Who will go first in the 2013 NFL draft?

By Nigel Wakeley / Roar Guru

The 2013 NFL draft begins next week and could make or break a franchise’s future prospects. Here is my 2013 NFL mock draft.

You can read the results of my 2012 mock draft here.

Once again, I do no film review of any college prospect, nor do I watch any college games through the season, so this mock draft will more be a review of positional need for each of the teams than a specific pick of a particular player.

Players are chosen from what I believe to be a reputable source – NFL analyst Mike Mayock’s top five position rankings.

Each player chosen is my opinion of the team’s greatest need, and then the selection is the highest-rated available player at that position.

Where I consider the team has multiple needs, the selection is the highest available prospect at the relevant positions of need.

Of course, this mock draft doesn’t account for draft-day trades, which always destroy any good (or bad) mock draft. The NFL draft will commence on April 25 in New York.

Notable players who weren’t drafted in my mock were QB’s EJ Manuel and Matt Barkley, TE Tyler Eifert and CB Desmond Trufant.

Thanks for reading, let me know your thoughts/criticisms!

Jones is a smart guy and the Pats generally like that in a player. Just don't know if athletically he's a 1st rounder. They'll probably look to take a punt and try and grab him in the 2/3 round. Interesting draft - lots of question marks on players below the top 5 and no 'can't miss' quarterbacks.

Can't see Philly going with a CB that early. Bit of a reach imo. If both OT guys are gone I see us taking Dion Jordan or Star Lotulelei. Both fits in our new defensive system. I actually see us trading back more than anything.

I've actually heard a fair bit about the Pats perhaps being interested in Jones, because he was All-American at both tackle and centre, and they love versatility. Maybe not in the first though. Who do you back?

Do the Raiders have any good first round picks? Maybe that's why they did that awful Carson Palmer trade :P

No way Warmack falls that far - Eifert will go to the Bears before Teo - look for Manti to land with the Vikes. Elam and Werner also a little high and I haven't seen Barrett Jones anywhere near a 1st round mock draft - total reach. Huge premium on quality corners so look for Trufant to sneak into 1st round - good family track record. Top 4 picks look about right.

That's actually a very good point Nigel. Such a dominant team like Bama produce so many NFL prospects but are they system players or natural talents. Rolando McLain was a beast at Bama and was a top ten pick by the Raiders who have recently released him. He didn't live up to the hype not withstanding he seems to be a bit of a nut bag. Mind you playing for the Raiders will do that to you.

From reports I've read and Mayock's rankings, Williams is probably the 5th-ranked end, he'll definitely be among the first 50 picks. Usually when a college like Alabama has such a good defense and so many highly-ranked players, teams are a bit wary because they aren't sure if one player is making them all look good, or if they actually are all very good.

Williams will likely go in the second round, I actually wouldn't mind if the Niners traded up in the second round to get him. We need some beef on the defensive line. The draft these is a 3 day TV phenomina. Fantastic !

No Jesse Williams in first round? Be great to seem him drafted high - seems like there was hype galore till his bench press at the combine, tailored off a little, then he ran that smokin 40 yard dash at his Pro day and he started climbing up the mock drafts. Gotta love the media s#$%storm that surrounds the whole event.

Nice one Nigel, my Niners need to address safety, pass rush and defensive line in the draft.
