US Open: The door is open for Andy Murray

If Andy Murray is ever going to lift a grand slam trophy in his career, the time will not get any better than the 2012 US Open.

Murray has shown sublime lead up form to Grand Slams before making the finals with apparent ease and looked to be the player to beat only to capitulate unceremoniously.

The 2010 Australian Open is probably the most stunning example of this.

In amidst the tears at his Wimbledon defeat, he murmured “I am getting closer” and he is.

It is the first time Andy showed any semblance of belief in himself that he could win a grand slam final. Problem was it was in front of such a partisan crowd that only Atlas has ever held more weight on his shoulders.

Returning the Wimbledon grass two weeks later for the 2012 London Olympics he must have felt that he was very close and could exact some revenge.

While not a Grand Slam win, defeating his nemesis Roger Federer at a Grand Slam venue in grand slam like conditions, he has be buoyed by that Olympic gold medal.

The door is ajar for him with Rafael Nadal currently sidelined and Novak Djokovic below his formidable 2011 form.

He has a major roadblock waiting in the semis in Federer, the 2012 phoenix.

The Swiss master showed signs of major emotional fatigue in the Olympic final and who could blame him after taking on the might of the entire British nation, not only Murray, in the Wimbledon final.

Roger is yet to be tested so far in the Open and will arrive at the semis should he get past Berdych. He is as fresh as he could wish to be, but you could cut him some slack if he rests his season laurels on his Wimbledon triumph.

If Murray wants to perform the exorcism of his complete career, then there is no better time than at Flushing Meadows in 2012.
