West Coast Eagles vs Hawthorn: 2013 AFL live scores, blog

By TheSportsFreak / Roar Guru

An early potential Grand Final preview awaits us this afternoon as the West Coast Eagles host Hawthorn at Patersons Stadium. We’ll have live scores and commentary from 4.40pm AEST.

Despite being two of the big favourites coming into the season, both teams come into the match with a loss from the opening round.

And with both teams having tough draws throughout this year, a win today is absolutely crucial

The corresponding game last year was a scrappy, but tight contest. But both teams haven’t had easy starts to the year.

For West Coast, injuries have hurt them once again.

Mark LeCras once again finds himself on the sidelines after a fractured lower arm, joining Nic Naitanui, Mark Nicoski, Sharrod Wellingham and Matt Rosa.

They were disappointing after half time in their loss to Fremantle in the round one Derby, with a lack of run through the midfield and poor turnovers around the ground.

The double-edged sword is the 15-day break for this game – rest for the players, but also the disruption of having just their second game in 28 days.

What is good news for West Coast is the possibility of Daniel Kerr making a return for today’s match after a long layoff with a knee injury.

They’ll need their forward line to function a bit better than in the Derby, with just six goalkickers.

While at Hawthorn, it’s been a shortened pre-season and some strange off-field circumstances.

Making the Grand Final meant being behind the eight-ball in the lead up to the new season.

Add this week’s comments from former President Jeff Kennett to the protracted discussions surround Buddy Franklin. And then, of course, last week’s loss.

Let’s not sugarcoat this, Hawthorn were mentally weak in the second half last week folding again to Geelong.

A six-day break and trip across the other side of the country won’t help them either.

But midfielder Brad Sewell says the quick turnaround is a positive for the group to forget Monday’s game and move on swiftly to a venue they’ve played well at of late.

The Hawks are likely to have Brian Lake make his debut for the club in defence, while Michael Osborne could force his way back into the lineup after a knee injury.

I know plenty of focus will be on the Collingwood vs Carlton game today, but this match deserves similar billing. After all, we could be seeing the match up that happens on Grand Final day later this year.

Surprised and a bit offended Liam Shiels not named in best Hawk players list in any report of the game i've read. The tv commentators pointed out his gutsy and significant contributions several time - once even giving credit to Luke Breust by mistake. Mystery , and a bit of injustice. hope the important people at the club noticed at least.

Inexcusable fourth quarter, no redeeming qualities. If you have any pretensions to flag contention you CANNOT let yourself get blown off the park in the last quarter to a team coming off a six day break and you had a fifteen day break. I don't even know what to say, everyone needs a long look in the mirror and to ask themselves, when the chips are down are they interested in this whole Premiership gig or are they just having a fun kick around. *spit* 0-2, both at Subiaco, I don't even

Admittedly, I'd say most of those boo's came from the large Hawks supporter base near their race.

FINAL SCORE – Hawthorn 23.10 (148) def. West Coast Eagles 15.8 (98) There's a few jeers from the crowd as the Eagles come off the ground. Hmmm, the locals a little restless today. A couple of poor second half performances for the Eagles.

FINAL SCORE – Hawthorn 23.10 (148) def. West Coast Eagles 15.8 (98) The discussion about the 6-day break not warranted today. The Hawks ran all over the top of the Eagles. 8 goals to 3 in the final quarter, matched up with their 6 goal to 1 first quarter. 37 inside 50's for WCE - not enough in any game of football. The Eagles did get within a couple of kicks just before three quarter time, but the Hawks smashed the Eagles around the ground late. Stats to come...

FINAL SCORE – Hawthorn 23.10 (148) def. West Coast Eagles 15.8 (98) There's the final siren. A fantastic victory today for Hawthorn, winning by 50 points! The margin blew out late, but the Hawks far better today!

Q4 1:10 left – WCE 15.8 (98) | HAW 23.10 (148) They've just showed the next 4 for West Coast. To be honest, they should be locks for 2 of those games. The Port Adelaide game in Adelaide will be 50-50, as too will Carlton at home.

Q4 2:29 left – WCE 15.8 (98) | HAW 23.10 (148) Chris Masten spears the ball into the forward pocket to Beau Waters. Then a short pass in board to Josh Kennedy, who marks 49m out. Kicks his 5th GOAL, but too little too late.

Q4 4:00 left – WCE 14.8 (92) | HAW 23.10 (148) Trouble for Jack Darling - he's on all fours. Looked like he was favouring his knee for a second there. He's back up now. One thing the Eagles don't need now is another injury!

Q4 4:54 left – WCE 14.8 (92) | HAW 23.10 (148) Make it 5 for Buddy now - Jed Anderson kicks it to his advantage and he runs onto it! Wowzers - this is a fair final quarter from the Hawks!

Q4 5:11 left – WCE 14.8 (92) | HAW 22.10 (142) Hard to believe the Hawks are running this out better than the Eagles. But that's exactly what's happening. As Luke Breust kicks another goal - this lead is out to 50!

Q4 6:16 left – WCE 14.8 (92) | HAW 21.10 (136) Rioli kicks back inside 50 - the Eagles getting frustrated now as another free kick... and 50m penalty given away. This time Franklin the man to line them up. BLASTS IT THROUGH! Hawthorn with a percentage boost

Q4 7:00 left – WCE 14.8 (92) | HAW 20.10 (130) Pressure in the middle of the ground is exceptional from the Hawks! They force a free kick for holding the ball after a chain of handballs from the Eagles. Hurn then gives away a 50m penalty. And Bradley Hill will kick for goal from 35m out - the sealer - GOAL!!!

Q4 7:47 left – WCE 14.8 (92) | HAW 19.10 (124) Jamie Cripps does well to give the Eagles a chance at half forward. Luke Shuey is somehow back on the ground - handballs over the top to Jack Darling - GOAL
