It was a different story for both teams in round one, which makes for an intriguing contest today.
The Blues will be fighting to get their first win on the board while the wounded Pies will look to extend their great start to the season by punishing Malthouse’s Blues.
You would think by the hype of the opening game for Carlton that their season would already be over. Obviously that is not the case however if they want to be taken seriously this season a win against the more fancied Pies will go a long way.
Missing for the Blues after last week are Eddie Betts (Jaw), Shaun Hampson (Appendix), Nick Duigan (omitted) and Aaron Joseph (omitted).
The Blues are also still missing key forward Jarrad Waite (injury) and Heath Scotland (suspension) which is a killer blow to their structure.
In for the Blues comes young hard man Tom Bell, Sam Rowe, Dylan Buckley and finally Marcus Davies.
The Magpies are also missing key personnel with Dayne Beams, Clinton Young, Alex Fasolo, Luke Ball and Andrew Krakour still missing for the clash.
Only two changes from last weeks winning side for the Pies with Heath Shaw and Paul Seedsman replacing an unlucky Josh Thomas and Jack Frost.
What a match this will be, Malthouse vs the young gunner who put him out of a job in Nathan Buckley. There is sure to be no love lost in this epic encounter.
A win for the Magpies would set them up for next weeks blockbuster against the Hawks. Whilst a loss for the Blues would have them staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start with Geelong, West Coast and Adelaide to come.
Key players to watch for both clubs are Scott Pendlebury who plays his 150th match and also Andrew Carazzo who generally gets the best of Pendles.
If Pendlebury can get loose and get his team mates up and about this should be a long day for Carlton fans.
