Rado’s tactical obsession his undoing

By Jesse Wray-McCann / Roar Rookie

Rado Vidosic’s sacking just two and a half months into the season shows he was never ready for management at A-League level.

After seeing the triumph of Barcelona’s management succession plan involving Pep Guardiola and now Tito Vilanova, it’s a real shame to see Australia’s own ‘Roarcelona’ could not follow suit.

There’s something special about an assistant rising up to pick up the reins put down by his previous boss.

There’s also something special about Rado Vidosic.

He is often spoken of as one of the A-League’s best tacticians; a brilliant analytical mind that can craft almost unbeatable game plans while also picking apart the intricacies of the opposition’s strategy.

But his incredible fanaticism for the tactical side of the game was what led to his downfall.

In a league that has been transformed by ever more impressive tactical developments in recent years, it may seem strange one of Australia’s foremost football strategists has ended as a failure.

But the game is football, not chess.

Weeks ago I wrote on this website of how Vidosic was neglecting the motivational side of the game that his predecessor Ange Postecoglou had mastered and as a result, the team was suffering near the bottom of the ladder.

For someone who most expertly analyses his opponent’s weaknesses, it’s unfortunate Vidosic did not analyse his own shortcomings.

He has now been replaced by former Gold Coast United man Mike Mulvey, who will need to learn from Vidosic’s mistakes, and it seems he already has.

“These guys are winners,” Mulvey said in his first press conference as Brisbane caretaker manager. “They just need to rediscover maybe the hunger, how to get the kill again.”

But it’s also imperative that Mulvey involves Vidosic, now the club’s technical director, as much as is practical.

The former Roar boss is a major cog in the club’s famed footballing philosophy and must continue to be an influence on the team.

Mulvey needs to focus on motivating the players to believe in themselves again while also making the most of Vidosic’s undoubted gifts as a tactician.

You will find the start of the end for this bloke was his immature and lack of respect celebrations after Brisbane beat Melbourne 5-0. Talk about a lack of respect or a former two league winning coach. Disgraceful.

Bit of a dummy spit by Matt Smith in the post interview after the game ... But in saying that, they were looking a bit like the old Roar under Mike Mulvey. However, still look very much like lost children abandon by their father Ange Postecoglou and still hurting from it. Next week will tell if they lose that one, their so called loyal fans will start jumping ship..

Mahler - there are another 6 results proving your claim, so you don't have an argument, but surely you have some idea on how it can be fixed ? for we have the same number of players, many of whom have had a lot of success but what is wrong,? that's the question that needs answered.jb

Roar 0 Perth 1 - the Roar performed exactly as I talked about in the above comment. They cannot score goals. They dominated a terrible Perth outfit but couldn't do the one thing they are supposed to do. It's dispiriting.

Mahler -Although much of what you say has an element of truth, it does very little to point out where the Roar are lacking at the moment. Every week we see probably the best goal poacher in the HAL battling away, not always up the front where he should be, but back ,even in the defence line, trying to get into the game. Why is this so? Today we have teams performing well in the HAL & in almost every case we find the team has recently imported quality players, usually from overseas, to get their "engine rooms" ticking over.Starting at the top we have CCM with their new "English" ex-pro, WSW with their Dutchman & Japanese,Adelaide with their South Americans,Glory with Miller, and Victory with their Brazilian. I think you'll get my point when I ask,who did Roar bring in??? After Championship 1 and Grand Final 2 the Roar backroom team should not have been sitting patting their backs but looking at ways and means of improving what they had. Was this done? I'll leave you to mull that over. jb

You make some valid points but I suspect that, like others, you are allowing the players to have excuses for what has been a dismal season. You can have all the motivation you need but scoring goals is what the game is all about and it's where the Roar have been failing, save for that one runaway game against the Victory. You can't go on passing and passing and then fluffing your lines at the finish. Oh, how many goals have been thrown away! (As well as one or two that were incorrectly diagnosed as being offside)? Time and again we have seen the players cock it \up in attack and defence. So don't get too carried away by giving them excuses. Their destiny is in their own hands. The coach can stroke their egos and rev 'em up but, in the end, what counts is how each man plays and right now, they are not playing well enough.
