GWS Giants vs Port Adelaide: AFL live scores

By The Roar / Editor

The GWS Giants celebrate the 1000th game for Kevin Sheedy as a player and coach as Port Adelaide come to town. We’ll have live scores from 2.10pm AEST.

The coaching icon has been the focus of the build-up to this clash, with his remarkable playing and coaching career being re-explored.

He’s the first person to reach the 1000-game milestone.

Can the occasion be topped off with a win? Well, there’s no doubting that playing at home against another lowly-ranked team is something of an opportunity for the Giants.

However, Port Adelaide – while certainly inconsistent – have showed promising signs at times this season and will be hungry to register their sixth win of the season.

It was a tough weekend for the Giants a week ago, going down to Collingwood by 120 points in front of just 8,102 spectators.

Adam Treloar deservedly earned a Rising Star nomination for his 37 touches and nine marks. Toby Greene had 35 disposals and Devon Smith registered three goals.

Port Adelaide hosted Fremantle but weren’t able to get the job done, going down by 27 points. Kane Cornes had 31 disposals, while Travis Boak and Dom Cassisi were also among the best.

The Giants have made five changes, while Port lose Troy Chaplin and Darren Pfeiffer yet gain Hamish Hartlett and Jay Shulz.

Kasey your opinions are always welcome, and consistent.

Why is my opinion flawed, because I don’t say the same as everybody else or toe the company(AFL) line? I asked a simple question. If you can’t even get my username correct it makes me wonder what other hoes you have in your arguments. Luckily thanks to the SANFL a South Australian can be a footy fan without swallowing the official AFL company line.

Yes, Kacey has a habit of posting highly flawed opinions on the Australian Football League board.

"has anybody actually researched the Adelaide market to accurately determine if the city can sustain 2 successful AFL teams?" In 2011 (annus horribilis), Port had over 36,000 paid-up members and averaged over 23,000 to every home game. Same year Adelaide had over 45,000 members and averaged over 35,000 per home game. I think Adelaide can sustain 2 teams.

Of course Adelaide can support 2 AFL teams, it supports a local stronger league than the West, (arguable) but i think it is, so the underpinning structure is there. Port will bounce back, and if it happens to not, another team will take it's place.

Adelaide can support 2 AFL teams. Whether one of those AFL teams continues to be the Power remains to be seen...

It will be an unpopular opinion, but has anybody actually researched the Adelaide market to accurately determine if the city can sustain 2 successful AFL teams? I regularly hear the half a million population figure roughly equals an AFL team figure thrown about, but Adelaide is for all intents and purposes a rusted on footy city, it’s certainly no Western Sydney in having to have the culture/ rules of the game explained to them. Perth has 2 teams, but Perth is the HQ for the fast lane in our 2-speed national economy. Perth also followed a slightly different model. A composite team (WCE and a second smaller composite team in Fremantle) The Cattery has attempted to dig deeper in a previous article about just why Port could have been doomed from the start given their baggage as SA Footy’s most hated club. So the question remains: Can Adelaide Support 2 successful AFL franchises. It seems a lot of this is a gamble on the Adelaide Oval being a magic pot of gold for the Alberton mob. I don’t see it happening. I foresee the Adelaide crowds will flock to the central location and just like footy park before it, the Power faithful will start to get resentful of the “crows taking over” and then there will be yet another reason for Port fans not to get out and watch their team.

Port Adelaide Football Club. 1870 - 2012. R. I. P. The beginning of the end. AFL will eventually rebrand the club. Carn the South Coast Power!

It may have been live into Sydney however I would assume TV numbers wouldn't be overly great

Theres a big big sound from the West of the Town. When I left the ground 20 minutes ago, the GWS players were still signing autographs. They let everyone on the ground for kick to kick, and it was a sea of kids. In 20 years, those kids will be bringing their kids to watch the Giants.

perhaps they should have double headers at homebush between the two stadiums for when port fremantle and suns play and have swans vs one of the big melb clubs. keep in mind the stadiums are within spitting distance of each other

Well, considering they got only a bit over 8k for Collingwood last week, it wasn't too bad. Me thinks Pies supporters were saving their dough for the Swans match @ ANZ next week. That should be a good crowd provided OK weather.

The 6,800 crowd was pretty good really. I wouldn't have been surprised with less than 5,000. Probably shows they have at least 6000+ hardcore fans, although I'm sure someone will say the majority were traveling Port supporters.

Well done kids! Yes they cop some flack but they're only kids. Hope they can build on this in their own personal development.

As a North Melbourne fan its good to see the Franchises (GWS and Suns) and Port take the pressure off our 21000 home games.

If a tree falls in the woods and no one hears it does it make a sound? If GWS win a game and no one actually sees it, is it a victory? ;) Port that was horrible.

You reckon that crowd was poor wait until Power play their next one at home. At least GWS have some up and coming youngsters the Power are just gonna wonder the wildnerness for a long long long time.
