PUTTING ON THEM which can be attributed to Ricky's selections and coaching. Please mate, I used to find you amusing but just don't bother anymore ok. I'm trying to get behind my state and team, your just trying to prove your points..

Another contradiction in terms Mac! On one hand you are praising Ricky Stuart coaching record as a great achievement and another you are saying QLD are down on their knees with their playing roster and combinations. The fact is QLD as you rightly pointed out, do show cracks in their team roster and also have not played their best this year. In the meanwhile NSW are finally starting to formulate a team that is at least, are more competitive then what we have had in the past. On that basis QLD vulnerability is there for the taking in a NSW win and not that Ricky Stuart is some sort of coaching guru!

The crowd in Sydney got the roaches home. Their defence was QLD like. Can't see it happening at Suncorp, especially with Greggy bringing it back.

What a farce oikee.... if QLD get another two home games next year - like they did last year, when NSW have not had two home games then it shows even more how biased Origin administrators are toward handing QLD victories.... how do you know they are having 2 games in QLD in 2013??? it seems you must be a QRL executive with all your inside info. on the QLD team and when 2013 grounds for origin have yet to be finalised and confirmed!!!

Lol. I know. I know! Haha But i just think when nsw got a move on with some speed in game one and two, they really had qlds mettle. It was an arm wrestle before that though. I just see them breaking away. All comes back to what Nathan brown said. So i bet I'm not the only one hoping nsw play such a thing again, out made for a good game with everything, and they just might win. And sure i probably need to sit in the corner for a while... I have been to suncorp often. I had a centre line pass for a long while but i have also sat everywhere, including paying for finals on the side. I went to the first game with my mum! we sat in the corner up the back. You can see me in the paper picture. Dad didn't want to go. Love the place Only been to origin at old lp. drawn game wad the last. I can't do mid week on account of my kids

Mate, sit back and enjoy the true beauty of a origin crowd, (you ever been to Suncorp), it will rock you sideways my friend, it will leave you in awe of the sheer Poetry, the orchestra of the crowd and the Symphony of the flow of origin, it is a beauty unmatched in World sport to have such passion flowing in motion with game time, crowd time. Turn up the volume son, Queensland, we coming to get ya. Nobody does world stage as good as Queenslanders. You still their Nathan, ? you know what i mean.

Nathan of course you know a thing or two and i hope to see the blues get home. I am from qld but they have been trying so hard to nail it down. So if they win it will be just in my eyes. So much so they hold a soft spot for me. Cough go blues

:) They all love it, they love to see Queensland on the ropes, calling our boys old, hasbeens and yet, come crunch time, we always seem to lift. I am asking our boys to lift one more time, yes the record is getting old, but lift, lift boys. Someone mentioned above about Dave Taylor, ? Dont get the hulk angry, you wont like the hulk if he gets angry. Should be a ripper game.

After NSW bash QLD again and take out the series at Suncorp (no better place to do it) Ricky will have a record of 2 from 3 series wins as a SOO coach with a winning percentage of around 56%. Of course there will be the usual naysayers and arm chair experts who will claim they could have selected a better team or that QLD were robbed (the most predictable part of all) but none of that will matter. Slater has been hammered all series and hopefully he's right for game three from a NSW perspective. Thurston looks lost at 5/8 and his combination with Cronk beginning with the Anzac test has been crap to say the least. Add to that the fact that Petro's past it, Dave Taylor's out of his depth in the starting line up and Hodges looks about 5 years past his best, things are looking good for NSW.

You really must be joking Nathan, give us a break! NSW has been in dire straits for far too long and it has been frustrating for the fans. It is only now that we look like getting a decent team together. NSW has many fine players to choose from and yet we have struggled to find the right players and in their right positions. Ricky Stuart has dithered and dathered, clearly demonstrating he has no idea and luckily, he has stumbled on forming a better team which in some areas has been forced through injury. I also question his coaching ability?

I take it, you're tipping a QLD win, oikee?? There's nothing left in Petero's tank. Slater has been suspect, esp under the high ball. Morris is doing a good job on GI and will be even better this time. Hodges might as well be sitting in the stands. Taylor looks like a Jurrasic Park extra. It all points to one result. Blues by 6.

I will reserve judgement on the greatness of Ricky and the Blues until full time of game 3. I seem to recall being in a similar position last year and having our pants pulled down.

Nathan, that is very nice to hear mate, and i am hoping we will hear from you again, singing Ricky's praises after he loses another Origin series this year. And next year, i hope we also see Ricky again, same old same old, Ricky sproting his "i am the Messieh" follow me to the valley of death. I say this because Big Mal already has him covered, he will not come out and let NSW bully us like they did last game, he will be talking to Harrigon, and for the love of god he had better not change the rules to allow for video replays of fowel play, because fowel play is what NSW are going to get mate. the gloves are off son, your on our turf now, your on our graveyard where NSW blues have been burried for the last 6 years. We will prevail, we wont take second best, defeat is not a option. Big Mal is fully loaded Nathan, now its time to sit back and enjoy what Suncorp and 53 thousand mad raving Lunitickle Queenslanders will give your band of Merry men. MR nice guy is staying at home, time for payback. Enjoy. p.s, next year Queensland has the 2 home games, just getting you warmed up mate. I have already booked my holiday this year. The baseball bats have already had a polish with a state election, might as well get some extra use out of them, bring on the blues , nite nite princess.
