Collingwood vs Geelong: AFL live scores, blog

By Brodie / Roar Guru

Collingwood and Geelong both started the season with premiership expectations – square off in a battle of two teams headed in different directions after Round 7. Stay with us on this page for live scores and commentary from 7.40pm AEST for this epic battle.

The Pies were struck a devastating defeat last week at the hands of Fremantle where they capitulated yet again in the fourth quarter and lost with their heads in shame.

Geelong, meanwhile, defeated Essendon in an undefeated clash in which the Cats proved their skill and class.

From the surface this looks like a big high school bully up against the kid who has already taken a few hits to the face.

Sure, the Pies might be down but you can bet they still have some punches to throw.

The Pies welcome back perhaps their best inside midfielder with midfielder Luke Ball returning after a 13-month layoff with a torn ACL.

This is certainly welcoming news for the Pies who have lost Dale Thomas for two weeks and young gun, Alex Fasolo for the year.

Nathan Buckley has been under much scrutiny in the football world for not have this Collingwood team in tip-top shape.

What better of an opportunity than on the big Saturday night stage against the best side in the competition?

Speaking of the best side in the competition, have you heard a peep out of the Cattery all season?

They are absolutely purring along at 7-0 and with the likes of Travis Varcoe and Hamish McIntosh to come back you can pin them in for a top four finish.

Taylor Hunt and James Kelly will miss this week for the Cats but they won’t miss a peep with veterans Josh Hunt and Joel Corey returning.

This is a true battle of kick vs the handball as proven by the statistics. Collingwood, the number-two ranked side in the competition kicking the ball whilst averaging ten more marks then the Cats.

Geelong meanwhile, average first in the whole AFL when it comes to handballs. It’s a strategy they have always used and it hasn’t failed them yet.

Everywhere else the stats seem pretty even so it looks like it should be a great clash.

Last time these two teams met however it was the Pies, who prevailed by 31 points in round 16 last season. It would be a shock if they were to do that again.

I get the feeling the stars such as Joel Selwood, Dane Swan, Tom Hawkins, Travis Cloke and Pendles will have a lot to do with the result of this one.

I’m going to guess it goes down to the final five minutes and the Pies win by two.

Combine these two close games with the Brisbane game this morning and the Subiaco game last night, and add in Gold Coast notching up another established scalp and we've had quite the weekend so far.

Collingwood's tackling pressure reminded me of the way they played back in 2010. To come back and beat Geelong after they got that run on in the third quarter was fantastic. Great win! And that's not even mentioning the injuries and suspensions we had tonight.
