SBW will return to NZ rugby: Hansen

By Daniel Gilhooly / Wire

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen is convinced Sonny Bill Williams will return to New Zealand rugby.

Japan-bound Williams finished his Super Rugby tenure on a high for the champion Chiefs on Saturday night and will play the first two Tests of the Rugby Championship against Australia.

That will bring the curtain down on a high-profile two-year stint in New Zealand rugby.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen launched a fierce defence of Williams when questioned whether it was wrong that other players committed to staying would be denied a Test spot.

“He’s a world class player now. If we didn’t pick him, we’d be getting six lashes from the headmaster (the media),” Hansen said.

“He’s done things that are different and sometimes in New Zealand we don’t like people that are a little different.

“That’s not to say he doesn’t care about his country.

“We know he does and when I spoke to him about the opportunity (to play Australia), he couldn’t answer quick enough with a yes.”

After a lucrative 12-match stint in Japan, strapping inside centre Williams will return to the NRL, expected to be with the Sydney Roosters. He also wants to continue his professional boxing career.

Hansen hadn’t spoken to Williams about it but he suspected his athletic gifts wouldn’t be lost to New Zealand rugby.

“I think he’ll come back. I think he’s really enjoyed his time playing rugby and he’s really enjoyed the Chiefs.

“I’d be confident to say it’s not the last time he’ll play for the All Blacks either.”

Williams, who turned 27 on Friday, was wrongly painted as a mercenary, Hansen said. Instead he deserved admiration for pursuing challenges and maximising his potential.

“One or two people think he might be chasing money, but he’s a professional sportsperson.

“You only get a very short term in your playing career to make money. Doctors are doctors from the time they graduate to the time they die.

“It’s not his fault that he’s pretty good at boxing and people want to watch him do that. It’s not his fault that he’s good at league.”

Ok. I just got thrown by the 'clown' comment which sort of hinted that SBW would be like a turnstile in the centres. I'd back SBW's defence in the centres (not hits, but defence in general). Thats just a personal opinion. I reckon that SBW even if SBW gets the 11 or 12 jersey he'll play like a 13, and pop up where ever he sees an opportunity. No use just giving him a set channel. But honestly I just want to see him on the field !!

Damien Jeremy Smith has the no.13 jersey. SBW will play in the second row if he makes the team. It would be far too risky puting him in the centres against Greg Inglis. Inglis has made a lot of quality centres look second rate so it would be far to much of risk. We need experience centres like Steve Matai or SKD who can better read the second man plays. In league if you miss a tackle in the centres it is try time. I am not saying he could not adapt but it will take a while. Personally I think he would be much better suited to playing second row.

I doubt either Inglis or Hodges would make a fool of SBW, Inglis maybe, Hodges not even at his best. Either way I'd probably move him in because I've forgotten Hurrell. Lock for SBW.

What makes you say this Adam ? Defending in the centres is much harder positional wise in Union (not trying to start anything, it just is) I think SBW's gone alright defensively there. In saying that though. I reckon SBW will be chosen at 13 for the Kiwi's if he makes it..

Jokerman are you saying it is ok to walk out on your team half way through the year without saying nothing to your team mates or coach. It was a pretty gutless thing to do. Surely a contract has to mean something otherwise why dont we just pay the players per game and if they decide they want to change teams or codes half way through the season then they can. We all know that would be ridiculos. A contract is a good thing, it ensures a player is looked after financially if he was to brake his leg.

Katzilla if I was picking him for the Kiwis I certainly would not pick him in the centres. Justin Hodges and Greg Inglis would make a complete clown out of him. He would have to move into the second row. That would make a pretty formidable back row with SBW, Jeremy smith, Alex Glenn, Adam Blair.

riccardo - yeah it is disapointing that he isnt giving himself a chance of leaving a legacy but i cant blame him. you cant eat legacy. in this vocation your next game could easily be your last. he needs to maximise his earnings. i like what he's doing and how he's doing it. i was a huge fan of bradThorn when he was at the bronco's and more respect when he came over to the saders and failed but then went back to league and had a good season again. when he came back to the AB's a 2nd time i knew he would be a great AB if he stuck at it. these guys were thinking outside the square chasing a dream. a dream of being an AB is the only thing that exposed them to us in the 1st place and we should appreciate what they've achieved. but SBW's not finished yet and he has a few other personal achievements to tick off. Make the All Blacks tick, boxing tick, closure on NRL career.....TBA

That's the $1m question though isn't it Jokerman, if you'll excuse the intended pun. What is his chosen field? If it's the $ then surely boxing will guarantee him the payday he seeks. Another big question relates to the advice he's getting IMO. Now, I'm NOT a "hater". I'm a disppointed rugby fan, an All Black fan to be precise, and it's my belief that he could be one of the great All Blacks if he stays and continues to develop his game. He would still has some "sabbatical" consideration for boxing engagements and as he continues to gain exposure as an All Black surely his brand will grow to the point that his endorsements will enhance his income sufficiently that the immediate payday is no longer a meritable consideration. The fact of the matter is that his departure coincides with displays that show immense promise but erratic delivery; he is still some way from the player he could become. We haven't even seen him tested against the Boks or the Wallabies although the latter may be addressed in the weeks to come. Nevertheless he has made his decision and I wish him well. Time, as usual, will tell...

I have no issues with SBW leaving his contract. People break contracts every day. You break a written contract, and then there is the consequence, for SBW, some cash paid back to the Bulldogs, and a lot of judgment from others. My point here is the people who judge him, how perfect are you? Never broken a contract? Not paying a bill is breaking a contract, having a divorce.... What I find crazy is SBW, for the better, leaves his work environment and is judged. He didn’t hurt anybody. Then there is all those other league thugs (Is it Bird? The player who put a glass into his girlfriends face.)who bash their girlfriends, sexuality assault woman....and you don't hear much about it.

biltongbek, individuals can do what they wish. SBW is an amazing athlete, if he chooses to leave and then return so be it. They are picked on talent, many players who leave the All Blacks are cautious about returning because they don't know if they will make it back. And to be honest SBW does not fall into that category, he backs himself, and the truth is he will come back and most likely get picked immediately....see that's the problem here for doomsayers who dislike him...he is ultra talented and doors open for him. It’s just Human jealousy and judgment.

biltongbek - i'm also paranoid bout a bulls mentality taking over. how they managed to stifle habana all those years is mind boggling. no havent read matfields book, yet. i'm still pssed off at him for the PDV playerPower period. i remember reading somehwere bout matfield taunting jakeWhite. dumb. cant believe he still wants FDP back. dont be sorry for the rant biltongbek, its passionate and passion is what rugby's all about. while i agree with everything your saying i'd like to point out that meyer's only had 3 tests. what he says and what he does are 2 different things. i was like you in the lead up to the english tests thinking that meyer was gonna f it up royally with all his old skool mentality. i however was wrong and happy to be so. the boks have grown in the small time that meyers been in charge. no longer are they mindless soldiers suiting up for boks duty. i see now that they all want to be there and contribute. meyer has to have a plan. intelligence allows for change. hopefully meyer allows for change as time goes on. all the boks have to do each season is get better. as long as they're improving the world crown is there's to take from the AB's. biltongbek your forgetting how abysmal its been for bok rugby the last 3years. i'm excited. boks look to be on the right road to becoming the niggest thorn in AB's sides.

Mania, I know I should give him a chance, the problem in SA rugby lies deeprooted. Since Meyer's appointment and all the right things he said he is doing too many things that hints towards a Bulls dynasty in Bok rugby. Don't know if you read Matfield's book, but from the book it is clear that Matfield, Fourie du Preez and Heyneke Meyer are close, real close. Matfield even said to Jake White during a golfday after they had won the RWC that Meyer is a much better coach than White. So there is tunnel vision amongst these Bulls guys. When Meyer employed most of the Bulls coaches as his assistants, then wanted Victor and Fourie du Preez back and then added to that pulled in the Bulls front row with Dewald Potgieter, Jaques Potgieter et all, it showed for the English series he was going for the familiar and those who buys into the same old tired gameplan. Then when he made Jean de Villiers his captain it all confirmed one way forward only. Meyer even admitted at the time he believes that his gameplan is dependant on execution only and it didn't matter what the opponents would do. Now after giving him his "grace period" the reality is things haven't changed, in fact he is still adament to get Fourie du Preez in. Sayng that Goosen is a game breaker and he is in the plans is a contradiction of any other action he has taken thus far. Is he planning to change when Goosen is available? If so, then why get his squad built around Spies, Fourie du Preez etc? The reslity is these first two tests of the Rugby Championship is the ideal opportunity to experiment and take risks, sure we should beat the Argentinians with our pack and the same gameplan, but what do we gain from it? Nothing. Fourie du Preez has been poor for the Boks since his return from injury in 2010, Morne Steyn has been poor, everyone kept on complaining about Smit must retire and is taking the spase of the best hooker in world rugby, now we sit with the same scenario in even more pivotal positions. If Meyer doen't drop Steyn now, when is he going to? Bloody 10 tests of the 50 he will play before the next RWC. That means we have wastedv10 tests before we try the new guys. No mate, until he proves to me he has a new gameplan and is willing to give these youngsters a go, I will continue my questioning of him. If you wanted to pay someone a salary to mantain the status quo and just motivate the players, you could have appointed me, or even PDV. We have the talent and skills to be the best, I am bloody tired of individuals holding our potential back due to their bullheadedness and conservative apprach. Sorry for the rant, but it is time we speak out.
