In wartime, NRL must throw out the welcome mat for Gil

So maybe nothing has been said either way (if at all), and you can’t pry open the lock-jaw of John Grant, even with a very flat blade.

Yet I was set to thinking last night when I stumbled across a story in which Gillon McLachlan was speaking to Eddie McGuire about the NRL CEO position.

I was immediately surprised by the combination of maturity, open-mindedness, and what seemed like genuine passion this man holds for the city of Sydney.

I had to stop myself and get a bearing on just where I was at. It’s not that I doubt the quality of the man, or worry that his potential appointment is a mistake.

I had to adjust my position and ‘map’ within my brain because it did not match up to a reality I had painted in the confines of my mind. Painted? You may ask. Well I had a bit of help in that – for I am no painter.

Painted by the media. We are meant to be at each other’s throats. The mere mention of NRL should cause McLachlan to bare his teeth, open his eyes wide, and begin threatening people.

He should be shouting at his assistants to “Go and fetch the war chest! Now! Now! Now! Lay it at this mans feet!!” all the while picking a fight with Eddie. “Rugby….what, Mate? You -ah- wanna repeat that?” Raises his eyebrows, cocks his head sideways, and puts a finger behind his ear, as if to listen close.

Of course, this is utter nonsense.

I was being presented with evidence in front of me that appeared to suggest he is a dignified and able man, not prone to clouded judgement.

We have been told its nothing but war games and maps with dots on them, and late night strategy sessions born out of insecurity – fighting off sleep with the fear of being over-taken.

And that its just not the NRL doing that, its the AFL too.

So more surprising was when Demetriou came out and said it was a deep philosophy of his about people moving on, and him giving them his blessing (no rude or pointy shocks afterwards).

It figures. Before the whole War on Sport thing came about in the papers, I figured these people were bigger than that.

And this is something I have always seen to in my own life. You can’t worry about others – you do really need to worry about yourself. And I am sure this is not lost on Gillon McLachlan.

I look forward to the day that (if) Gillon takes on the NRL CEO position.

I won’t be one of the ones shaking their head and saying in a worried tone “Oh gawd! Now they’re ‘in the building!”

Those papers, almost had me caught up in their blitzy reality, and I try and centre my thoughts in those cases.

Who else is looking forward to a new NRL CEO, and can anyone think of a reason why we should continue to buy into this “its a war!” argument?
