Former Tasmania paceman Ali De Winter has been named as Cricket Australia’s new bowling coach, replacing Craig McDermott who left the role in May.
De Winter, 44, has been credited with rejuvenating the Test career of swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus.
The Tasmania assistant coach was also head coach of the Hobart Hurricanes in last summer’s Big Bash League Twenty20 competition.
Pakistan pace great Waqar Younis was another candidate, announcing last week that he was unsuccessful.
CA team performance general manager Pat Howard said De Winter beat a wide field of international candidates.
“Ali presented well on how he would manage the role on a day-to-day basis and has impressed through his work with bowlers such as Ben Hilfenhaus and Jackson Bird in Tasmania, and while he was the interim bowling coach on the recent (one-day) tour to England,” Howard said on Friday.
“We feel Ali has skills that will complement those of (head coach) Mickey Arthur, (assistants) Justin Langer and Steve Rixon and is well equipped to pick up on Craig McDermott’s previous good work.”
De Winter says he’s determined to keep a simple game plan.
“I don’t think it is too complicated,” he said.
“It’s about having a strong work ethic, building good relationships and doing things like attacking the top of off stump in Test cricket.
“I am particularly excited to get this chance, particularly now as Australia has such a deep pool of fast bowling talent with 10-12 young bowlers featuring at the moment.”

With all these 'specialist' coaches filling the change-room I just can't figure out how we used to win Test matches pre-1990 - yeah, I know the 1980's weren't much chop, but before then we won plenty.

The de Winter jury will be under witness protection for a while, He was a good club cricketer, who infiltrated the 'Northern Club', that runs the Tasmanian Cricket Engine Room. (Ex Launceston that is a passport to a job in Cricket Tas somewhere) Seriously though, good luck to Alli for pursuing this opportunity, The issue he will have, as I see it, will be getting the attention of the Cummins's, Pattinson's, etc, who would all have their state based mentors,coaches, This is the issue I have with all these 'specialist' coaching people with the National Team.

Hope de Winter does well. He's vertainly done well with Jackson Bird and of course Hilfy. I never thought Billy the Kid had much between the ears, but geez he did well with them. Let's see about this one. We just need to remove the coach and captain from the selection panel. I'm disappointed with what a sycophant Mickey Arthur's been.
