Sydney FC coach Ian Crook resigns

By News / Wire

Sydney FC will announce Ian Crook has resigned his job as head coach after just six A-League games in charge.

The Sky Blues have called a press conference for 1400 AEDT at Allianz Stadium, where the club are tipped to confirm Crook will stand down from the role.

It comes after the Sky Blues suffered their second painful loss in the space of a week, surrendering a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to arch rivals Melbourne Victory at Allianz Stadium on Saturday.

That loss followed last week’s 7-2 thumping by Central Coast.

Sydney have two wins and four losses from their opening six games.

Crook admitted after the loss to the Victory he was feeling under pressure and he was also involved in a heated argument with fans, who criticised him for substituting star recruit Alessandro Del Piero off in the second half.

Englishman Crook was appointed as Sydney’s coach this season after the Sky Blues missed out on their top target, Central Coast boss Graham Arnold.

Assistant coach Steve Corica could be one option to take over in the role, at least in the short term.

6 Eredivisie Titles, 4 Dutch Cups, 1 Dutch Supercup. 1 Champions League Cup, 1 intercontinental Cup, 1 FA Cup, a QTR final and Semi final appearance at the Euros, 2 fourth places and a second round at the WC. Overall a winning percentage of 56.65% I don't think Hiddink is a good coach. I think he is a GREAT.

I believe the culture of the club has to change at Sydney,do we see everything in Australian Football as just simply everythings better overseas, most of those Sydney Fc players are from other nations Bosschart and Luverick being two who lets face it wouldnt make the Mariners squad. Terry Mc Flynn another case in point some interesting facts ,Mc Flynn was on the bench for the Mariners game at Bluetounge and came off the bench in the 46th minute where the Mariners held a 3-1 lead at the time ,goals then came in the 56 62 65 and 67 th minutes to take the final score to 7-2, Mc Flynn again was on the bench for the Victory game he came on as a sub in the 71 st minute at 2-0 up goals were then conceeded in the 78 86 and 90 th minute, isn't that not telling you something ?. A young Australian kid picked up in the V.P.L. won that game for the Victory on Saturday night and Sydney Fc buy players from Holland , Belguim or the Czech Rep who the Mariners wouldnt purchase . I can only read tea leaves and not minds but I think Del Pierro came out here to help young Australian kids learn about pro football not play with a group of european footballlers over the age of 25 who arent that good, thats a legitimate reason for him to not continue next year I believe. I would just mention that Yairo Yau looks to have a good technical reading and knowledge and positioning of the game and wants to be creative and dynamic. Personally for a new coach i'd probably look towards Branko.

Well out of the home based coaches, I can't see anyone else having a chance! Farina or Culina have no hope, and I can't think of anyone else. That's why I think Bleiberg has a shot, he's available, an old fox, and actually a very good coach. Unless of course they look overseas, which is also highly likely.

Peter Wilson you are deluded if you think useless coaches like Postegoglou, Arnold and Popovic can do anything to stop Sydney from continuing on the downward spiral. Just because they've had success in the Z League proves nothing.

First Postecoglou, then Arnold and then Popovic all turned down the SFC coaching job. They even took less money to go elsewhere. The SFC coaching job is the biggest high pressure job in Australian football. You're on a hiding to nothing and the focus of Australian media. Crook wasn't sacked, he chose to leave and Pignata even tried to talk him out of it. The Sydney board approached Crook to do the job, they thought so highly of him. Kalacs gambling problems don't help either - Nicevski doesn't have any solid support. SFC in a bit of disarray (again) and will struggle to make the finals, they just don't have the players either.

Shame to see; coaching roller coasters never benefit anyone. On the other hand, something needed to be done about Sydney's marking and defensive structures.

Gotta expect it when a Pommy blow in, gets the Sydney Eff Cee gig. Not a bad bloke, but Crooky ain't achieved anything in the trophy cabinet yet. They had their opportunity. They could have had me holding the clipboard at Eff Cee, with Frank Arok or Raul Blanco carrying my cones. Instead the dopey administration went for Crooky, Bimbi and Spider. I'd sack both B and S if they gave me the job - just not good enough at cone carrying......any half decent clipboard carrier knows that. If Sydney had had me calling the shots, with either Blanco or Arok as my assistant, carrying the cones, we'd be top of the Z League by now and eyeing the Asian Champs league next season. It would cost them a lot less cash too. They could do worse than give me the once over......as chief clipboard carrier for the Sydney gig. I'd kick a few bums to start with.

Although i do wonder, does he have a world cup clause in the contract like he had back in 2006 with PSV. Could be useful if Australia finish 3rd in the group. Just saying.

He's getting paid about 8.3 million pounds a year to coach Anzhi Makhachkal in the russian premier league he's actually doing fairly well right now, recently led his team to a 1-0 victory over Liverpool, currently second in the league
