Wilkinson set to decide on career future

By AP / Wire

Former England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson will decide on his career future in February, saying he will continue playing only if he feels it will benefit his club.

The 33-year-old retired from international rugby after last year’s World Cup having won 91 caps for England and the British and Irish Lions. He has helped Toulon to first place in France’s Top 14 this season. His contract expires at the end of the season.

“I’m capable of carrying on, but it’s a delicate balance,” Wilkinson said in an interview with sports newspaper L’Equipe.

“The question isn’t what I would like to do, but what is best for my team. After I’ve asked myself that question, then I’ll think about myself.”

Wilkinson is confident Toulon can win the Heineken Cup this season.

“Can we do the double? I say, yes,” Wilkinson said. “I’m never satisfied, but I’m happy with how we’ve played. We’re heading in the right direction.”

Wilkinson thinks star-studded Toulon, which is packed with proven Test players such as fly-half Frederic Michalak, 91-Test veteran Matt Giteau of Australia and former South Africa lock Bakkies Botha, is one of the best he’s played in.

“Everyone knows their role,” Wilkinson said. “The most important thing is the rapport between the players, and that’s where we’re lucky.”

Should Wilkinson decide to retire at the end of the season, his swansong could be the Lions tour to Australia in June, if he’s selected.

Greenwood was a better centre than BOD

They are all home games for them at the end of our season though. Ireland is one of the best teams in the 6n, and the all blacks put 60 points on them.

How so? If the all blacks played teams like Italy and Scotland every year they would score a lot more tries than they do against aus and as. Which would mean there top try scorers would score more than they already do. How is that drivel? It seems like common sense to me.

Mark you aren't serious in trying to suggest that a lions victory means the NH is equal to or better than the South are you? The best players from 4 countries vs the 3rd ranked team in the world? Combine a Sanzar team and see how you go!

Mark your whole Lions argument is flawed IMO, the best of four countries combined should easily beat the best of one country 99% of the time. However the reality is they just can't. I look at the Lions and think wow here we go again the best of four trying to take down one of the SH again, to me it just highlights the difference in rugby and attitudes between the hemispheres. The SH teams generally expect to win the NH teams hope to win and a combined Lions team once every four years is their best shot at acheiving something special over one of the upstarts from the south. One can only imagine the carnage a Southern hemisphere combined team would cause up north. Also why not leave the name calling out of your posts it really is quite juvenile to say the least.

Jerry superbly done mate. This exchange has been comical in spite of the facts presented. I'd say the SH wins again, comfortably ;)

I think BOD is a very good rugby player I don't think he is the greatest but that's my opinion. Just like you are giving your opinion Mark, it is not a fact.

Oh Mark, I remember the days when I thought you might have some sort of logical reasoning ability and might be open to being persuaded of something through weight of evidence. Well, I say 'days', actually it was more like 20 minutes in between my first post to you and then reading your response.

Why do you assume I'm angry? I'm calm and measured, I just genuinely think Mark is either deluded or on the troll.

oh Jerry... i remember the days when i too lived in a southern hemisphere bubble.... frankly i was blind... and i am glad that i can now see.... how long are you going to beat the southern hemisphere drum off the back of new zealand? face facts the rst of us down under are not playing better rugby in general than our european counter-parts and therefore the 6 nations was a much stiffer comp than the tri-nations due to its nature.

Given hallucination, memory loss and confusion are all symptoms of sleep deprivation, I suspect he doesn't. Would explain his tenuous grasp on reality and inability to accept obvious facts.

Just a question mark, do you have a life? You must watch every rugby game on either side if the equator! When do you sleep?

The only thing I agree with you on in anything you have said on this thread is that I also would prefer to see every team play each other. This conference system is a jokes and it was proven so this year when the weakest finalist was pumped up to third and a home final simply for winning a weak conference.

We will see next year the lions continuing their very real dominance over the wallabies. as i've said they've beaten australia 75% of the time and i just can't see how the wallabies can win a 3 match series against such talent to choose from when we can't afford not one injury to our match day squad it seems. i think we will see new zealand very much tested if not beaten by France, the only side that can match them man for man. and i'm not sure what SA and argentina are doing next June. we will once again see a bunch of red neck aussies and new zealanders act aghast once again (as they do most world cups) when a team made up of players from a different continent that they take no notice of actually has just as many world class players as they do, which goes against the mentality that somehow player from the southern hemisphere are actually supermen and players from europe are somehow inherently inferior.

i wonder if mark and HT will wake up to themselves next year when normal viweing resumes and the NH sides continue to lose to their SH foes? oh wait, that happened this year too, as jerry as pointed out with cold hard facts (evidence that HT says is now irrelevant despite railing on every thread about facts facts facts!!). any way you want to twist it, results matter and the ledger is solidly in favour of the SH. kind of makes sense considering the 3n teams are generally 1,2 and 3 in world rankings. doesnt this prove something? mark, so 1 win changes everything does it? talk about cherry picking!! any metric that you want to use refutes the basis of your argument (which seems to float in the wind anyway), so who needs to open their eyes? the abs lose one match in a decade to the poms and now its panic stations? and a harbinger of things to come? on pure performance and results (which pays the bills mind you) the NH is inferior to the SH. if you want to claim the rugby is better or worse, then thats another discussion. but again, tangible evidence proves your argument to be false. the SH more times than not beats what the NH has to offer. doesnt mean the style employed in the NH isnt worthwhile or worth watching, just different. however, results trump any hypotheticals you want to throw up. all and sundry claimed how woeful the wallabies were playing and yet they came away with a pretty handy record. what do you want? style or substance? or both?

i can only say that as a neutral i will always choose 6 nations and european club rugby as the most interesting and entertaining rugby on the planet. far better than tri nations or super xv which has become predictable. I welcome the new RC. Thats a little more interesting and makes it more challenging. I wish the super xv would go back to playing everyone once and i wish the rugby had more soul. give me munster v leinster or harlequins v saracens before i watch another rebels v force match. in fcat some of the most dour games i've ever seen were played by aussie teams last year. one of the Brumbies v reds was a particular low point which even got a mention on skys rugby club UK as a 'why do the southern hemisphere keep putting northern hemisphere down when they play like this'
