This week the PGA Tour of Australasia heads to the Hyatt Regency Resort in Coolum for the final time as it hosts the 2012 Australian PGA Championship.

There were serious doubts earlier in the week over whether the tournament would happen or not after disagreements with resort owner Clive Palmer about sponsorship on the course.

The tournament at the Par 72 resort layout will go ahead, but it looks to be the final time the event will be held at the Coolum resort.

Let’s look at the main contenders’ chances in this week’s tournament.

Michael Hendry:

The Kiwi could prove hard to beat as he looks to take out the Order of Merit. Hendry sits in second place behind Peter Senior, and was lucky to make his tee time at the Australian Open last week.

After securing his card at the Japanese Tour Q-School, Hendry made his tee time by 30 minutes after flights were delayed coming home.

He still managed four solid rounds around The Lakes layout for a final score of -1 in a tie for seventh place.

Hendry managed to finish fourth at the recent ISPS Handa International in Perth, finishing behind Jason Dufner and Bo Van Pelt.

In a star-studded field, Hendry proved he could beat the likes of Paul Casey and Edward Molinari, and with a lower class of field this week and Hendry’s drive to win the OOM, a Top 10 finish could be on the cards.

John Senden:

After a disappointing final round last week, in which Senden shot a final round of 82, he will be looking to bounce back this week.

Senden held a two shot lead coming into the final round in Sydney last week, but in gale force winds he battled away over the final 18 holes in a performance which was hard to watch.

He’s been enlisted as the favourite for this tournament, and if he manages to put four solid rounds together he will be thereabouts come Sunday afternoon.

Geoff Ogilvy:

After a tough year in the United States for Geoff Ogilvy, he will be looking to finish off the year with a victory at the course which has brought him success in the past.

Ogilvy won the tournament back in 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Resort in Coolum, and comes into the week off a top 25 performance in Sydney.

Ogilvy finished eight shots behind last week’s winner Peter Senior, and many are tipping him to find some form this week.
