Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar have begun plotting the Mumbai Indians’ IPL game-plan via text message.
Ponting was picked up by Tendulkar’s franchise for $US400,000 ($A386,000) in the IPL auction last week.
It caused one Indian media outlet to describe the pair playing together, and possibly opening the innings, as an “unprecedented miracle”.
“I sent him a message as soon as the auction was over just to say I’m looking forward to playing with him,” Ponting told reporters after making an unbeaten 138 for Tasmania at Bellerive.
“He sent a message straight back saying the same thing.
“It will be great fun for us to play together.
“We’ve played a lot against each other over the years and spent a little bit of time together off the field.
“I think I can still learn a fair bit from him as well.
“Hopefully he might even learn a few things off me.”
Ponting has embraced Twenty20 cricket after playing a full tournament for the first time, the Big Bash League with the Hobart Hurricanes.
“I never really felt that I’d got into the momentum of the game and I felt I did that this year with the Hurricanes and really enjoyed it,” he said.
“I felt like, coming away, I had a really good grasp on how I needed to play to be a good Twenty20 player.”
The former Australian captain says he’s still undecided about whether he’ll play more domestic and T20 cricket next season.
“I really enjoyed the Big Bash and you enjoy a day like today,” the 38-year-old said.
“No doubt I’ll enjoy the IPL.
“But the thought of another pre-season’s not overly exciting.”
