Did we all miss the memo about form and talent being thrown so far out the window it is now a distant memory?

The number of upsets this week is hard enough to swallow for any NFL tipster, but the list of former contenders for the Lombardi trophy becoming pretenders is growing quickly.

Once upon a time you could pick at least half the games of the week with a fair degree of confidence. Not any more. And it is the so-called “weak” teams that are leading the charge against their more fancied rivals.

At least the Cleveland Browns are doing the right thing by us.

The Saints Aren’t Rolling In
In recent times, the Superdome in New Orleans was one of the most difficult away games for anyone in the NFL. Not only because of the high powered offence of the home team but because the fans were hostile and made the place deafening. Those Saints fans can be a rowdy bunch when they decide to get those brown paper bags off their heads.

So how did the Chiefs win on the weekend? I know it was in overtime, but how did it even get to that point? Might have had something to do with Jamaal Charles running for 233 yards. Moral of this game? If you stop the Chiefs running game, you should win, and if you play the Saints…somehow you’ll win.

Vikings Victorious…again?
The Minnesota Vikings are on top of the NFC North at this moment. Apparently one of the toughest divisions in the NFL this season. No, this is not a joke. It may have that “A vicar, a reverend and an Irishman walk into a bar” feel to it but it is true. Somehow the Packers have only won one game as have the Lions.

The Bears have beaten the Colts and the Rams (now that’s a joke) so the jury’s still out on them. The Viking’s season has included a small victory over the Jaguars, a close loss to the Colts and most recently beat the 49ers by a lazy 11 points. The 49ers? One of the big favourites to be Super Bowl bound come February? Um, yeah. The very same. The experts had Minnesota coming close to last this season…aren’t they experts for a reason?!

What do the Raiders and Eli Manning have in common?
Okay Pittsburgh, let’s go over the stats. Big Ben threw for a week-leading 384 yards and added four touchdowns. Well, you played the Raiders so that must be a good win then eh? What? No? But…you played the Raiders and scored four touchdowns! That’s a win in anyone’s book right? C’mon, the Raiders were hammered by the Dolphins last week… What fourth quarter comeback? The Raiders don’t make any comeback of any kind in any quarter. Sebastian Janikowski kicked straight? In the clutch? Now you are pulling my leg… Right?

The elephant in the room is of course the replacement officials. They may have had a little bit of an influence on some results during the last three weeks, and one or two may have been tackled by the likes of Bill Belichick, but the games have certainly had an extra level of intensity and we’ve seen a few more on-field altercations than normal.

However, I think we would all agree that the sooner the “real” officials are allowed to do their job the better. Maybe then the pass interference calls and phantom holding calls will be dealt to the likes of the Patriots and Browns respectively and let us pick a few more winners. Poor Cleveland, they can’t get a break either way.
