Cahill sets up New York soccer win

By AP / Wire

New signing Tim Cahill set up the opening goal as the New York Red Bulls moved into first place in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference with a 2-0 home win over Houston Dynamo on Friday.

The win kept the Red Bulls (12-7-5) undefeated at home in 11 games and vaulted them atop the East with 41 points, one ahead of Houston and Sporting Kansas City.

New York went ahead in the 61st minute as former Everton star Cahill headed the ball across goal to defender Markus Holgersson, who prodded the ball into the net.

Jan Gunnar Solli tapped in a cushion goal in the second minute of stoppage time off a pass from Thierry Henry for the final margin.

The loss snapped a five-game win streak and eight-game unbeaten string for Houston.

Socceroos star Cahill has opted out of Australia’s upcoming friendlies to focus on getting off to a good career start with New York.

Chivas USA do have some good players, Agudelo, Angel and Joseph in particular but their style of play is not that of a national league standard, its pretty sad because 3-4 seasons ago Chivas were the most exciting and stylish team in mls...all gone downhill unfortunately. Portland is another team i like, bottom of the western conference but been thoroughly entertained with the 4-5 matches i've seem them play this season, Toronto bottom of the east also have a pretty good team and players but just cant get results. Starting to develop a soft spot for san jose, no big name marquee players but they just keep beating everyone, they are like old school juve with the amount of last minute goals they score.

I move from Australia to NY, in 1969, I was 12 years old. The crowds will come for the Cosmos, we already had a fan meeting in Chelsea, Manhattan of over 50,000. Love for the new Western Sydney club, been waiting awhile in the states for a club to come to the A-league.

This is where I worry because I live in New York. Wont work. There is a reason why New York Cosmos (even with Pele, Beckenbaur etc) left New York for New Jersey. Crowds wont come.

Chivas USA would still do good things in the A-league, it just because Galaxy are better.

BREAKING NEWS http://sports.yahoo.com/news/report-mls-close-deal-300-142800084--mls.html Major League Soccer is close to securing a $300 million stadium in the Flushing Meadows area of Queens, according to a report by the New York Post. The stadium, which would completely financed by the league, is awaiting approval from city and state officials but so far both have been very supportive. If the legislation goes through, it is expected that construction could start in 2013. “I definitely think this could happen in 2013 and it will generate construction jobs, permanent jobs and sales-tax revenues for the city and the state,’’ a state official told the Post. “This would be a big boon to the state and the city, and, of course, it would be very exciting for the different ethnic groups in the city that love the sport of soccer. It would provide a great recreational opportunity." MLS has made no secret of its desire to have its 20th franchise be a second team in New York. The league has received countless offers from cities across the United States and Canada but has remained focused on New York. Commissioner Don Garber explained to Goal.com why having a second team in the city would be important for the league. "We're very focused on it," Garber told Goal.com. "We believe that having a second team here will allow the Red Bulls to really capitalize on some of the success that they've had in this market." He added, "Having a rival here that we think will allow our league and our sport to capture the interest of soccer in this massive market. There's 13 million people here. There's no shortage of interest and a second team would really capitalize on that." The decision for the league to finance the stadium is a bold move that will likely impact the selling price of New York's second club. It was thought that the league was looking for $100 million before it decided to build the stadium on its own. The previous ownership group of the New York Cosmos disbanded partially due to its inability to secure a stadium due to the city's expensive real estate. Under its new owners, the club has joined the NASL and remains interested in joining MLS. It is speculated that the league will expect a higher franchise fee from potential buyers.

I've watched most of the red bulls games this season, only impressed me once...just because cahill and henry are there it doesnt mean they are the standard setters for mls...they have quality players but as a team not so good and they seem to have a poor coach who refuses to make subs, watch a seattle or rsl game for eg and you will see the large gulf between the 2 leagues, especially in terms of speed and pressure, the foreigners add the technical edge most of the time The only mls team that is shockingly below A league standard is Chivas USA...and they got thumped by the Galaxy today 4-0...Donovan had 4 assists put on a clinic.

You got to start somewhere, India trying to make the game more popular in a cricket Country. I feel for them, Australia although we are way ahead of India, we still are treated like Orphans in this country.

You got it right (except for India). Mexico is the USA's Japan. We seem to have the most organized set-up etc etc but then when we play each other the US and Australia cant win. As for India... review your work :) It seems like we are spending but really we are going worse. The latest news is that we will shorten the league to 4 months and have a 2 month IPL-Big Bash League type league with "stars" like the (retired for 3 years and no Indian knows) Jay-Jay, the (again no one knows) Argentinian Hernan Crespo, (only one people will know) Fabio Cannavaro, (some will know) Robert Pires and and bunch of amateur Indians.Yep India shall rise from 168 to top 100 just like that. (sigh)

I think Asia and NA is the future of the game. Over here even, India is spending money. I now Mexico is good, I watch Liga MX . Which is better then MLS, Like the J-league is to us.

I agree with this. We get A-League matches on TV here in America at like 12 or 1 in the morning and I love them (so much that I stay up till 3 in the morning streaming as well) but MLS is better but A-League is not far. So far I think you guys need to focus on the technical side of the game, which your last TD Rob Baan stressed and thus why A-League NYL is created etc. Once you get that then I can say you have an equal product. MLS may have strong players but that is not what makes us better, its more than that.

I watch this games as well, It is way better then the A-league. The pace is faster, think about this the Honduras olympic team, my mothers homeland, had a-lot of MLS players on it. The standard is way better the our own A-league.

Correct, it is above A-league quality, but only just. Quite a similar standard to us here, but it's in the wages department that the big difference is. Anybody who thinks that Cahill didn't go over there for the money first and foremost has rocks in their heads! I'd take $3.5m per year quite nicely too thanks...

I streamed this game online and was very disappointed with the standard of the game. On a technical basis the level is very similar to our own A-League, whilst there may be more 'stars,' the 8-10 players that are playing alongside them are very ordinary. This was a particularly bad game, as I have also watched some very high standard LA Galaxy games. Yes it is above the A-League. Not by much though...definitely some food for thought for Timmy boy and those who read his comments.
