Mayweather vs Guerrero: Boxing live updates, blog

By Adam Santarossa / Roar Guru

Most men who leave jail worry where their next pay cheque will come from, but Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather is not like most men.

Mayweather walked from a two month spell in prison into a $100 million dollar four fight deal with Showtime, which makes him the highest paid athlete in sports.

The 36-year-old plans for four fights in 30 months before walking off into the sunset to a life of promoting, music producing and whatever else he desires.

But as his long time adversary and once rival for the pound for pound title, Manny Pacquiao knows even the most bulletproof of plans can come unstuck in the world of Boxing.

Cotto, Ortiz, Mosley, Marquez, Hatton and De La Hoya all said they were the fighters who would end the run of Floyd “Money” Mayweather, yet he remains unstopped at 43-0, with Robert Guerrero the latest in line to stop the fastest hands, and fastest mouth, in the business.

Guerrero is a five-time World Champion across four weight divisions and has some handy names on his resume. Australia’s own Michael Katsidis, Vicente Escobedo, Joel Casamayor and Andre Berto the biggest, but it will still be a herculean effort to stop Mayweather.

But Guerrero only needs to look at Tim Bradley for evidence that it can be done. Bradley defeated Manny Pacquiao although controversially last year, when everyone thought a Pacquiao win was fait accompli.

Guerrero can bang that’s no question, but laying a glove on Mayweather is another thing all together. The best defensive fighter we’ve seen for a long time, Mayweather may not often leave opponents on their back, but has bludgeoned some of the biggest names of the sport with wide point’s victories. Many wish he had put them out of their misery far earlier with a knockout.

Whilst there was clear evidence of Pacquiao slowing in his recent fights with Juan Manuel Marquez, there is no real suggestion that father time is catching up with Mayweather.

His jail term doesn’t seem to have had any real impact on his physical health and despite Mayweather admitting he did receive an unnecessary amount of punishment in his last fight against Miguel Cotto, there is reason for this.

Cotto is a future Hall Of Famer and was much more accustomed to the Junior Middleweight Weight Limit they fought at.

Guerrero meets Mayweather at Welterweight, where Floyd has done his best work and seems most comfortable. Guerrero has also bounced around the weight divisions, fighting as a lightweight as recently as September 2011.

A fighter with a heavy punch and clear knockout power at the lighter weights, that power seems to have been negated through his rise up the weight classes, with Guerrero not possessing a knockout in his last five fights or at all at Welterweight.

Being a Southpaw, Guerrero will come at Mayweather with angles he is not all too familiar having only fought a handful of lefties in his career, but if Mayweather uses his hand speed and silky skills and fights at a distance, I see no reason it won’t be another victory for Floyd.

Boxing needs a Mayweather victory. More than ever the sport needs a marquee name on everyone’s lips. A quarter million people will be in town for this fight and it will generate over $100 million dollars in revenue to the City of Las Vegas, and they are all to see one man.

Mayweather will earn $32 million dollars just for lacing up the gloves, and even more money when his slice of the Pay Per View revenue is calculated. Guerrero will earn $3 million, a career high.

With this fight being fight one of a four fight deal, potential opponents are being sought as marquee names continue to drift of the boxing map.

Pacquaio, Cotto, Mosley, Hatton, Margarito, etc are no longer as marketable and the likes of Alvarez, Trout and Bradley don’t yet feel ready to take over Mayweather’s mantle.

A potential fight with Pacquaio has been hurt given the Pilipino fighter losing his last two fights (should have been three), and although the fight would still do good business, it would pale in comparison to what it might have been.

Looking at it from a Risk vs Reward scheme of things, if Mayweather was tentative to take the fight previously when figures of $100 million were offered, both fighters would stand to earn far less if the fight was made now.

Boxing seems to be building to an eventual Floyd Mayweather v Saul Alvarez super fight, but with Alvarez still only 22 and is still yet to have a real “Marquee” name on his kill list, despite looking impressive recently against Austin Trout. Golden Boy Promotions and Boxing may not want to burn their future star before he is ready.

If anything I see a Mayweather v Alvarez fight as the final fight of the four fight deal, but questions remain as to who Mayweather will step in the ring with if he defeats Guerrero.

Tim Bradley, Austin Trout, Juan Manuel Marquez, Amir Khan all should keep the money rolling in and remain credible opponents, but can any really trump Mayweather.

Robert Guerrero stands in the perfect position to send all future plans down the drain with an upset win on Sunday, and stop the search for Boxing’s next superstar, but in a city where the house always wins, sometimes you’re on a hiding to nothing.

Prediction – Mayweather by decision.

You could be right but I thinking Mayweather will take on Canelo at the end of his contract after he's made as much money as he possibly can. No sense taking on Canelo early on to risk a loss then the rest of his contract doesn't look as appealing. I personally think Mayweather is on his way down. Father time is starting to take a grip on him. Not bagging him, thats just life. BUT even with that he's still the best IMO. Thing for me is Canelo is on his way up and right now I think he has a legitimate chance albeit a slim one against Mayweather so IF they fight maybe 18 months down the track Canelo may be in his prime against an aging living legend. Who knows if Mayweather would even make that fight, becasue its obvious Mayweather's 'Zero' is more important to him than the 'business' at the moment. Mayweather always takes the Lions share of the purse so he can't claim that the 'business' stopped the fight from happening. Time will tell which way the 'Money' goes..

Pacquiao had to face Marquez again as he never 'beat' Marquez. Marquez was robbed by the scorer's in fight 2&3. Pacquiao won't fight in the USA anymore. Seeing as Marquez has already been robbed twice, why should he go fight Pacquiao in Asia? Bradley beat Marquez? Dream on Bradley got the hell beaten out of his by a light welterweight in his last outing and was lucky to be given the decision. Marquez will KO Bradley.

Frankie your a clown! I was at PAC v JMM 4 and every person there including every Mexican said that he was getting dominated. You r obviously a JMM fan so won't bother going through the fights One question, PAC gave JMM 3 chances after the first fight. Why does he not give PAC the same chance to right a wrong??? He says he has nothing to prove but one punch proves nothing. As I said, Bradley will school him, PAC will take the title and JMM can come begging to PAC for a payday again. Only this time he won't get one -- Comment from The Roar's iPhone app.

Interestingly in the post fight press conference, Mayweather says he chose Guerrero as he knew The Ghost doesn't throw as hard as Cotto. So if that's true the remaining 5 fights won't be against Canelo or anyone who throws bombs.

You're an idiot. Juan Manual Marquez won the second and third fights with Pacquiao. Dodgy scoring cost Marquez twice. Marquez was getting a beating in the 4th fight? After 6 rounds it was a 1 point lead for Pacquiao. Marquez all ways puts it on Pacquiao. For real boxing fans Marquez leads the series 4-0 or at a push 3-0-1. Pacquiao has never legitimately best Marquez

Canelo beats Mayweather. Canelo has size and reach advantage. Mayweather lacks the power to push the Cinnamon Kid back.

The Showtime deal is six fights in 30 months not four and should make Floyd somewhere around $250 million. -- Comment from The Roar's iPhone app.

Oh and the comment about PAC should have lost his last 3? Marquez was getting is arse handed to him in sep until Marquez threw a Haymaker that not even he saw land! If you think Bradley beat PAC then you should not be allowed to write a boxing column! PAC v JMM 3 I will give u was close but did JMM do enough to take the belt??? The fact that PAC gave JMM 3 chances and now won't give PAC the chance to even the score shows all u need to know! Bradley will school JMM, PAC will take the title from Bradley and then JMM can beg Manny again!!! -- Comment from The Roar's iPhone app.

Some really good prelim fights there. Love still has some work to do but Mares was very impressive. Good stoppage for mine. FMJ was just too classy. Have never been a fan but he was just way too good. Right hand lead was just amazing to watch. Would love to see him v Canelo bit won't happen anytime soon. Maybe Trout v FMJ??? Obviously PAC v FMJ is not going to happen! Can't see anyone decent until the last 2 fights on the contract -- Comment from The Roar's iPhone app.

Who's next for Mayweather? Dont think they will burn Saul Alvarez on him just yet. As I said in my preview above, I think Alvarez will be one of the final fights in his Showtime contract. Perhaps we will see someone like Bradley, Marquez, Khan but can't see anyone stopping Mayweather. Marquez and Bradley have signed to fight soon and that should be a cracking fight, and I'd love to see Floyd fight the winner.

Into the final round and Floyd is on his bike just fighting smart and staying out of danger. Now Floyd comes forward and scores a good right hand. Credit Guerrero though he has not stopped coming forward and trying to find something to get him back into this fight. Mayweather still dictating here in the final round as both men look tired and start to clinch more and more as the clock ticks down. Mayweather puts a combination together working his way out of the corner. Crowd surges wanting a knockout but they wont get one tonight, despite Mayweather throwing some big bombs late. MAYWEATHER 10-9

Into the Championship Rounds, and it's getting desperate for Guerrero. He ties up Mayweather in centre ring and Mayweather doesnt need to be there. Mayweather now back in the corner, which he seems to make a habit of when he's tired. Floyd just needs to keep the distance and he will coast to a points win. Guerrero is the busier though in this round and as I type Mayweather puts some lovely punches together, 4 and 5 punches landing at will. The first time really this fight he has planted his feet and thrown bombs. Mayweather really letting it go now like he is looking for a stoppage. There is no question who wins this one. All Mayweather in the final 1.30 of round 11. MAYWEATHER 10-9

Commentator doesnt agree with my assesment of the last round and he's only given Guerrero one round, but Guerrero remains busy and can pinch rounds if Floyd coasts. But even if he pinches the remaining rounds, it still wont be enough. He needs a knockout. Guerrero has picked up the pace searching for one, but it just doesnt seem like it is going to be his night. Mayweather scores well with the jab and just gets out of trouble so easy. Guerrero comes forward and throwing and Mayweather is just so calm and just rolls out of the way, even scoring punches. Not much to talk about this round but I'd give it to Floyd. MAYWEATHER 10-9

Guerrero is really starting to tire and Mayweather seems comfortable dictating the pace going into the 9th. Guerrero needs to start swinging for the fence, but Mayweather just needs to remain composed and not look for the finish, unless it's there. Mayweather is still able to keep the distance. Guerrero rushes forward and swings a huge uppercut that got a bit of Mayweather and Floyd momentarily is under a bit of pressure but Floyd dances away and is back on the jab. The fight starts to get a bit tighter here as the distance closes. Guerrero does some nice body work late in the round and makes it close and may have just pinched one off Floyd, as he was the busier and Floyd prepared to wait on the ropes. GUERRERO 10-9

Into the 8th round and Guerrero's left eye is starting to show some damage. Mayweather as always looks unmarked. Guerrero is still trying away but he cant seem to get anything through that troubles Floyd. Guerrero scores with a nice jab and comes on with a flurry. Mayweather changes level nicely though and then scores big with a right hand that has Guerrero on his heels a little. Mayweather comes forward and lands a few more punches just to put a stamp on the round. MAYWEATHER 10-9
