Let me tell you why people don't like Manly

By Joshua Wells / Roar Rookie

In the NRL, there has been no team hated more than the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Rugby League club and that includes the salary cap cheating Melbourne Storm.

Media outlets love to knock the Eagles.

This article will provide six reasons as to why there a hate culture surrounding the boys from Brookie.

1. We are Manly and we can buy you
In the 1980s the Boys from Brookie had a massive bank account and they splashed their money around buying the best players they could find.

Most clubs struggled to keep up with the financial better offs, relying on community support and the classic raffles, but when the Sea Eagles raided the Magpies, they earned the nickname the Silvertails.

They also had bought up a storm in the 1970s when they raided the North Sydney Bears and took their best players.

2. Sorry, how do you count again?
Greg Hartley. Ask your father, grandfather, rugby league historian or any old player and they can tell you who this man is. This controversial referee was appointed to officiate the Manly-Parramatta Eels semi-final replay in 1978.

Hartley messed up his tackle counts seven times – with six of these tackle counts going the way of Manly. In the same match, Hartley sent off Ray Price and at the judiciary, Price wasn’t even suspended.

There were a lot of questions asked at the time and some remain suspicious to this day.

3. Putting the Bears down
Not only did they raid the Bears of some of their best players; they also managed to kill the club off.

Fans blamed the Eagles for the death of the club when the doomed two-year merger ended and not only did the competition lose a team, many fans lost their second favourite team.

4. David Gallop takes on Manly
Former NRL CEO David Gallop suspended star fullback Brett Stewart from the first few rounds of competition in 2009 after the New South Wales Origin representative faced a sexual assault charge.

He would eventually be acquitted but there was never reconciliation with Gallop or the Eagles. At the conclusion of the 2011 NRL grand final, Brett Stewart confronted David Gallop in a heated exchange on stage.

Constant complaining has continued throughout the years and fans are sick of it.

Many neutrals believe that the suspension was just and fair as at the time he was the face of the NRL and had put the game into disrepute with his drunken antics.

5. Mr. “I break my neck every game” Matai
The name Steve Matai is enough for some people to become instantly frustrated. Already in 2013 Matai has been suspended for a high shot on Rabbitohs prop George Burgess.

He has had more trips to the judiciary than most of his team mates combined.

Many forum goers, critics of Manly and general fans believe that every time Matai misses a tackle he goes down hurt, true or not, is enough to frustrate more people.

6. Richie Fa’aoso and grubby tactics
In the Round 7 clash between Manly and the Rabbitohs, Silvertail enforcer Richie Fa’aso dropped Greg Inglis and on his head not once, but twice.

People believe that this was in fact a tactic employed by coach Toovey to put Inglis off his game. He received rough treatment all night.

Brett Stewart also hung his elbow out clipping Andrew Evringham in the jaw and Steve Matai causing a brawl after high shotting Geogre Burgess.

This game was fiery and news outlets wrote for days about the thuggery shown on the field by the boys from Brookie.

Richie would receive an 8-week suspension, Matai would take one week off and Brett Stewart would unjustly miss no games through charge loading.

And to cap off all of this, no one was sent off. Was Hartley back you reckon?

Thank you for supporting my posted comments about THE BEACHES area not being the wealthy silvertails that Roy masters depicts it to be. The irony and hypocrisy of the fallacy should refute all the ridiculous attacks on Manly. All the attacks on Manly are coming from people with inferiority complexes. It's all a distraction from the truth. Everything about The Manly Warringah Sea Eagles is better and superior than the other clubs, we know it and so do you.

Most, if not all the anti-Manly comments are apocryphal- "doubtful authenticity, although widely circulated as being true" .Read this rubbish Clinno said | May 24th 2013 @ 12:43pm | ! The place – Full of false egomaniacs strutting in thier rediculously overpriced boardies. Aint nothin manly about Manly. Everything you say in the above, is a load of rubbish. Great spelling and typos mate. Matai was GREAT and MANLY is GREAT, always will be.

Bazzio makes sweeping generalisations on 23rd May 2013. I know a lot of rational people who like Manly, they understand that it is purely subjective for a person to hate a sports club for things that are out of their control. If the business of sport was run by Socialists then we wouldn't have clubs poaching or stealing players for large amounts of money, because money is the tool of Capitalism. Manly didn't create the system. If Les Boyd had stayed at Wests then people would've loved the little rascal. Manly made Boyd and Dorahy much better players, especially with all the healthy salt air.\ Tommy Raudonikis is a simpleton who thinks the Northern Beaches doesn't have factories or warehouses for the locals to work in, according to Tommy, only Westies do that type of work. What a joke. Recently an idiot asked me if I was a QLD supporter, pointing to my Sea Eagles cap. I politely told the Moron that it was a Manly cap and I bleed Blue for NSW. Thus, proving the level of argument and intelligence of Manly haters. It's a very low level.

Jealousy and envy is the reason people attack the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. It's a misnomer that everybody on The Northern Beaches is wealthy and comfortable, the money stops at Balgowlah and restarts at Newport, there's a large % of people who are working class or lower middle class in this area. There's a portion of Bogans there as well. People very conveniently ignore the fact that other clubs have bought a lot of Manly players over the decades as well, but they don't want the truth to get in the way of their fallacy. We don't whinge and complain, we just get on with being the great and proud club that we are. Look at the 1995 Grand Final against The Bulldogs and the glaring errors by the Refs that allowed 2 tries to the Dogs, knock ons at dummy 1/2 and the forward pass. The massive forward pass was in the 2013 Grand Final Look at the 2013 Grand Final and the 1/2 dozen decisions that went the way of The Roarters, oh, I mean The Roosters. If I need to list them all then you either didn't see the match or you don't understand the rules of the game. Even fair minded Roosters supporters admit that they were very lucky to get away with all the errors the refs made. People like to perpetuate the myths and lies about Manly. Aussies love to cut down the Tall Poppies. I'm an aetheist, though it is the real God's country and people are jealous that where they live isn't as good, that's not our fault. I love the banner at the games " Guess what Manly hates you to " In fact we dislike you far more and with legitimate reasons.

We play completely fair, we take the wins like we should, none of this is because of the actually team, its other peoples doing against us. No one should care what people think about Manly, we're one of the best teams there is!

Mate, you need true, none of these reasons are wrong, buying players was completely the other players choice. Yes, Greg messed up a lot that day, but how does anyone know he was just having a bad day, he could have done it to any team and the same thing would have happened. Steve Matai, it can be used as a tactic in sport, yes it wasn't a smart, and this is just one player your talking about. in fact all these reasons are result of Manly's managers or bad refs, it has nothing to do with the actual team. And grubby tactics, why do you think there called tactics? its a way of playing that worked for him, other teams needed to adapt to it. And Manly is not the most hated team, Melbourne Storm for example are playing in the same way and they don't get any hate, even though they have two of the most dirty players I can think, Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk.

JJ the point about Manly buying up player is that they bought them off direct competitors in some cases strategically to make those clubs weaker (tactically smart but very unsportsmanlike behaviour in an era where that was not done). The difference is that St George in the era you speak of 1956 - 66 did not, in fact in that era St George purchased a total of 11 players from other clubs in the same competition (interestingly enough in the same period Manly purchased 24). The clear difference between the 2 is that St George were able to attract player and build juniors they never used their wealth to directly weaken other clubs which is what according to the author (and it appears in some very difficult to refute) Manly are guilty of. As far as your comment about moronic Westy goes, Roy Masters is one of the greatest contributors to the game of Rugby League of all time he mentored some great players to achieve their full potential like Les Boyd, John Dorahy and John "Dallas" Donnelly, (when reviewing this list it might appear that the author could have a point about Manly's unsportsmanlike conduct in it's acquisition of players). Roy Masters achieved great things for the game JJ giving clubs down on their luck a chance when if it were not for his motivational methods they may not have had one. Lastly JJ your comment about the dump out West, are you aware that the average house price in Ashfield (the home of Wests for the majority of their tenure) is $833K whilst the average house price in your "beautiful area by the beaches" Brookvale (the home of the Manly Sea Eagles) is at $821K. It appears that you are mistaken in your assesment of the Ashfield area and that perhaps the dump of which you speak is more valuable than the beaches and more people wish to live there than the beach. This simply points out JJ that you need to clarify a few things for me in your statements, loose some of the personal attacks and back up what you are saying with some facts i.e add to the discussion don't bring it down please.

Well if those are the reasons it doesn't make any sense. How do you think the Dragons won all of those premierships in a row? They bought up all the best players with revenue raised from pokies. Plenty of other clubs have done the same when they were cashed up so why single out Manly? So a moronic westy calls them silvertails, what justification is that to hate a club? Let's not forget that Norths were going to be out of the comp completely if Manly didn't save them. I think the simple fact is that people are jealous of their success, the fact that they are located in a beautiful area by the beaches instead of some dump out west and they have the smartest and best looking supporters. That's no justification to me to hate Manly but then the haters are rather dim witted especially when it comes to the reasons why they supposedly hate Manly.

Heres some.more reasons to hate manly! 1. Manly has been the most dominant team in the last 5 years 2.Manly has won TWO grandfinals in 4 years 3.Manly is the ONLY team to win a premiership every decade 4.Manly have made the finals EVERY year for the last ten years 5.Manly is responsible for the biggest grandfinal victory ever in Nrl history beating a cheating storm team 6.If you don't follow Melbourne then Manly has a better win ratio over your team (that's any team except Melbourne) 7.Matai is one of the last hitmen out there he brings great entertainment and joy to all.fans and gives you women a chance to bicker when he owns your players (Burgess brothers in the same match matai weights 94kg lol) I suppose you want this gladitorial sport to be played by nances and powder puffs like Adam blair 8.keep hating manly we love watching you burn when our boys outclass your mob any mob 9.even with out the great des (who tarnished his legacy) manly are still the team to beat!

...and they've won two premierships in the past six seasons. As a fan I don't care how much people hate Manly, as long as we keep winning I'm happy. Have been the best and most consistent (legitimate) team over the past seven or eight years so who gives a #$@& what people think! I'll take the wins no matter how they come!

I know that in order to learn you have to ask questions. How much more does the quizmaster Jamie need to know and how many rules is he still unaware of, you'd think Manly could afford to buy him a rule book so we don't have to see him doing a very poor impersonation of Eddie McGuire, they're a good football side but their emblem should be a pin cushion.

The Don Arko was President of the Leagues Club, not the football club, during his time with the ARL. He never held simultaneous positions with the Sea Eagles and the ARL. Let's not forget John Quayle was head of the ARL too, but no-one suggests Parramatta got anything out of his tenure, nor did Balmain when Neil Whittaker had the job. Conspiracy theories abound.

I don't think anyone really has anything much against St George Illawarra and well we would all like to see another team in Brisbane but the Bronco's are not hated by their neighbours like Manly are despite the fact they are more successful than Manly. In reality the further people are from Manly it appears the less their hatred for this club e.g take a look at Bears forums when Manly loose they hate Manly. It would appear that over the years Manly have been very successful and to achieve this success they have often done whatever it takes to get there. This has put a lot of noses out of joint and meant that a lot of other fans rightfully hold a grudge against Manly forever and that is the passion of Rugby League.
