Canterbury Bulldogs vs Manly Sea Eagles: NRL Finals live scores, blog

By Alan / Roar Guru

The 2012 NRL finals series kicks off with a blockbuster as minor premiers the Canterbury Bulldogs host reigning premiers the Manly Sea Eagles. Join us for NRL live scores and commentary from 7:30pm AEST.

After experiencing a hiccup against Canberra a fortnight ago, Canterbury returned to winning ways last week, thumping the Roosters to secure their first minor premiership in 20 years.

The minor premiership is just reward for a Bulldogs side that under coach Des Hasler, went on a 12 match winning streak that included victories over class outfits such as Melbourne, Manly, North Queensland, South Sydney, Brisbane and Cronulla.

Canterbury’s opponents however also possess winning momentum.

Manly has won its past six matches with their last loss coming ironically against the Bulldogs back in round 20.

Despite their winning run, the Sea Eagles have struggled to string two halves of football together in recent weeks and can ill-afford to lower their intensity against Canterbury tonight.

Prediction

The opening 20 minutes of tonight’s contest should be enthralling to say the least. Both teams love to blow their opposition away early, with Manly in particular possessing a strong habit of starting matches quickly.

Manly’s winning record when playing from in front is outstanding. The Sea Eagles have won 27 of their past 29 matches when they have scored the first try.

Such statistics are not surprising given that Manly possess representative class across the park. Whether it be their ball playing forwards or their electric backs, the Sea Eagles can score points from anywhere on the paddock.

For the Bulldogs to limit the Sea Eagles point scoring prowess, it is imperative that they shut down Jamie Lyon, Brett Stewart, Glenn Stewart and Kieran Foran.

The preceding Manly players are the most instrumental in a Sea Eagles side full of game breakers. Each possess an ability to ignite an attack from nothing with a kick, a pass or a break.

This was evident against the Titans last week, with Brett Stewart, Foran and Lyon all playing a leading hand in Manly’s four pointers.

If the Bulldogs can keep these players in check, they will go a long way to securing a preliminary final birth.

Manly on the other hand need to keep tabs on two players if they are to ensure victory against the Bulldogs.

Sam Kasiano and 2012 Dally M medallist Ben Barba are the Bulldogs most dangerous players and will tear the Sea Eagles apart if Canterbury gets a roll on up the middle.

Kasiano is incredibly strong and, along with James Graham, is the forward most likely to open up Manly’s defence with a deft offload close to Manly’s defensive line.

Barba meanwhile needs no introduction. He ranks alongside Matt Bowen and Billy Slater as the NRL’s most dangerous kick returner and will cause havoc tonight if Manly fails to produce a unified defensive line when chasing kicks.

With both teams in terrific form, predicting a winner tonight is tough.

If the Bulldogs can stick with Manly for the opening 40 minutes, Canterbury’s home ground advantage may just prove enough to get them over the line in an epic encounter.

Those stats that calculate to 1/4 of a million would be true if there was only one team in the whole greater Sydney area - but that is obviously not the case. In actual fact, the area considered to be part of the Manly district taking in the northern beaches has less than 300,000 residents. Another interesting fact for those who like to bag Manly fans for not travelling - Manly's away crowds were the second highest in the league for 2012, behind only St.George Illawarra.

Hang on its around 15000 a game which granted doesn't sound like much however the total population of Townsville-Thuringowa is only about 300K so the crowds are about 5% of the population which if they could pull in sydney would equal a crowd of about a 1/4 of a million. Cowboys average isn't too bad.

"He got shown up by the Kangaroos back in May" The gig is up QGIRL. It's clear you have no idea about rugby league which is something the rest of us have known for a while. Foran didn't play the Kangaroos this year which makes it hard for him to be shown up. You keep believing that Morgan and Thompson are better halves than Foran!!

Manly are a boring team of thugs who cheat their way to victory. Take away all of the biased refereeing decisions they are routinely awarded throughout the seasons and they wouldn't be anywhere as successful as they have been recently. Foran is just a big mouthed punk who doesn't have very good vision. He got shown up by the Kangaroos back in May. Not in the same league as Thurston, Bowen, Thompson and Michael Morgan. Cherry-Evans was rejected by the Cowboys when his father was a talent scout with the club. I hope the Cowboys pound Foran into the ground should they meet each other next week. Take away all of the biased refereeing decisions that Manly are routinely awarded and they wouldn't be anywhere as successful as they have been recently.

It is disappointing, but Queenslanders need to pull their finger out and start going to the games. The Cowboys average has been pathetic for years. Broncos should average 50,000 to their home matches. The Gold Coast is a disgrace to Queensland. They never support their clubs.

In a physical and at times scrappy contest, the Bulldogs have secured a deserved six point win against Manly. The Sea Eagles for the first time in many weeks were lethargic in attack and really missed Lyon's presence after the captain left the field with a calf injury. Cherry-Evans had a poor night as did Brett Stewart with his hands although he did score a try in the first half. T-Rex Williams also produced rocks and diamonds. Both teams had trouble with their handling but the Bulldogs were by far the more clinical outfit in the second half as Keating, Reynolds and Ennis dictated terms very well. Kasiano, Pritchard, Tolman and Graham were terrific for the Bulldogs upfront aswell as they dominated Manly's forwards. The Bulldogs now are one game away from a Grand Final appearance. Manly now need to regroup and as they await the victor of the Cowboys - Broncos clash. No points in the 2nd half. Bit of a trend of late. Not good.
