Have people forgotten about James O'Connor?

By Rhys Maiden / Roar Pro

Recent predicted Wallaby line-ups have been circling the Roar lately but there seems to be no mention of James O’Connor.

Despite him not appearing in the 2012 season, he has been one of the biggest talents of the last few years and deserves a spot somewhere in the Wallaby backline to face the British and Irish Lions in June.

Outside backs have been a real feature of Australian rugby this year, with players like Jesse Mogg, Alfi Mafi and Chris Feauai-Sautia stepping up to the plate in terms of attacking rugby. Even former rugby league star Israel Falou has been thrown into the equation.

The Brumbies currently stand at the top of the Super Rugby ladder and the Reds are not far behind. The Force have been kept to one win this season, but their new recruits are finally linking and are playing some terrific rugby.

That leaves the Rebels, the problem child of the Australian conference at this moment.

Besides their win in their game against the Force in Round 1, they have been a train wreck on their tour of South Africa.

James O’Connor, being played at fullback, has lost playmaker Kurtley Beale due to an injury and that fight after the game in Durban.

It is strange to see that he has not been moved into a playmaker’s position of either fly-half or inside centre.

O’Connor, while being a part of team in a not so pleasing part of their season, hasn’t been amazing, but has been solid in defence and attack.

The Wallabies have to pick a team on both form and experience and James O’Connor has what it takes to join the Test side.

In my Wallaby team he will be positioned on one wing, partnered with Digby Ioane on the other. In 2012 he was beginning to look like a playmaker at fly-half or centre but his positioning for the Rebels this season gives us the impression he won’t be picked in these positions.

Robbie Deans shouldn’t overlook James O’Connor based on the poor Rebels performance of this season.

Interesting Team Freddy. By naming an entire team you certainly set your self up. I think there are 2 players about which you would not get and argument. Genia and Horwill , and maybe Moore. So many options. I think Mogg deserves first go at the moment. QC on the wing. Not a bad idea. Campo loved fullback and quite liked fly half. But was at his best on the wing. Had tackling deficiencies too. I want the toughest angriest bunch of forwards to take it to the Lions who will try to bully us. The focus seems to be on the backs. Lets pick the pack that will give us go forward ball and any of our various back combinations will do well.

1.Robinson 2.Moore 3.Alexander 4.Horwill 5.Timani 6.McMeniman 7.Hooper 8.Palu (until; he gets hurt, then Aoeta) 9. Genia 10. Toomua 11. Ioane 12. Leillifano 13. O'Connor 14. Quade Cooper 15. Falou O'Connor is a better runner than distributer. By playing him at 13, he has a little bit more room to move than at 12 and is less likely to be targeted in defence. Toomua and CLL are in form and deserve their spots Falou is rock solid under the high-ball and an attacking weapon. As crazy as it sounds, I would consider Quade Cooper on the wing (doesnt have to tackle and still gets space in broken play off kick returns, with a monster like Falou to feed off him). If not QC, Tomane, Mitchell, AAC Thoughts?

Notremos I like your comment about team play. Remember theBrumbies - Gregan and co. how good at support play they were. I've seen a few breaks made by Aus players of late which end up no where either because of no support, the player not looking for support (trying to be rock star) not to mention silly chip kicks. The best scenario of course is having the talent all of who combine

A trend I notice on this and other sites is that some posters think that their opinions are somehow more valuable than others. Such a shame that they think that insulting other posters somehow enhances the value of their own. The reality is that such a low form approach actually has the effect of devaluing the posts of the offenders.

That backline is similar to the rwc backline (except for folau) and yes you are most likely right about Barnes in the 10. I want Beale in the side but I really want JOC at the fullback position

Yes AH same goes for AAC it only occurred to me when I read the criticisms of these two and I realised everyone here is trying to pick 15 stars. So McCabe isn't a magician like others but he does the job asked of him and rarely let's his team or coach down. Compare that to KB's starting games last season when he was unfit and clearly out of sorts.

Reading your comment made me realise why Deans keeps picking McCabe.

Reading all of the various comments has really highlighted the for me the real problem with the Wallabies. We are continually focussed on building a team of champions. This is obvious when the discussion comes down to the strengths of individual players, and their weaknesses rather than how they work together to bring a strong team. This comes down not only to their individual brilliance but also their character and their ability to be additive to the whole. All of the world cups have been won by champion teams. Teams that would die for each other. My mind still goes back to the 1995 final in South Africa. Watching the Springboks up against the All Blacks, a team full of Champions including Jonah Lomuh at his best. As they sang their national anthem I felt that I had never seen a more motivated team. For 80 minutes the South African team put it in on the field they played for each other and for their country. Who could forget the final Wallaby try in the 1991 World cup game against Ireland. That was a TEAM unwilling to leave anything on the field. And England in 2003. Wish we could focus on the TEAM and support them. Pick the personnel and mould them.

Moronic? Ok where does AaC rank in the world as a 13? Amongst the best or the middle? In my opinion the middle at best and therefore is at best average but I would more accurately place him below the middle. If he was born a NZ'er would he have ever worn a black jersey? I highly doubt it. JOC hasn't played for how long and the games he has played this year have not shown him to be anything more than just another player playing out of position. Sure in the media he is a star but on the field he has done a few star like things but in general is just average. If he had of been born a NZ'er would he have worn a black jersey yet? I highly doubt it. Maybe in the future but he would have been made to earn his spot playing hard NZ rugby for a lot longer than he had to in Aust. Forget about the past. Forget about incumbency. Forget about contract amounts. Just pick players in their specialist positions and give the jersey to the one that is playing the best NOW. AAC's bet rugby was a long time ago. So was JOC's. Shame for JOC because without the hype and the premature selection he could have been great.

Don't be so arrogant. This is an opinion site and everyone is entitled to their opinion regardless of whether u think its right or wrong, personally I think your comment below where u claim aac and joc are below average and have done nothing deserve selection is one of the most moronic statements I've read on this site but u have every right to hold that opinion and I'm not going to tell u that u shouldn't post it or "should be taken out and shot"

True but hoping with a bit more talent coming through recently the days of owning a wallaby jersey without continual effort are behind us

Brett: I like the side, except for Cooper at flyhalf. IMO O'Connor, Barnes and Lealiifano are better options at 10. According to an article written by Zavos late last year senior Wallabies, including Reds players, didn't want Cooper back in the side. If senior players don't want him and Cooper doesn't like the environment at the Wallabies he is hardly an ideal option. Obviously Folau would have to improve, but if he can convert his rugby league skills to union he will be a massive asset to the Wallabies.I just hope he stays with union long enough to settle and play to his potential. MA: Barnes, Ashely-Cooper and O'Connor have all shown they can play well for the Wallabies. What would your starting backline be?

12, 13, 14, 15 are 100% wrong in my opinion. Should be that combo if you are placing big money on who ever we play. Can't understand why players who have done nothing, proven they are average at best keep getting selected in front of people who specialise in the position and are in form and winning games for their respective SR teams. Just because they have played before or ae on big contracts doesn't mean they will win games for us.

JOC at fullback. Backline should be 9 genia 10 cooper 11 ioane 12 barns 13 AAC 14 folau 15 JOC. However maybe move JOC to wing and have Beale at fullback

Don't post such dribble then. Seriously your back line is laughable. JOC is a terrible 10. Actually he couldn't even hope to achieve terrible status. Barnes should never be given a Wallaby jumper ever again. McCabe destroys back lines and will go down in history as the worst experiment in living memory.
