A stunning form turnaround has convinced Melbourne Victory star Archie Thompson his side can win the A League title.
After a run of three straight defeats, the Victory produced a dazzling display against Newcastle on Sunday, whipping the Jets 5-0.
The win was crucial, Thompson said, with the finals looming and the Victory desperately searching for their earlier form.
“It was very important because we had three weeks of very disappointing results, especially the last two when we really could have stamped some authority on this league,” Thompson said.
But he said the Victory were philosophical about their recent run of outs.
“Every team goes through a slump at some stage in the year but we needed to put in a good performance and get rid of this little rut now before we go into the finals.”
Whether or not the Victory make the leap into the top two, Thompson said a win in each of the remaining games was key.
“Even if we win every game and don’t make the top two at least we’ll have some momentum,” he said.
Thompson had been missing with a hamstring injury before his return on Sunday but said the difference had been a return from their wayward ways.
“I think in the last couple of weeks we probably shied away from our structure and discipline,” he said.
“But last week the boys seemed to train even harder because they know there were not many games left, especially at home.”
Thompson said the simplified finals system now means the Victory had a better chance of winning the title from outside the top two.
“With the finals structure now it’s definitely a lot easier than it was in the past, but the important thing for us is that we get a final at home.”
Thompson said the Victory could match any side in the top echelon.
“If we make the finals there won’t be anyone wanting to face us,” he said.
