Marquez vs Pacquiao: Has Marquez demolished Pacquiao vs Mayweather?

By John Davidson / Roar Guru

Juan Manuel Marquez’s sixth round demolition of Manny Pacquiao has thrown another spanner in the works of the proposed superfight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The fourth rumble in the Marquez-Pacquiao series was a beauty, the Mexican flattening Pacman in the dying stages of the sixth round with a powerful overhand right.

Pacquiao had been the busier of the two fighters, throwing more punches and rocking the tough Mexican in the second round, as well as scoring a knockdown in the fifth round.

Entering the sixth the Filipino was ahead on the scorecards but it didn’t matter – the 39-year old Marquez, who controversially had not been judged to have won any of their previous bouts, would not be stopped.

The evergreen welterweight unleashed the ‘perfect’ punch and it was good night Pacquiao. The 33-year old from Kibawe was out cold.

It was the result and the justice many fight fans thought Marquez deserved after four very close and demanding bouts with Pacquiao, but ultimately unrewarding, that stretched back to 2004.

But a very pertinent question remains – has the chance of a Pacquiao vs Mayweather gone for good? Has the event that many boxing fans have been waiting for, for years and years, dead in the water before its time?

Unfortunately there is a good possibility it has.

Before the Marquez fight there were many encouraging signs that Pacquiao vs Mayweather might finally get off the ground. Pacquaio had agreed to drug testing, one of Mayweather’s conditions. He had agreed to take a smaller slice of the purse, where the Filipino took 45%, another of Mayweather’s stipulations.

He had even tried to get the Marquez bout postponed so he could face ‘Money before the end of the year.

Mayweather had finished his jail term and, at 35 years of age, is running out of big-name opponents.

In one article, Pacquiao said: “He can wear my trunks. I don’t care. I just want to get him in the ring and make the fight.”

Mayweather was running out of excuses.

But now he has been given a massive one. Pacquiao’s loss yesterday weakens his position. It raises doubts over his future and his partnership with trainer Freddie Roach.

Pacquiao has now lost two fights in a row and is looking increasingly vulnerable, compared to previous days when he looked invincible. From September 2005 until May 2012 he was undefeated, winning 15 fights in a row.

The nature of Pacquiao’s devastating defeat to Marquez will raise the specter of retirement and asks many questions. Will his family allow to fight on? Can his body take more punishment? Is he getting sloppier in the ring? He has, of course, a senate seat to fill in the Philippines.

And there is already talk of a sixth Marquez vs Pacquiao fight. Why wouldn’t there be? Every battle of there’s has been a classic, as well as being big money-spinners for the organisers. Boxing promoters love nothing more than a re-match.

So the anticipated mega-fight between the two best pound-for-pound boxers in the world looks shot down, yet again. Boxing fans just can’t take a trick.

Marquez is on PEDs!!!!! He has hit Pac like that before and never knocked him down. Now in the fourth fight he knocks him down in the third and them completely knocks him out in the sixth....what kinda sense does that make!!!! Look at the size difference in Marquez's shoulders and neck. And then look at the fact that he was walking thru every punch Manny was throwing! That's definitely a sign of some sort of PED use! Marquez figured Manny is using, why shouldn't I??? The sport of boxing is becoming very dangerous with the use of PEDs. All fighters should test all year round like Nonito Donaire, the only fighter in boxing to allow it.

JMM was the stronger fighter he's power punches really took a tow on Pacman. It was just a matter of time the 3rd round knock down was equally impressive, very fast, a couple inches lower and the fight could have ended in the third.

I don't know how many people noticed this, but around the middle of the 6th round Pacman did not look as tough as he had looked before. I don't know if he was wearing down or what but at the end of the 6th it was Marquez that was coming on strong. Look at the replay and watch for it, I think Pacman is on his way out of boxing.

I agree Chris^ some of these comments are ridiculous. 1.Mayweather is amazing to watch, his defence is second to none. Further his offence from this defensive style is incredible. Anyone here ever tried throwing a lead straight from a shoulder roll defence position. If not, try it then look at the speed that Floyd does it with. As for people saying that Floyd doesnt want to risk his reputation- I think Floyd would rather the money - he changed his name form pretty boy to money indicating hes more about the money than the rep. I would expect to see Floyd in the ring early 2013 and with a date booked for later in the year, whether the latter bout is against Pacman will depend on how long of a lay off Pacman has and I think will be dependent on him reinventing himself and getting a win against a notable fighter along the way so that floyd can close that 100 mil loss into something more around 50 mil. 2.Marquez most certainly did not get lucky, he KO'd Pacman with the same punch that he knocked him down with in the early rounds. Manny sensed he had JMM nearly finished and got careless by trying to chase a KO himself. Being ahead on the points he could have afforded to take the time to pick JMM apart for the win. This is coming for a huge JMM fan and person who had a sizable bet on JMM in this fight. 3. Pacman is not done as a boxer. He is only 33 years old. If he want to return to form he will have to reinvent himself and remove the things in his life distracting him from boxing ie his political career. Personally I thought JMM had the fight from the moment I saw both fighters in their dressing rooms. Pacman was joking around etc shaking hands with people. JMM was stone serious and focused. Pacman need to adopt this attitude and we will see the amazing fighter that he can be return to the ring. 4. "Super fight" - for so long people have only looked to this matchup as being one that counts and implying that no other fight is interesting or amazing. Dont get me wrong I want to see it, but these are the fights I want to see in between. Cotto v Canelo, JMM v Bradley, Trout v Mayweather or Ward v Mayweather (at a catch weight) and Gamboa v Dib as for who I would like to see Pacman fight in the near future other than Floyd I remain uncertain.

Some of the comments on here are absolutely amazing! the lack of knowledge shown by Floyd & Paq fans is incredible. Here is a suggestion to the idiots claiming Floyd is a boring fighter >The whole idea of boxing is to hit & not be hit!!! this is a very important basic of boxing,if you want reckless bar style fighting watch the UFC or guys like Amir Khan. Just to even the idiotic stakes up> Where are all the Flomos who for years accused Manny of 'juicing' its amusing that that theory has now been consigned to the dustbin! Now we have the idiots who are claiming Marquez landed a lucky punch?! Marquez is a counter puncher, look at the KO.....it was a classic short right hand which is also a classic counter punch DOH. Back to the original point of this article> Marquez hasn't killed a potential Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight though he has cost Floyd Mayweather roughly $100 mil by beating Manny. The amount of fanboys Manny/Floyd have still gurantees a PPV blockbuster...says a lot that.

Have you ever done boxing and try to lose weight? I did it for 14 years and losing weight with a jogging with a blck bag underneath your clothes and dooking it out in a sonar is no fun as it drains you whole lot more than building more muscle in a gym. After all you can sit around and do nothing and you will gain it. As for Welterweight King well have a look at his record won 43 (KO 26) + lost 0 (KO 0) + drawn 0 = 43 rounds boxed 315 KO% 60.47 Did you see that 0 at losses? He is undefeated and he did not go and fight 2nd rated boxers. Light Welterweight (IBO) Over 135 lbs or 61.235 kgs to 140 lbs or 63.503 kgs Welterweight (ABC, IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC, WBO) Over 140 lbs or 63.503 kgs to 147 lbs or 66.678 kgs Super Welterweight (ABC, WBA, WBC) Junior Middleweight (IBF, WBO) Light Middleweight (IBO) Over 147 lbs or 66.678 kgs to 154 lbs or 69.853 kgs He cleaned out the 130 pound weight class efeating Angel Manfredy (TKO2), Carlos Rios (W12), Justin Juuko (KO9), Carlos Gerena (TKO7), Gregorio Vargas (W12), Diego Corrales (TKO10), Carlos Hernandez (W12) and Jesus Chavez (TKO9). Corrales, Hernandez and Chavez would all go on to win world titles after their one-sided losses to Mayweather. jWBC Super Welterweight Diamond Title (2012) IBA Welterweight Title (2006) IBO Welterweight Title (2006) World Titles WBA Super Welterweight Super Title (2012) WBC Super Welterweight Title (2007) WBC Welterweight Title (2006-2008, 2011) IBF Welterweight Title (2006) WBC Super Lightweight Title (2005-2006) WBC Lightweight Title (2002-2004) WBC Super Featherweight Title (1998-2002) Has a record of 20-0 (10 KOs) in World Title fights. Mayweather Welterweight King? No certainly not. Up until recently he was keener to stay at 154, until he saw the challenges of facing Canelo and Trout - absolutely massive at 154. Being dropped hardly means anything. Being KOd is far worst. Coming up from 135 to 144, as JMM did is tougher than dropping from 150-146 as Mayweather.

Marquez have been dropped on his arse quite a few times. As for Welterweight King Mayweather is the King there. The the bout was supposed to be fought at a catchweight of 144 lbs. When Mayweather Jr. weighed in two pounds over the contracted weight, he was forced to pay Marquez $600,000 ($300,000 per pound). Marquez made his trip up the weight devisions just like Floyd did. Lets not forget the catchweight refers to a a weight between two recognized weight classes mutually agreed-upon by the two boxing participants; traditionally, they meet in middle. So you had a Super Welterweight vs a Super Lightweight (WBA/WBC)/ Junior Welterweight (WBO/IBF) 140 lbs vs 154lbs.. Actually Mayweather fought De La Hoya weighing at 150lbs. So Marquez maybe watered up but Floyd was watered down.

Pac destroyed MAB, MAB went tooth and nail with JMM. Floyd whitewashed JMM, Cotto gave Floyd a tough fight, Pac destroyed Cotto. Guys that JMM struggle with, MAB, Juan Diaz, Katsidis (not really but still a war) - Pac would destroy them.. The world of boxing and promoting 1. 3 Dubious decisions - Check 2. Make sure other fighter get a bad decision as well. - Check 3. Create the hype and and pitch 2 boxers who lost their faith in the judges of boxing and are bound to go for a KO. - Check

What a load of rubbish I read in some of the above posts. Is Juan Manuel Marquez great, future Hall of Famer? You better believe it. He might have 6 defeats on his record, but the 1st was a DQ, read nothing into it. His two losses to Pacquiao are down to dodging scoring. Marquez's career record should be considered with just 3 losses. As for his fight with Mayweather. He was a watered up lightweight. They fought at a 142 lb catch weight. Marquez has been fighting more at 140/147 in recent years. He's the current WBO Light Welterweight King. If it hadn't been for a terrible robbery in Marquez-Pacquiao 3, he'd also be the WBO Welterweight King. Marquez has never been KO'd either.

Kane good points but I think your off if u say marquez is not a great fighter. It's not the highlander where there can only be one. There are great fighters out there of all different styles. I love the sweet science and am of the same mind tha mayweather is one if not the best. Marquez is the modern day finito lopez. But trust me that was nu lucky punch. Manny's speed and power effectiveness was amplified by the fact that he was a south paw. Hard to fight any south paw with those attributes. Usually u stay outside of his left foot and double up on the left hook either to the body and/ or head. It's the only punch they can't see. Problem is ,it can be a big gamble when facing someone with Mannys speed. It must be timed perfectly and that's what he did. As soon as he turned side ways ( barely eluding the punch and that's why it's called the sweet science by the way) he threw the right cross right down the pike and , if you watch the replay, was already setting up the hook to the body. Masterful. If marquez and mayweather do it again I don't see things changing. Out of these two MASTERFUL counter punchers Floyd is better

Did you watch same fight as I did? Marquez knocked him down solid in 3rd. Before he knocked out Pacquiao he had hit him again with a looping right and Pacquiao was retreating along ropes before coming in for the kill, which he should not have done seeing Marquez had just seconds before whalloped him. That's why Pacman got careless, he was already stunned from moments before. Marquez looked strong and steady. Pacman was again bouncing all over out of control and he got his lights put out.

Come on folks get serious. Pacman was bloody lucky to get this far. Every fight I watched I could not believe his opponent didn't flatten him with a right hand. Never have I seen such poor defense from a boxer. Pacmans crazy bouncing around throwing kung fu back punches etc was ridiculous. Anyone who says Marquez threw a lucky punch is brain dead. Marquez stepped to the side Matador style and walloped the bouncing, hands down Pacman. I don't like Mayweather at all as a person but his boxing skills are far above Pacmans. Pacman should count his blessings that he never got in ring with Mayweather. Maybe now we can watch some good up and coming boxers get their exposure. Why a rematch for Pacman and Marquez? Because the Pacmans people think it was a fluke. What's next? pacman wins a decision..so they have to fight again and again? face it..Marquez flattened Pacman convincingly. THE END.

@Kane and yes Mayweather mastered the way to ease out of a fight. Again you have described and old Marquez, he's a much better fighter now. Think about it... every one was anticipating a Pacquiao/Mayweather fight, Pacqiao being the predicted winner due to his speed and fighting style and skills. Marquez mastered his style, speed, skill . He got weighted, measured in a masterful surgical way and he got knocked out. Marquez did not flinch in a very quick way he countered and lasered the point of impact delivered and destroyed it. The way I see it Mayweather is the one that needs to be ready for todays Marquez. Sadly we all know Mayweather will not want to fight him neither do Paquiao.
