State of Origin 2012 Game 3: Key moments of the game

By The Roar / Editor

These are the key moments of State of Origin 2012 Game 3, won by the Queensland Maroons 21 – 20 in a nail-biter at Suncorp Stadium.

First Half

Queensland (QLD) kick-off and Tim Grant takes the ball up for New South Wales and is hammered by the Maroons.

1′ BIFF! Brent Tate takes the ball up and Paul Gallen hits him. There’s some facial work and the replays show some punches – but Gallen throws the first punch and is penalised. The replays also show Brent Tate throwing some cheap shots, nasty.

5′ Brett Morris goes straight through! Flimsy defence from Sam Thaiday, he makes 60m on the burst and beats the fullback Inglis but is finally run down from behind. Queensland are all offside and it’s a PENALTY. NSW have a quick talk about it but the ball goes to Todd Carney to kick for goal.

He kicks it straight and NSW take the early lead! QLD: 0 – NSW: 2. Listen to the penalty and goal here.

12′ TRY NSW! Brett Morris looks to have scored for the Blues! NSW has a repeat set after making some yards up the middle and NSW throw it around. QLD get a touch and it’s six again. The Blues attack the line and some good quick work from the play the ball sets up Brett Morris who charges over the line. Thaiday tries to hold him up but it looks to be down. The video referee agrees and NSW score!

Carney slots the conversion. QLD: 0 – NSW: 8. Listen to the try and conversion here.

19′ TRY QLD! NSW are penalised and QLD have a set of six on the attack. They hit the line well to get right on the line, Corey Parker takes a hit up and gets an offload, Thurston spreads it wide to Darrius Boyd who has just enough space to get the ball down with Jarryd Hayne defending. No need for the video ref, Boyd scores again at Origin level.

Johnathan Thurston attempts the conversion but he pulls it too far on the left and it misses. QLD 4 – NSW 8. Listen to the try and conversion here.

32′ TRY QLD! Thurston throws a dummy and goes straight through! The NSW defence scrambles but QLD have huge numbers and they’re outnumbered. Finally the ball comes back to Thurston who dives over and it’s a try!

He converts his own try and the Maroons are ahead. QLD 10 – NSW 8. Listen to the try and conversion here.

34′ TRY QLD! NSW kick-off and it goes out on the full! Penalty to QLD who have a set of six on the attack and there are gaps everywhere. Justin Hodges crabs across the field sideways and there’s a hint of a shepherd but he dives over practically untouched! The video ref has a look at any defence interfered with, and it looks like Robbie Farah may have committed to a dummy runner but it’s all clear! Try to QLD!

Thurston converts a simple kick in front and Queensland are ahead! QLD 16 – NSW 8. Listen to the try and conversion here.

40′ Cameron Smith for Queensland tries a field-goal right before the break but it’s way off and that’s half-time.

> Listen to the half-time highlights here.

Second-Half

47′ TRY NSW! Brett Stewart flies onto a Robbie Farah grubber and he grabs the ball untouched to plant it for NSW! The video referee has a look but there’s no problems and its a try. Game on!

Carney converts an easy one from in front. QLD 16 – NSW 14/ Listen to the try and conversion here.

51′ PENALTY There’s a penalty to QLD in front and the Maroons elect to take the points. Thurston hits an easy one over the black dot and QLD move to four points in front. QLD 18 – NSW 14.

55′ TRY SAVED! Cameron Smith runs straight through and finds Greg Inglis on the burst and it looks to be a certain try but Josh Morris manages to make a try saving tackle on GI to bring him down just before the line and he runs into the upright and can’t get the ball down. Thurston was celebrating prematurely but it’s not a try yet. NSW are all over Inglis as he tries to play it quickly but Thurston fumbles a pass and NSW are able to jump on the ball. QLD 18 – NSW 14

62′ PENALTY. Tony Williams leaves his arm dangling out and attempts to take off Cooper Cronk’s head, on the back of two penalties to QLD. It’s an accident as Cronk fell into it but the contact with the head is never allowed. Penalties are 6-3 to the Maroons. Thurston can kick this easily and he does so – the lead goes out to six points. QLD 20 – NSW 14.

69′ TRY!. The Blues make a break down the right side and Hayne manages to slip a beautiful pass inside and NSW make a break and are on the attack! Mitchell Pearce is tackled and there’s a loss of momentum but Robbie Farah puts the ball up and over and Josh Morris somehow leaps over Boyd to take the ball over his head, bring it back and plant it! The video ref has a look but Morris has scored an amazing try in the right-corner. QLD 20 – NSW 18 – kick to come.

Carney has the kick to convert and level the scores. It’s from way out and he’s struggled all series. He lines it up and slots it! It’s 20-all! QLD 20 – NSW 20. Listen to the incredible try here

75′ KEY MOMENT OF THE GAME :: FIELD GOAL! Cronk from 40m out takes a shot at a field goal and absolutely nails it. It’s a pearler of a drop kick – banging it through to give Queensland the one point lead. QLD 21 – NSW 20.

77′ New South Wales on the attack and get to within 35m of the QLD line but Robbie Farah tries to play the ball and fumbles it! Disaster for NSW. Still QLD by one.

79′ NSW take the ball up to within 45m out on the last, Peace goes for field goal but he’s a long way out and he can’t get it close.

Queensland have won the 2012 State of Origin series, their seventh win in a row

Best series in 10 years, game 3 was the best game that I have seen. NSW had a young sqaud, Carney is the man for them he just needs time...need we be reminded of Hodges first origin game?? All this rubbishing of the refs is BS, it's origin, it's controversial and always has been, from a QLD point of view, we have typically been on the receiving end of a few shockers too so GET OVER IT! NSW fans need to have a look at themselves, bad mouthing the players that do the hard yards on the field for YOU and your state...shameful. RIcky Stuart can't say he wants to "build" a team and then have second thoughts because they lost. That's been the problem for them over the past 7 years, they lose so they change. Someone said that QLD are "cheats" because a few of their players are in the same NRL teams.....so I guess that Glenn and Brett Stuart are cheats, along with Watmough and T-Rex....in fact the biggest combination for NRL/Origin in the QLD is the Cronk/Slater/Smith combo which is three and yet Manly have 4 origin reps in their team so.... is it only QLD? Honestly, stop making excuses! Have a close look at the game....it came down to ONE point!!! People seem to have an issue with the Hodges try...ok exclude that from our tally and we lose by 6?? OR wait, there is an issue that seems to have be completely over looked...Inglis came close to scoring, he wanted a quick play the ball as NSW were scattered...had he got that quick play the ball we score and more than likely Thurston converts.....BUT we do NOT get the quick play the ball because Hayne basically rapes Inglis's leg into the in goal, intentionally slowing the play the ball, this is a professional foul and therefore should be a sin bin.....what's that? No penalty? No sin bin? Where is the news article on this? That penalty didn't even get a mention on the night, but hey it evened out Hodges try right? Calls were shotty for BOTH teams, but I guess it's easier to swallow them when your team won....again....for the seventh series in a row....The NSW fans and media need to stop trying to find hollow excuses to hide behind and just SUPPORT their team! You've heard of QLD spirit? Maybe you need to adopt some and start believing....NSW media, instead of saying "NSW, lost again, Pierce's last game??" etc..maybe just say, damn fine effort NSW, you almost beat the BEST team that football has EVER seen! Sorry to ramble, but excuses are for sore losers, acceptance is for gracious losers..come on guys, no one likes poor sport! Can't wait for next year, let's go for 8 QLD!!!

NSW's biggest weakness was their last tackle options. They regularly put the ball down the throat of Inglis, Tate and Boyd. They were lucky to only lose by a point, but they deserved a close result as they've played well all series. It's a pity they saved their worst for last.

We all have our own opinion of that great game lastnight, i dont want to single players out, but what does Williams think he will achieve by trying to push players out of his way, it might work in club games, but not at this level, thats all i saw him do and he got no where only lost ground, beats me. I stated in an ealier blog that NSW wont beat Qld if they continue to throw the ball to players standing stil or who have to jump in the air to receive it, it does not work unless you are miles away from the other team, all you do is let the defenders gain ground on you and that is what happened on alot of sets lastnight. You have got to make the most out of the set of six and they were not making the metres that they should have, anyway that is their style so it will continue i guess. Dont want to belt the ref, but Qld threw half a dozen forward passes lastnight and the game rolled on, NSW threw one forward pass and were pinged for it. If a forward pass is not allowed and it says so in the rule book, then rule on all forward passes or piss the rule off out of the book, along with a few other rules that are overlooked, ??????

Can't believe some of you here are bagging Gallen. Hes our best and doesn't have a massive amount of ego unlike Farah. Creagh should never sniff the jersey again. Tariq Sims, Mateo should make the squad next year, 1.Stewart 2.Uate(if he doesnt perform Brett Morris) 3.Josh Morris 4.Jennings 5.Hayne 6.Soward 7.Wallace(if injured Pearce) 8.Grant 9.Farah 10.Tamou 11.Sims 12.Glenn Stewart 13.Bird 14.Lewis 15.Mateo 16.Watmough 17.Williams If Sonny Bill goes to Roosters pick him.

Agree on the captain issue ... make Farrah THE CAPTAIN, he is more discipline than Gallen. Good comment

Agree Mate, I think it's time to blood those young forwards you mentioned next year and drop those same players like Lewis, watmough, stewart scott, creagh and Gallen. NSW need a new captain that can inspire his troops by being disciplined and not by being grubby. 2014 for the Blues IF THEY SORT YOUR ADVICE. QLDER.

Nate Miles is a Grub, He deliberatley drove his head into farrar at the start of the game. Why wasnt Hodges Penalised for the high shot on Williams ? Williams got penalised for hitting Cronk as he Fell, why wasnt Hannant penalised for hitting creagh in the head when he got injured ? RL has become a joke, I can live with a couple errors but the inconsistency is destroying my enjoyment of the game, I played footy from u/12' till i was 23 and running behind a players back has always been considered a sheperd. Even in back yard footy it has never been allowed.

'Great game' you forgot to add by Queensland. NSW was unimaginative & relies on kicks & just taking the ball forward. Boring game.

Perhaps you should listen to the referees and not the one eyed Blues commentators in future. In saying that I hope it's the last origin nine gets to broadcast. Come on commissioners, put them on the expired pile along with the McIntyre system and David Gallop.

The scoreline was close but the contest was not. There was one team playing Rugby League, the other team hanging n there.

Sad to think you were tricked into watching origin, don't let it happen again. In fact crawl back under your rock and take that giant chip on your shoulder with you. The big bad world won't get you there!

A person does not need to be a world class player in order to comment on the skills of a professional player. I don't need to be a professional player in order to know a thing or two about rugby league. Not all coaches and tacticians are ex-players. Not all ex-players make good coaches and tactcians. Not all people who love rugby league want to be a professional player. Ever thought about that? I think you're just bitter because your state lost. Again. For the seventh time in a row.

That about sums it up. Great game. Cronk's field goal was pretty special, as was Carney's sideline conversion to level the scores. Great stuff under pressure. Robbie Farah showed a lot of spark, but also made a fool of himself when trying to shift the blame for his knock on and trying to claim an obstruction with Ben Hannant running behind him. Queensland just too good, but the gap is closing. Get us a half decent halfback and we're a chance next year.
