Australia get out of jail in Cardiff

By Russell Jackson / Roar Guru

Kurtley Beale has scored a sensational long-range try in the dying seconds to give the Wallabies a 14-12 win at Millennium Stadium to send captain Nathan Sharpe out a winner in his final Test.

In the 80th minute, replacement centre Mike Harris rocketed onto a Berrick Barnes pass before finding reserve lock Dave Dennis who went tearing down the right touchline before popping a ball inside to Beale who scored in the corner to cap move that started just inside their own half.

Sharpe attempted the conversion but it fell short.

Beale’s try was the only five-pointer of the Test with Welsh points coming from four penalty goals to fullback and man of the match Leigh Halfpenny while Beale kicked three penalties for Australia.

Until the try, Australia looked set to be kept scoreless in the second half for the second consecutive week before getting out of jail as Wales looked like breaking a six-game losing streak.

It was the Wallabies’ eighth straight win over Wales and they finished the European tour with a respectable 3-1 record.

Australia was lucky to go into the halftime break leading 9-6 with Wales playing all the rugby as they shifted the ball wide and punched holes in the Wallabies’ midfield.

Beale slotted three penalty goals from five attempts in the first half with Halfpenny kicking two for Wales but missed an easy attempt right on halftime.

The Wallabies suffered an early blow with aggressive flanker Scott Higginbotham injured making a tackle in the 15th minute and being replaced by Dennis.

Australia squandered several opportunities in the opening term with cheap turnover ball while some poor kicks in general play invited the dangerous Wales back three of Halfpenny and wingers Alex Cuthbert and Liam Williams into the game.

Wycliff Palu produced a try-saving effort midway through the half when backtracked to force a ball in the in-goal as Wales looked set to score.

Halfpenny sliced through the Australian midfield before chip kicking Barnes but the Wales fullback lost his footing and Palu won the race to save the day.

Johnno, i ouldnt answer yo earlier because there was no reply button to hit, but i honestly think that if you do go back and practic your ideas wit the kids at your school you will learn so much about yourself.. You wrote an amazing opinion piece in here earlier on, on what is the mangled web that is schoolboy rugby in Sydney, full of so much detail, but too much in one chunk, and still needs to be fleshed out more, because the topic is still current. My other suggestion, and its your choice as always, would be to consider sports journalism as a career. You've obviously got the passion, the will, the drive and the thick skin of a Y Gen. But just like Phipps, Dennis and Tmani your skilsl justs need to be honed, re-trained, directed, provided with more structure, to bring balance to your game. A good chief reporter can give you all that, if you dare to pick up the ball - if you do, you'll be a beter rugby critic for it, cme RWC 2015. Now go get yourself a VB and straighten up the couch while you're at it (journalism school will teach you to write like this - trust me)

These were all recent internationals and I could have easily added more. Couldnt be stuffed because the point was obvious - we are battling big time in attack, even compared with other sides who are supposedly inferior against the same opposition. I know attack has decreased but ours has clearly decreased more and we dont look likely to change under the current guard.

Ra I know mate you keep telling me to get my hand dirty, and head down to my local club and start the grass roots drive. I just might do it. I have been thinking about getting into coaching at my old school , maybe a lower age grade team there why not. Get back to grass roots footy, and then i will be able to relate to how difficult coaching can be too, and working with cattle that always fire. I must might Ra, would be good fun.

Chivas a good response. We are on the same page we both want the wallabies to be the best team in the World, and be the best they can be. I should re-clarify my self. I support the wallabies and will always go for them even when they lose. I hate it when they lose, it can be quite comedic, and makes for greta reading on the roar when everyone rips in lol, and a good David Lrod article too ripping in like the old veteran ,tiger he is from the old school. But I don' t like the wallaby slowing. A few losses can be good sometimes and humbling but i want the wallabies to win every game, and will still go for them even when they lose. But I am no sugar coat, and you certainly are not either. I have got strategies with sack Deans line. And it's this and i have said this many times. Jake White or Ewan Mckensie I think are both credible options, and could fill the void left by Deans, very adequately. In Jake White we are dealing with a world cup winning head coach. And Link has been wallaby assistant, super rugby title, had experience in Europe, his time has come i think too, be given a chance. I'd choose Link, but if not Jake white would be highly credible,.

Never have I seen such polarising comments on the ROAR. Even after a win, there is the full spectrum from embarassing gushing accolades to downright ornery and black negativity. I know this happens to some extent on a lot of posts, but I've never seen it like this before. This tells me that something is rotten in Denmark. There needs to be change for the better. Now that JON is gone, maybe someone will step into the breach. The common issues seem to be: 1. JON's top down model hasn't worked 2. Deans is too polarising for Australian fans 3. The Wannabe's are playing conservative rugby and seem to prefer to win ugly 4. The grassroots have been neglected 5. There is no where near enough FTA rugby on TV (Club, Suoer, International) 6. Sportsfans, both die hard and newbies, are turing away from rugby If they "fixed" the above issues rugby would be in a happy place. I'm prepared to stick to my guns and cop some flak over these issues. I look forward to rugby "moving forward"......soon.

You are right Mike, that was a dopey comment by me, one which has been taken to task. As I said, I love my Wallabies and it hurts to see them play like that, as mentioned I thought it was great that we won, and stole the win at the end. I just wish we were playing better, and I think we can and should. I don't think this is wrong, and I believe as a fan I am allowed to whinge about that. The fact people are celebrating this gave me the false impression they were happy with how we played that's all.

we can all cherry pick examples of some games having more tries than others but the fact reamins that since the profeesional era try scoring has decreased year after year. it is 40% lower than 10 years ago. fact before you ask i'm quoting an IRB statement released at the end of this years 6 nations tournament.

Sadly, you are correct and at least half the people on here agree with you. Something has to give.

Why do you think people whinge about Deans even after a win? Does that not tell you something about the way they are playing the game these days? Sadly, the ARU can't afford to pay Deans out so we are stuck with him until his contract runs out. Hopefully we'll learn from this and keep an Australian in the top job. Only an Australian can have the right passion for Australia...especially when we play nations in the top 10, there's no way we should ever employ a coach from one of them.

yes. they are like the english football team. the fans hate their side because they have unrealistic expectations and the players hate the fans for this. it's a vicious circle and it has lead to decades of ill performance and contempt which has lead to ill performance and more contempt etc etc

I believe I've watched enough games to judge from the majority of reviews whether a game is worth watching or not. Sadly, this is the first time I've done this in 25+ years of rugby viewing. I refuse to watch the brand they're playing at the moment, that's all, no harm meant, everyone has a choice. But guess what? I'm not the only die hard fan tuning out.

Exactly. I've been supporting for 25+ years and I've never seen anything like the Deans era. It has not always been like this. "Win ugly and maximise the chances of keeping your high paying job" seems to be the mantra for the coaches and support staff. The wheel will turn once people turn away in droves.....which seems to be happening, as WoobliesFan points out. Fourth most popular football code and what are the ARU doing about it? The top down model hasn't worked. Get back to grassroots. Play an entertaining brand of rugby. Get club and Super rugby on FTA TV. How much does the game have to decline in Oz before someone does something?

Thats all fluff I'm afraid - fact is we are struggling to play attacking football and score tries. Some examples - Ireland 7 tries v ARG, France 3 v AUS, Scots 3 v NZ who scored 6, ENG 3 v NZ who scored 3. The list goes on and we are sub standard in this area. Fact.

Taps mixes in some poor decisions with some good ones. We're supposed to assume he won't learn or improve? McCabe akes less poor defensive decisions, but offers zero in attack - he's even an ordinary bash and barger. I see you're defending Deans - the two of you can head off into the sunset happy with defence and ignoring attack. Beale and JOC are both ball runners not creators. Sure they can do both, but they'r eboth a lot better at running than creating. Cooper is a failed test match 10? Did you not see the Brisbane test? He had a bad run at the WC, but he's had some very good games. Give him a half decent forward pack and see how he does, because he didn't have one in 2011 except, wait for it, in Brisbane. Who was 5/8 when we trounced France in paris, our best attacking performance for 5 years? Let me guess - I don't suppose it was Cooper was it? You're too ready to write off the ones you don't like.

Mark you're kidding yourself saying this: "When he and the players feel supported they will begin to express themselves much more freely and readily". So, if us nasty fans were more supportive, the Wallaby attack would be better?

Close to a full strength first XV. Missing a lock, a half back and one other back (JOC). And Cooper if you count him.

It might be a bit late to buy in to this debate but I recall earlier in the year Taps making some very good defensive reads. They say 13 is the toughest position to defend, and he seems to defend there a fair bit even when playing 12. That 26th minute one I remember well, he loitered on the inside because he wasn't sure AAC would drift across in time to get that man. AAC did, but only just. I think it's a bit early to write him off though.

mark both misses were from set piece, centre aside is irrelevant. McCabe hasnt defended the 13 channel from my memory at set piece. I agree Taps needs to work on his drift defence, it is an obvious flaw from the weekend. McCabe offers next to nothing ball in hand in comparison to Taps, neither player is perfect but its easier to teach some drift defence and alignment then trying to teach someone how to attack. If we are a far way ahead in terms of ability why are we not beating them by this magic 12 points every time we play them? Fact is we havent got close to that margin and we were morelikely to lose some of those matches then win them by a big margin. Cooper is a failed Test player because of two matches? Goodness me, the results against Test opposition would suggest otherwise. Anyway its probably not worth bothering about, I dont think he will be in a gold jersey next year. JOC may well be a better option than Beale, frankly at Test level its not a big stretch. JOC would need to learn to be a distributor first and foremost. Right now he is a runner. Thats isnt what you neeed at 10 in Test matches. Unless he plays for the Rebels at 10 for the entire season, he should be not even consdiered for the role in tests.
