Henriques needs to prove the doubters wrong

By bigdog2 / Roar Rookie

Now at 25 years old, many are asking what ever happened to Moises Henriques? It seems like only yesterday he was 16, playing for Australia at Under 19’s level.

Nine years on, that player who was once labelled as the next Mark Waugh has been a solid domestic cricket player for the last couple of years and a leader for the NSW Blues during that time.

But with more and more young talent coming through the ranks, he needs to step up this coming season and prove the doubters wrong. With the potential to be a world class all-rounder, you just feel that Henriques is now experienced enough to show all his class.

The potential is definitely there; you see flashes when he reminds you just what all the hype was about. He generally bowls around the 127-135 mark, but can bump it up to 140+. His batting is similarly inconsistent, he tends to get out playing poor shots.

You could watch him score 30 runs and think “this bloke looks like he’s up for a big score”, and then out of nowhere he gets out playing a shot he doesn’t need to.

Henriques still has all the tools, but sometimes it just seems like his head isn’t in the game properly. Has T20 played a role in that? If he sorts that out, he could be anything. His athletic ability and hand-eye coordination is still an impressive part of his game.

The problem for Henriques is that Australia will not pick players just on ability or potential. He needs to show what he can do this summer.

It all starts against Western Australia this Sunday at a Ryobi Cup match, followed by the start of a Sheffield Shield match on the 18th of September.

Good luck Moises.

He also added 3 wickets in that match too. Clarke was hinting that Australia may use him this summer. Good signs for Moey.

Scored his first century for NSW today. 161 not out. He's in super touch.

Great to see him pick up a tidy 2-20 today with the rock against WA. Hope he can make a big score when he gets his chance with the stick.

Have to agree 100 % Robert. The cricket team gets selected in a bizarre fashion, they ignore first class figures and just pick on looks, potential and marketability. Most of all if they come from the right region, ie NSW. Henriques is another Sydney dud. Knowing the selectors they'll put him in anyway. Now you wonder why we are struggling to win games?

He's only 25, that's a little harsh.

Henriques' time is long gone. Australia will get more mileage out of M.marsh than M.Henriques.

"North added he was confident the team would take positives from the loss and be able to turn it around for the Sheffield Shield match, which starts on Tuesday. "I think Mitch Johnson played very well with the ball," he said. " Seemingly having 47 taken from your last 4 overs is acceptable when you're the golden boy that is Mitch Johnson and have national and state captains backing you regardless.

He made a great start to the domestic summer yesterday. Three players, Steve Smith, Henriques and Mitch Marsh all played great one day knocks under pressure. Hopefully, they keep it up.

As mentioned by quietcordial & Disco, Moises Henriques today hit 78 runs off 45 balls! Great start, he hasn't been given much of a bowl yet though. But anyway, very impressive and hopefully he can take this form into the Shield match on Tuesday. *ANNOUNCEMENT* -- I'd love to keep this as a page to discuss Henriques performances over the summer, so keep a look out here on this page!

78 off 45 nuts is an impressive way to start the Domestic season for Henriques. Hopefully more knocks like that this summer from the all-rounder. Great to see SPD Smith making an impressive 99 not out at the WACA today also. Positive signs for Cricket NSW.

Highest List A score (78 from 45 balls) today. Along with Smith, Henriques helped take 47 runs off Johnson's last 4 overs at said pie-thrower's favourite hunting ground.

I think mixing young players and batsmen in particular like Moises Henriques, Mitch Marsh and Phillip Hughes etc in the Australian side with the experience of players like Ponting and Hussey will help them develop the right temperament and really help them to become the future of Australian cricket.

Reeks is an exceedingly frustrating player. Very fine batsman to watch but so rarely turns it on. Perhaps all the hype got to him, god knows there was enough of it. Mitch Marsh suffers from the same problem. Plenty of talent, not enough real output.

Very well said bigdog2. Henriques still has plenty of time to shine - hopefully he can prove to everyone what he's actually made of.

Are you serious,Australia wont pick on potential?I thought that was the reason why so many NSW players were picked ahead of everyone else.how do you explain S.Smith's selection to anything higher than club cricket, certainly isn't form -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download it now [http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/the-roar/id327174726?mt=8].
