Giro d’Italia 2013, Stage 9: The Daily Roar

By Kate Smart / Expert

Tom and Jerry have surfaced at the Giro as the game of cat-and-mouse through the Italian countryside has finally begun.

Taking this comparison a step or ten too far was Pirazzi and Chalapud fighting for the second KOM. Chalapud seemed to have his cartoons a little mixed up as I’m sure I saw a bird coming from him.

No Robinson, Tweety is another cartoon and Pirazzi is no Sylvester because Sylvester never wins.

Perhaps wishing being scared of descending on a wet mountain was a figment of his imagination, was Bradley Wiggins, who admitted that during stage eight he, “descended like bit of a girl”.

Yesterday, the ‘Mod Man’ spent the day soaking wet and dreading the long, wet, slippery downhills of the Tuscan countryside. If he descended like a girl on Saturday, he spent yesterday riding down the wet medium mountains like my 91-year-old grandmother.

As Wiggins reminded us after the Individual Time Trial, there’s still a long way to go and Nibali may be unable to hold onto a 29 second lead over the likes of Evans.

Yes, Sir Wiggo, you are absolutely right about that, but unless you grow a set similar to Nibali’s, and Evans’ for that matter, when going down a slippery mountain, I don’t think Nibali has much to worry about from you.

And what does frantically trying to get back in touch with the Maglia Rosa do to your legs? Has them screaming for tomorrows much desired rest day is what it does to your legs.

On a dark and dreary day, the rain draped itself over the Tuscan countryside, enveloping the riders in the mist. The helicopter panned high above the low lying clouds, creating an atmospheric image of the sort you could expect from a 1970s concept album.

The weather conditions were truly awful.

Wet, cold and dark.

Who could blame the Maglia Rosa for not wanting to be seen?

The Maglia Rosa proved her shyness in the inclement weather, requiring protection from her Italian wearer.

Barely visible all day, hiding under the black raincoat of Nibali, she is demure and shy and refused to come out and light up the darkness of the day.

Nibali is granted another day to try and convince the pink enigma that he is the man to stick by for the next two weeks.

Speaking of not wanting to be seen, Hesjedal decided to eject himself from the rear of the peloton with about 12 kilometres to go.

As a couple of riders yesterday didn’t get the memo that they were at a bicycle race and punctuality is paramount, Hesjedal thought he was at a one day classic earlier in the week and is now somewhat surprised that he still has two weeks of racing to go.

Was Maxim Belkov’s solo breakaway an attempt to win the race, or was he really using the stage as some sort of early practice for this year’s World Championships?

Either way, his efforts were well-rewarded.

Breakaways in cycling are the ultimate affirmation of the underdog and there is nothing better than seeing one succeed.

Tomorrow’s rest day will leave the riders, well their legs at least, in no doubt as to the existence of God, with their prayers of a day off answered.

Here are some thoughts on just how riders may be spending tomorrow.

Vincenzo Nibali will be coaxing the Maglia Rosa out of her prickly shell and using every ounce of flattery he can muster to convince her to stay with him.

Cadel Evans will be celebrating his return from the dead.

That Canadian Guy will undoubtedly spend it considering the fine line between playing it low key and being MIA.

Bradley Wiggins will be preparing some girls clothing to match his own description of his descending abilities in this year’s Giro.

I’m never really sure who needs the rest more: the riders or us long suffering viewers on the other side of the world?

Monday is a well deserved rest day.

We haven't really seen Wiggins' apparent new-found climbing abilities in the Giro as of yet because we haven't got to the proper mountains yet. However, when he has gone up he's looked comfortable, it''s just on the wet descents that he's struggled. In fact, for once he's probably looking forward to summit finishes. And to be fair, he looked good in Catalunya and the Trentino, but he will probably need to take time off Nibali in the mountains and I can't see that happening personally.

I think if Wiggo wants to lead Sky at the Tour, he'll need to at least keep up with Froome in the mountains. He couldn't do that last year and he hasn't shown obvious signs of having improved this year.

Froome could have a real challenge on his hands as Wiggins big goal was the Giro given the big amount of TT kms. His chance of winning has slipped severely so perhaps he is thinking 'I can win the Tour' His big opportunity (as is his game plan) is to put time in on the TT and defend that in the mountains. He is going to have to attack in the mountains and some of the higher mt climbs might be a bit of a stretch for him. Very impressed with Cadel. He is showing what a classy rider he is. Very savy and appears to know the course and terrain very well.

So Lee, when the Giro finishes, how would Evans prepare for July? With Cadel including the Giro as a late addition to his program, would he wait and see how he fares in Italy and perhaps readjust the program again in preparation for TdF?

Yay, sittingbison, have been wondering where you've got to. Agree about Froome, indeed. I bet he's loving this. I do wonder how Cadel will recover for the Tour as well. I wonder if he was expecting to go this well, how much he's been foxing with us etc. Good to hear from you.

I'd say Tejay is feeling the pressure about now! Will be really interesting to see how the Giro guys go in the Tour. The Giro parcours is supposedly easier than previous events.

Wonder how Tejay is taking all this in over in Cali? If he rides well there and Cadel keeps this form into July then BMC could, surprisingly, be right up there for top honors in France. Contador and Froome must be licking their lips though at the prospect, as this is shaping up to be one very hard Giro and is going to leave a few guys more tired than usual. Racing in the rain for several days does really take it out of you, and we aren't even in the real mountains yet...

The real winner of this is Froome Dawg as Sir Wiggo looks shot and Cadel is close enough to Nibs to give it a real crack in the mountains...potentially exhausting them both for the Tour which could leave only Bertie as the only serious contender.

Oh, I can just see the King of all things Mod curled up as you described Zeb. Evans has been fantastic. I am curious though in terms of what this all means for July. Is he perhaps not really after another Yellow jersey but would like to add Pink to the collection instead???

I think Wiggo may not leave the hotel during the rest day. Perhaps a nice hot coco by the fire in some Rapha slippers. Good to see Evans back in the red jersey, I wouldn't be suprised if he manged to win the classification again just as he did in 2010.

Yeah delbeato, I thought it was quite funny too. It happened early in Eurosport's coverage, so it was one of the first things I saw. Very naughty indeed. Thanks for including the Pat Shaw tweet.

I had a good laugh at the Chalapud/Pirazzi duel. Pirazzi cut him off in the first KOM sprint, then Chalapud attacked him before the 2nd when Pirazzi was back at the team car. Apparently brought back some memories for Pat Shaw on Twitter. @shawry_07 #giro some things never change Pirazzi still filthy as ever! Was filthy in the amateurs and filthy still! #badsport
