Why Inglis will be the 2012 Dally M Medalist

By Ryan Selvage / Roar Guru

Cooper Cronk leads the race for the 2012 Dally M medal after 16 rounds, with 19 points. Matt Bowen, Johnathan Thurston and Billy Slater are just two points in arrears on 17.

However, it is South Sydney fullback Greg Inglis who is tipped by many to take the title. Inglis surrenders a three point lead to Cronk heading into the final third of the competition, many experts suggesting that Inglis will add yet another accolade to his already illustrious career.

Inglis will miss this weeks clash with the Penrith Panthers due to Origin duty.

However, if he makes it through the Origin decider unscathed, the flyer will be buoyed to continue his recent run of form at club level. South Sydney will play six of their remaining eight games against teams currently positioned outside of the top 8. If they are to win these matches, Inglis will assumably play a major role.

In 13 appearances this year, G.I has scored seven tries, racking up 1787 running metres in the process. Alongside Ben Barba, Inglis has broken the line more than any other player, highlighting his successful switch from centre to fullback.

The Kempsey-born Queensland star has also proved his abilities to single-handedly win club matches in 2012. Inglis demonstrated such talents in round five, kicking a field goal in extra time to defeat the Wests Tigers.

Inglis has also shown composure and skill in big game situations, claiming the Clive Churchill medal for best on ground in the 2007 NRL grand final as well as consistently putting in big performances at Origin level. Such attributes will hold the flyer in good stead come the concluding matches of the 2012 season.

Cronk has to compete with Slater and captain Cameron Smith for the Dally M points in each game, meaning Inglis will have a better shot of picking up something each week.

If I was a betting man, I would put my money on Inglis for the 2012 Dally M.

Well Josh I say he is lazy, because I observed his on field performances and demeanour at the Melbourne Storm and he has a flagmatic approach to his game and his life ... He was not always as committed to training, teamsmanship and structural plays as Smith, Slater and Cronk, as is why that when he tossed in his purple jersey, the gap he opened when he left has been so easily filled ... During Greg;s stint with the Storm, it was apparent that he was used as a try scoring tool rather then someone who could be relied on to set up plays and use his own initiative to come up with something that took nous and know how ... But, he is 4 years younger then his three good mates and that the age of maturity in all young people is 23 ... Smith, Slater and Cronk where instrumental in making sure that his natural talent for speed and strength where utilized to the maximum and GI is only starting to get a grasp of what he should be displaying as far as performance for a team, rather then just for himself and how to give everything you;ve got not only consistently but for 100% for 80 minutes - He still struggles with that and he knows it, but perhaps that's just his nature ... This was apparent in his first year at Souths where he deflated quite quickly and loss fitness ... He struggled without the structural play he was used to at the Storm and his mates went on to win their perspective Dally M's ... Since been given the #1 role at Souths he has set out to prove he is capable in that position, but he doesn't have what Billy Slater has and he isn't alone with that ... And, everyone who knows anything about rugby league or Billy Slater don't have to explain their opinons on that ... Just wait for Wednesday night if the scores are tied in the last minute and see if Queensland can pull a rabbit out of the hole with Billy Slater sitting on the sideline ...

Tony, You may have forgotten 2011, when the three Melbourne Storm players, Smith, Slater and Cronk where vying for the Dally M Player of the Year with only Benji Marshall and Johnathan Thurston having a chance of stopping Billy Slater scoring the most points and the prize ... All three Melbourne Storm players where awarded the Dally M for their perspective positions and are the very best of mates on and off the field as is why there will be a fair hole in the Maroon's team on Wednesday night without Slater running off his mates including still being good friends with GI ... Greg Inglis said today, that he is pleased Billy has left the door open for him to take his place at fullback for the Maroons, but he also realizes he will now have to work for the whole 80 minutes, instead of the 10 minutes he usually performs ... Greg Inglis is instinctively lazy and seems to pop up when there are set plays, although this year he has played a lot more proactive, then reactive ... Try scoring players usually rate highly in the allocation of the 1, 2, and 3 Dally M points ...

I think Inglis will finish very close to the top. The Melbourne Storm players will shoot each other in the arm with Cronk Slater and Smith jostling each other for the maximum points in each game. I would love to see Paul Gallen break through and win the award as a forward but i don't believe the sharks will win effort games for him to take the title. Ben Barba is a hot tip for the prize- I only see injury standing in his and Inglis' way. If the tigers go on another hot run don't be surprised if Marshall comes home with a quick flurry of threes a la Jarryd Hayne in 2009.

I don't know about everyone else, but, my guess it's a little bit early to call ... Just read that the money is on Ben Barba, and he could very well have earned enough respect to be considered, although, I really do detest the media adulation of any sportsman - It's not good for them professionally or personably ie Hayne and Carney - Some young men believe everything they read ... A rugby league season is long and arduous, with injuries playing a major part for a player to fall off the Dally M podium, goodness knows how many points Billy Slater has forgone, before his mid-season injury crisis ... Unfortunately for representative players they lose the right to earn Dally M points whilst representing their state or country and that includes a number of players vying for Dally M points table in 2012 ... I just wish the media would stop second guessing and at least have their so called experts add a little perspective into their opinions ... So, rselvage7 thankfully you aren't a betting man, and, you possibly have jumped in far too early ... I'd still like to watch the next 10 rounds, before I decide ... Dally M's have very few point between contenders and already Billy Slater, last years winner, may have slipped out of contention ... However, being an optimist I've got everything crossed he'll recover to well and truly threaten the other Dally M hopefuls ...

he will be lucky to stay on the field long enough to gather the points. A perennial injury prone media darling.
