Geale stripped of WBA title

By Dushi / Roar Rookie

Today the World Boxing Association made it clear that Daniel Geale is going to be stripped of his hard earned WBA Belt and ‘Super Champion’ status, for avoiding his mandatory fight against WBA regular champ, Gennady Golovkin.

Geale travelled to Germany earlier this year to take on world renowned and long time belt holder Felix Sturm, beating him in a tough split decision battle earning Geale overnight respect across the world on September 1.

It seemed for a moment that Australia would a new golden boy of boxing in Daniel, a respectable and humble father who happens to be an amazing boxer.

However, it is with great frustration that once again we have a fighter who says they want to fight the best but when push comes to punch, they don’t.

The WBA ordered Geale to face Golovkin (now 24-0-0 with 21 knockouts), as a mandatory title defence.

Because of Sturm’s long overdue mandatory obligation to Golovkin, the WBA declared the winner of Sturm/Geale bout must face the winner of Golovkin/Grzegorz Proksa by December 31.

This would have meant an HBO showing for Geale and a blockbuster international fight, at least by Australian standards.

Geale has instead chosen to fight Anthony Mundine on January 2013 in Australia.

“We don’t blame Geale and his team for taking a safer fight, however they knew the obligations they would have prior to the Sturm fight,” said Golovkin’s management.

“Geale is still IBF champion and if he continues to win, this might be a great unification fight in the future.”

Why talk the talk and then clearly not walk the walk? Is not embarrassing?

Golovkin annihilated Proksa in 5. Proksa trashed Sylvester in 3 he's a wrecking ball not a bean counter. Geale just scraped home against Sylvester. Both these men would KO Geale easily. Truth is Sylvester and Sturm were hiding out in Germany fighting Euro flotsam, look at their record no big scalps, they make Sven Ottke look like a superstar. There's probably half a dozen middleweights who could beat Geale and just as many light middleweights. He's overrated in Aus because he's not Mundine. In the US they don't rate Mundine because his biggest win is only Daniel Geale. Geale got the Sturm fight because he said if he won he'd fight the winner of Proksa/Golovkin, he won, then reneged, Geales lucky they don't call the Sturm fight a no contest and give the belt back to Sturm.

Geale will get whacked by Sergio and Golovkin will probably stop him but no way on God's green earth does he struggle with the likes of Chavez Jr or Quillin. Pirog would be interesting. Lastly, don't begrudge a man for wanting to shut Mundine up for good and make a decent pay-day at the same time. He'll meet Golovkin and the other beasts at middleweight soon enough, maybe next year.

Golovikin has fought Mainly 'stiffs' but European champion Proska was a 'bean counter' a fighter who accumulates points. Golovikin has undoubted power but Proska's defence was woeful.Golovikin doenst move well and wont be able handle geales pressure and angles.

Felix Sturm had the money power to payoff Golovkin every time his mandatory defence came up. Daniel Geale isn't a name outside Australia. In the USA he's basically a nobody. Interestingly, Golovkin is set to face South Africa's IBO Super Middleweight champion Tommy Oosthuizen. So the WBA Middleweight crown may become vacant again... Or if the WBA had half a brain, they'd give the title to the unified WBC/Lineal World Middleweight King Sergio Martinez...

Agree with the issue choosing opponents but thats symptomatic of having so many boxing organisations. Only was forward IMO is to bring the 'big names' under one umbrella, but with the history of boxing that is impossible. In Geale case I believe it was more to do with money than padding his record..

There can be an argument put up if there are other fighters in similar situations. Sturn got to dodge his mandatory challenger for so long and the WBA didn't worry about that but they enforce that rule on Geale ? What gives here ? They also only gave Geale half as long as you usually get to fight your mandatory challenger. The wonderful art of boxing politics is again in full force..

So Sturm avoids him for two years and keeps his title but Geale can't wait a few months? Stupid decision but Daniel should have fought him rather than Mundine. Geale doesn't really have the drawing power without the title and I would have loved to have seen the fight.

Boxing has been losing credability year after year. Im a fan of Geales but no fighter should be able to choose who is oppents are imo. Why isnt it all planned out that everytime you win you fight the next bloke in your way of moving up the rankings or if you lose you fight the bloke below you for your ranking ? The way boxing is being run they really are giving the UFC a free run.

Golovkin only fought European Stiffs? His last fight, against the European Middleweight champion, he destroyed a seriously good boxer. People have to be honest, Geale isn't really in the top ranks of his weight division. He beat a faded Sturm, who was lucky to still have the title after home town decisions against Macklin and Murray. Geale will be destroyed by all of the other titlists in the Middleweight division. Plus a few other contenders.

What a load of garbage this article is. Why wouldnt Geale finally get a decent payday and national recognition by fighting mundine? Geale is internationally known after his last fight but needs needs national recognition in order to put bums on seats and sell PPV's. Geale will fight Golovikin in the new year and be the unified champ again. Golovikin has fought mostly European stiffs and bean counters and wont be able to handle Geales pressure. Geale has some big fights on the horizon after he dismantles mundine and avenges that dodgy decisionw hen they fought last.

Sad to see that Geale prefers to be Oz champ rather than king of the world. Doesn't look good does it. Glad I grew up in the eighties, waking up at 2or 3am to watch guys like Hagler, Leonard or Tyson. Don't think would have been I to boxing if I was from the 2000s. The long way down.

There's little chance of Geale getting another shot at the WBA 160lb title in the near future. Golovkin will face Quillin in a unification fight for the WBA/WBO titles. The winner will then have the bargaining tools to face the Middleweight King Sergio Martinez.

As I all ways said, Geale is a paper champion. He gets his tanned by Martinez, the WBC and Lineal Middleweight King. He gets KO'd by Golovkin, Chavez, Quillin, Pirog

Obviously Daniel has chosen to fight Mundine for financial reasons. Knowing he only loses his WBA belt. Still maintaining his IBF belt as a carrot for Mundine. After he collects big on Mundine he will then choose to fight for his WBA title back and another big pay day. Smart man.

The lack of objectivity in boxing makes the titles irrelevant anyway. Its the best example of governing bodies ruining a tough and skillful sport.

Frustrates me greatly with Boxing these days. Selective choising of opponents to protect records. I agree that unfortunatly this is the right call. Still hope he destroys Mundine

Unfortunately an argument can't be put up for Daniel. This Mundine fight is still a nothing fight for him with little interest outside Australia.
